Perisher's peaks dusted with more than 10cm of snow ahead of ski season
The ski season has started early with Australia's largest resort covered in fresh snowfall overnight.
Less than two weeks ahead of its official opening, Perisher Ski Resort's seven peaks was covered by more than 10cm of snow as of 4pm on Tuesday.
'Overnight temps dropped to a fresh -3C and, combined with plenty of precipitation, Perisher is wearing some white this morning,' the resort said.
'We're stoked to have 10cm of fresh snow on the ground after a wild and windy 24 hours at Perisher.
'It's the perfect prelude to the season, and we're counting down the days until we're ripping in again.'
The first snow of the season arrived in early and mid-May.
Winter sport enthusiasts welcomed the woolly weather, hoping for more as Perisher's opening on June 7 – coinciding with the King's Birthday long weekend and three-day Peak Music Festival – gets closer.
'Please please please Mother Nature turn on the taps,' one wrote.
'Keep up the hard work ghosts of Perisher.'
'Keep it coming,' another said, while a third added: 'Love it'.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecast a very high chance of snow showers across the day, expected to ease into the evening.
A low of minus 4C is set to hit the slopes on Thursday.

Queensland braces for cold snap with below-average temperatures and frost
Queensland is set for a cold snap as temperatures are forecast to drop below average this week in a wintry blast. The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a sunny and cool day across most of the state today, with patchy morning frost in the central interior and Granite Belt. However, senior forecaster Harry Clark said the public should brace for a chilly week. "So, quite a cold blast to come for most of Queensland. The only area to really escape that will be the far north, so Cairns and the peninsula," he said. "For the rest of Queensland, it'll be a proper wintry week." Mr Clark said today temperatures could be as low as 11 degrees in Brisbane, 7 degrees through the southern interior in places like Stanthorpe and about 4 degrees in the central interior. "Up the east coast, probably still in the teens [temperature-wise] for most places in central and northern Queensland, but certainly as we get to Tuesday, when that cold air mass becomes properly established, it will become pretty chilly and cold," he said. The bureau has forecast frost this morning in isolated areas around the Carnarvon Ranges and potentially the Granite Belt. Mr Clark said frost was expected to become more widespread from tomorrow onwards, across the Darling Downs, Maranoa, Warrego, and into the central-west and Central Highlands. "We're expecting those cold temperatures to really hang around and persist through southern and central Queensland, even potentially sending a little further into northern and far-northern Queensland." Mr Clark said people in the south-east could expect to feel even colder because of westerly winds accompanying the chilly weather. "Although it will be sunny, it might feel a few degrees colder than the actual temperature suggests," he said.

Emergency services mount rescue operation after cars became stuck in heavy snow at Mount Hotham
More than a dozen people have been rescued from Victoria's Mount Hotham, after several cars became stuck about 10:30pm last night due to heavy snowfall. Victoria Police and SES members from Bright and Falls Creek are carrying out the rescue operation near Dargo High Plains Road. Thirteen people have been rescued so far, but the SES said it was believed about 20 people in total had been stuck, with the operation ongoing. Police said a man in his 40s was treated for minor injuries after his vehicle rolled."Emergency services spent today using snowmobiles to access those trapped on the mountain after more than 50 centimetres of snow fell in the area this weekend," a police spokesperson said. Snowgoers have been warned to obey road closure signs to allow emergency services to continue searching the area for any others who may be stranded. Dargo Highway Plains Road is closed to traffic due to the extreme weather conditions and is not expected to reopen until after the King's Birthday long weekend. Police have urged people to heed weather warnings, monitor conditions and ensure their vehicles are appropriately equipped for the conditions.

‘Absolutely dumping': More than 40cm of snow kickstarts NSW ski season
Ski resorts across the NSW Snowy Mountains have been blanketed by a whopping 45cm of snow, in a strong start to the official ski season. Perisher ski resort recorded 25cm of fresh snow falling overnight and continuing to fall, bringing the long-weekend total to 45cm. More snow was expected to fall on Sunday across the range, with a north-westerly wind and temperatures topping only -1C. The snowfall comes at a welcome time for the ski resorts after a difficult few years, with Perisher posting on social media that Saturday night was an 'absolutely dumping'. The Bureau of Meteorology was reporting snowfall in the Australian Alps on Sunday above 900m as a high in Western Australia brought strong winds to north NSW. Meanwhile, a cold front was sweeping across southern NSW, with several more fronts expected to follow before a high-pressure ridge settles over NSW next week. The early season dusting was quick to light up social media, with people commenting that it was an 'amazing weekend' and a 'great start' to the ski season. Thredbo ski resort was forecasting a high chance of snow on Monday, with Sunday's dusting having blanketed the ski fields nestled into Mt Kosciuszko. Across the border, Mt Hotham resort reported a whopping 51cm of snow so far a storm there, with 32cm falling in the past 24 hours. Snow was still lightly falling at the resort on Sunday morning, with the temperature dipping to a frigid -3C. The NSW snow season ended earlier for the second year in a row in 2024 after one of the warmest winters on record. The Bureau reported above average winter mean temperatures across the state, in particular in the south and parts of the east coast.
