on Saturday directed police commissioners to take strict action against people misusing the Right to Information (RTI) Act to harass industrialists, warning that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

"We have decided to ensure that no industrialist is troubled. Those indulging in strong-arm tactics should be booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA)," Pawar said during his visit to the city's industrial estate. Referring to similar action taken in Beed, he said police in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar must also act without yielding to political pressure.
His instructions came after the industrialists raised the issue of being targeted by some anti-social elements, who are misusing information obtained through RTI for either forcing the industries to give some work or bending to their extortion demands.
When contacted, police commissioner Pravin Pawar said the city police are already working to address these concerns, for which multiple rounds of meetings have been conducted with the representatives of the industries.
Addressing industrial concerns in the Marathwada region, Pawar assured that govt was committed to resolving issues such as the need for a dedicated police station, better road connectivity, fire brigade facilities, and revision of power tariffs.
"Govt's job is to solve the problems of industrialists. The chief minister and I are on the same page," he said.
He noted that cleanliness in the industrial estate was lacking and recommended that CSR (corporate social responsibility) funds be utilised to address this. Pawar also clarified that the power tariff burden on industries was partly due to concessions given to farmers, but added that daytime electricity supply for agriculture has now been arranged.

Later, Pawar inspected the ongoing construction work of the 'Sarthi' institute in the city. He was accompanied by NCP MLA Satish Chavan and the party's district president Kailash Patil, among others.
On a separate note, when asked about Shiv Sena politician Sanjay Shirsat's controversial remark questioning the relevance of the social justice department following fund diversion to the 'Ladki Bahin' scheme, Pawar only said: "The CM will look into it."

Environment activist Medha Patkar was detained along with over 20 others by the Rayagada administration shortly after she arrived in the Odisha district on Thursday to participate in a public meeting in protest against the proposed bauxite mining by Vedanta Limited. Officials barred her from reaching the place along with 24 others, including activist Prafulla Samantra and IRS officer Sunanda Jhodia, citing that her presence at the protest at Sunger Hatapada village, organised by anti-mining forum 'Maa Mati Mali Surakshya Mancha', could create a law-and-order situation. Rayagada district collector Parul Patawari's order, dated June 4, said there is a reasonable apprehension the movement and the presence of Patkar and other activists may lead to deterioration of law and order, disturb public peace and hinder smooth conduct of administrative affairs and development processes in the district. 'Therefore in exercise of the powers conferred under Sec 163(3) of Bharatiya Nagarik Surakhya Sanhita,2023, Collector hereby issues prohibiting order restricting the above named individuals from entering or remaining present in Rayagada district for a period of two months from the date of issue of this order & participating in or instigating any form of protest, Dharana or unlawful assemblies within the said area. Any violation of this order shall be liable for action as per the law,' the order stated. After she was detained at the Rayagada railway station by police, Patkar was swiftly sent to Berhampur from where she travelled to Bhubaneswar. 'When I got off the train, the police stopped me at the station. I sat there and they asked me to wait in the VIP lounge, but I refused. I was supposed to go to the house of the person who came to receive me and then attend the programme. But the police did not allow it and showed me an order from the Collector listing 20 to 25 names of people who were barred from entering Rayagada district. They accused me of coming here to 'instigate' people,' she said. The meeting at Sunger, where Patkar was scheduled to speak, was planned in protest against bauxite mining at hills that straddle Kalahandi and Rayagada districts. In March 2023, the Odisha government issued a 50-year mining lease for a proposed bauxite mining project in the Sijimali hills, with the mines extending over an area of 1,549 hectares. After facing setbacks in its plans to mine at the Niyamgiri hills, Vedanta's interest shifted to the Sijimali. The mines have an estimated bauxite reserve of 311 million tonnes. The Sijimali mining project is likely to displace 100 families from 18 villages in the two districts, activists claim. Vedanta has applied for the mandatory Environment Clearance under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and Forest Clearance under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. In October 2023, two public hearings in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts for environmental clearance ended amid much protests. Protesting the detention of Patkar, former state Congress chief Niranjan Patnaik called it unfortunate. 'It is an assault on the very spirit of democracy. People who believe in democratic values should reflect seriously on this. Who are the architects behind this decision? In whose interest such a decision has been taken,' Patnaik asked.

