Gujarat CM attends last rites of Pahalgam terror attack victims
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday attended the last rites of a man and son duo who were killed in the terrorist attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam.
The mortal remains of the father and son duo from Bhavnagar were brought back to their hometown late Wednesday night.
The deceased, Yatish Parmar and his son Smit Parmar, were part of a 20-member group from Bhavnagar who had travelled to Kashmir to attend a religious discourse by Morari Bapu.
The group had gone for sightseeing in Pahalgam when the attack occurred on April 22.
Smit's mother, Kajal Parmar, broke down in heart-wrenching grief upon seeing the bodies of her husband and son. Their remains were first flown from Kashmir to Mumbai, then to Ahmedabad, and finally brought to Bhavnagar late at night.
Chief Minister Patel, Union Minister of State Nimuben Bambhaniya, Bhavnagar MLA Jitubhai Vaghani, Mayor Bharatbhai Barad, Municipal Chairman Rajubhai Rabadiya, District Collector Dr. Manish Bansal, and several local corporators and officials were present during the last rites of the man-son duo.
The terror attack in Pahalgam left one more Bhavnagar resident injured - Vinubhai Dabhi - who sustained a bullet wound in his right arm and is currently undergoing treatment in Kashmir.
The bullet reportedly grazed through his arm without causing major structural damage.
Chief Minister Patel has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured tourist from the state.
Meanwhile, spiritual leader and Ram Katha exponent Morari Bapu has temporarily suspended his ongoing Ram Katha sessions in Srinagar due to the prevailing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The announcement was made via an official post by the Shree Chitrakutdham Trust on X, stating: "Ram Katha 955, being held in Srinagar, has been postponed after the 5th day until further notice due to the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir. All those who attended the Katha are safe and well. The decision to postpone has been made purely in the interest of everyone's safety and well-being. The remaining four days of the Katha will resume when conditions permit."

Centre okays Rs 2,006 crore fund to help Himachal recover from floods, landslides
New Delhi: A high-level committee headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved Rs 2006.40 crore as Central assistance to Himachal Pradesh, for the recovery and reconstruction plan in the aftermath of flood, landslides and cloudburst incidents of 2023. The committee, comprising the Finance Minister, Agriculture Minister and Vice Chairman NITI Aayog as members, considered the proposal for financial assistance to the state from the recovery and reconstruction funding window under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). The financial assistance from the Centre will help the state in carrying out recovery and reconstruction activities, required due to the damage and destruction that occurred during the 2023 monsoon. Out of the Rs 2,006.40 crore that has been approved, Rs 1,504.80 crore will be the central share from the Recovery and Reconstruction Funding Window under the National Disaster Response Fund. Earlier, on December 12, 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs had approved additional financial assistance of Rs 633.73 crore from the NDRF for Himachal Pradesh, which was affected by this disaster, according to the official statement. The Central government had approved recovery plans for the states of Uttarakhand to the tune of Rs 1,658.17 crore, in the aftermath of the Joshimath subsistence and another Rs 555.27 crore for Sikkim, in the aftermath of the GLOF incident of 2023. The Central government had also approved a number of mitigation projects with overall financial outlay of Rs 7,253.51 crore, for mitigating the risks of a number of hazards in the areas of urban floods (Rs 3,075.65 crore), landslides (Rs 1,000 crore), GLOF (Rs 150 crore), forest fire (Rs 818.92 crore), lightening (Rs 186.78 crore) and drought (Rs 2,022.16 crore). This additional assistance is over and above the funds released by the Centre to the states in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), already placed at the disposal of the states. During the financial year 2024-25, the Central government has released Rs 20,264.40 crore to 28 states under SDRF and Rs 5,160.76 crore under NDRF to 19 states. Additionally, Rs 4,984.25 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) to 19 states and Rs 719.72 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) to states have also been released, the statement said. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India is standing shoulder to shoulder with the state governments during natural calamities and disasters. To fulfil Prime Minister Modi's vision of a disaster-resilient India, the Ministry of Home Affairs, under the guidance of Home Minister Amit Shah, has taken several initiatives to ensure effective management of disasters in the country. Power theft case: Sambhal MP deposits Rs 6 lakh
Sambhal: Samajwadi Party's Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal, Ziaur Rahman Barq, has deposited Rs 6 lakh with the electricity department following an Allahabad High Court order in an electricity theft case registered against him, officials here said on Tuesday. They also confirmed that the electricity supply to his residence will be restored later in the day. The case dates back to December 2023, when the electricity department installed a smart meter at the MP's residence on December 17. A load inspection was conducted on December 19, during which the department accused the MP of power theft. Subsequently, a penalty of Rs 1.91 crore was imposed on him. Despite being given multiple opportunities by the department to present his case, the MP challenged the penalty in court. On June 3, the Allahabad High Court directed that electricity supply be restored upon the MP depositing Rs 6 lakh with the department. Complying with the directive, the MP's counsel, Farid Ahmed, visited the local electricity office on Monday and submitted a demand draft for Rs 6 lakh. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Ahmed said, 'As per the High Court's instructions, we have deposited Rs 6 lakh with the electricity department today. We have also submitted a formal request to restore the power connection. The matter is now listed for further hearing in the High Court on July 2.' Naveen Gautam, Executive Engineer, Electricity Department, Sambhal, said, 'A power theft inspection was conducted at the MP's premises in December. He had filed a petition in court, and on June 3, the court ordered that electricity be restored upon depositing Rs 6 lakh. In line with that directive, the draft has been submitted. The MP's electricity connection will be reinstated today.' The case remains under judicial consideration, with the next hearing scheduled in the High Court on July 2.

ED raids in Delhi classroom construction 'scam'
The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday raided multiple premises in the national capital as part of a money laundering probe into the classrooms construction 'scam' that is alleged to have taken place during the previous AAP government, official sources said. The federal probe agency undertook the searches after registering a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act ( PMLA ) taking cognisance of a Delhi Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) FIR. At least 37 premises of contractors and private entities are being covered by the ED officials, the sources said.