Amid the ongoing speculations over a possible tie-up between Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray-led MNS, an internal survey ahead of the upcoming Mumbai civic body elections suggested that the alliance between the Thackeray cousins is unlikely to affect the BJP's poll prospects. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun preparations for the polls to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. In addition to this, the party is also preparing for other major civic body polls, including Pune and Thane, which are likely to be held later this year. Cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation with statements indicating they could ignore 'trivial issues" and join hands nearly two decades after a bitter parting of ways. While the MNS chief has said uniting in the interests of Marathi manoos (Marathi speaking people) is not difficult, Uddhav Thackeray said he was ready to put aside trivial fights, provided those working against Maharashtra's interests were not entertained. Notably, the MNS in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections supported BJP in Maharashtra, but six months later, both parties fought the state Assembly polls separately. 'In view of the political developments from the Thackeray cousins, the BJP undertook a detailed survey to evaluate the potential impact of a Uddhav-Raj alliance on Mumbai's electoral landscape," the BJP functionary was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. Raj Thackeray's influence, meanwhile, is seen as limited, he said. The BJP stands to gain if it contests 150 seats (out of total 227) in the BMC elections, the functionary said. ‘Alliances are not formed through media sound bites': MNS leader Amit Thackeray on the possibility of an alliance with Shiv Sena (UBT)
Amid mounting speculation over a possible alliance between the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, MNS leader and Raj Thackeray's son Amit Thackeray Thursday took a veiled dig at Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and other leaders who have been making statements hinting at a rapprochement. 'Alliances aren't formed through media sound bites or newspaper headlines. Direct dialogue is necessary,' Amit Thackeray said, speaking to reporters in Mumbai. Referring to the frequent commentary from Sena (UBT) leaders, he said, 'Every morning, someone gets up and says something about the alliance. But who are they trying to fool? If there is to be an alliance, the two brothers, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray, need to talk. They have each other's phone numbers.' Talking about attempts for the formation of an alliance in recent years, Amit Thackeray claimed that during the Covid-19 pandemic, it was Raj Thackeray who had taken the first step by calling Uddhav Thackeray, the then chief minister of Maharashtra. 'This time, there's just talk in the media, but no real effort,' he added. When asked whether he personally supports the alliance, Amit Thackeray replied, 'Whatever Raj Thackeray wants is what I want.' The remarks came days after Raut stated that Raj Thackeray had expressed willingness to join hands, and that Uddhav Thackeray had 'responded positively'. However, MNS circles seemed unconvinced. One party functionary likened Shiv Sena (UBT)'s position to admiring mountains from afar – 'distant and decorative, but without substance'. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray, son of Uddhav Thackeray, had also earlier signalled willingness for forming an alliance, saying, 'We've already expressed our intent. Anyone who wishes to work for the welfare of the Marathi people and Maharashtra is welcome.' Citing a recent joint protest involving Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Deepesh Mhatre and MNS's Raju Patil, Aaditya Thackeray said such examples show the shared ground between the two parties. 'We know what is in the minds of the people, and our minds are clear. Whichever leader is ready to come with us for the benefit of Maharashtra, whichever party is coming forward, we will fight together with them,' Aditya Thackeray clarified. While leaders from both sides continue to make suggestive remarks, political observers said that the absence of a direct meeting between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray is the biggest stumbling block for the alliance. A senior political analyst said, 'For all the noise, unless the cousins meet face-to-face, the idea of a Sena-MNS alliance will remain just that – an idea.' In 2005, Raj Thackeray quit the undivided Shiv Sena, a party founded by his uncle Bal Thackeray, after reportedly feeling sidelined. Thereafter, he launched the MNS in March 2006.
