Hale, 58, an honorary degree recipient at the university, offered $1,000 to each graduate in the class of 2025 at the school's commencement ceremony on May 16, per Boston.com.
'I have one more thing to share," Hale said after his commencement address.
Guards then emerged from a nearby security-flanked black SUV with duffel bags of cash. Each bag was packed with individual envelopes containing $500 in cash, the outlet reports.
Hale explained that each graduate would receive two envelopes. 'One is for you,' Hale told the more than 1,400 graduating seniors in a video of the graduation. 'The other is for someone in need.'
This is the billionaire's second time offering this financial gift to graduating college students. In 2024, he awarded the same funds to graduates of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
The founder and CEO of Granite Telecommunications added that his philanthropic efforts have been a highlight of his career thus far.
'The turmoil in our country has increased the need for caring, sharing, and compassion,' he said during the speech on May 16. 'Our community needs your help, your leadership, and your empathy more than ever.'
Students from the Hancock and Angelo Elementary Schools in Brockton, Mass., decorated the envelopes inside the duffel bags.
"One of the greatest joys in life has been the joy of giving,' Hale said. 'We want to share that experience with you.'

Holding cash in case a bear market hits? Here's where and when to invest if stocks plunge.

Deploying cash during a bear market can be difficult as fear sets in. It's smart to have a plan — don't enter the market all at once, and don't panic. Experts suggest buying quality dividend stocks and large-cap tech if a bear market comes around. If you've been building up a big cash reserve over the last few years, you're not alone. You're also probably not alone in wishing you'd had the money in stocks. Cash has generated meaningful yields since 2022 after the Federal Reserve went on a rate-hike spree, drawing record amounts into money market funds. The total value in money market funds — highly liquid, cash-equivalent assets that generate yield from short-term bonds — is at a record $7.3 trillion. About $2.1 trillion is held by retail investors. Even stock-investing icon Warren Buffett holds a record cash position worth nearly $350 billion as of March. But stocks have ripped higher in the meantime. The S&P 500 is up 80% since its October 2022 low. It's been difficult to know when to get into the market, though. With the stock market consistently hitting new highs and valuations historically elevated in recent years, you might have been waiting for a good opportunity to put that cash to work in equities, waiting for a dip to buy. If you missed the April plunge, you might still be doing so. It's not necessarily a bad approach. Goldman Sachs said this week that the chance of a stock-market pullback has jumped. In fact, stocks are so expensive that Vanguard said this mont that its ideal portfolio over the next 10 years is a very conservative allocation of 70% bonds and 30% stocks. The cheaper the entry point, the better the returns. But timing the market is tricky and something market pros usually advise against trying. No one knows how long a bull rally can go or how long an eventual pullback will last. That's why the best course of action is probably to dollar-cost-average, continuing to put money into the market at set intervals, whether the market is up or down. However, if you are resolved to waiting for a significant decline to enter the market, it's a good idea to have a plan set in place before that moment arrives. When and what to buy Though bear markets in recent years have been short-lived, the average bear market going back to 1932 has seen a 35.1% drawdown that lasts a year and a half, according to investment bank Stifel. So take it slow, says brokerage firm Charles Schwab. "Instead of going all in at once, one might consider buying small chunks at a time," Charles Schwab said in an August 6 post. But not too slow, said Hank Smith, the director and head of investment strategy at Haverford Trust. There's no way to tell when the bottom is in, so you want to start taking advantage of the pullback once it hits 10% correction territory, he said. It may hurt if the market ends up falling further than 10%, Smith said, but being indecisive about when to get in can result in missed opportunities. Remember the 19.9% decline in the S&P 500 from February to April? The pain was over in the blink of an eye, with the index back at all-time highs before the end of June — and the rally has been furious, with the market up 30% since April lows. So if the market does continue to drop, it's time to get even more aggressive, Smith said. "Let's say that correction morphs into a bear market of 20%, and now you're kicking yourself that you put any in at down 10%. You can't do that," Smith told Business Insider. "You have to say, 'Ok, this is another opportunity to tranche in again,' and probably with more than you did at down 10%." As for areas of the market to buy, it's difficult to know which sectors and themes will get beaten up the most. But Schwab said it's good to take a diversified approach and start buying all corners of the market. "Interestingly enough, traders can diversify their portfolios with as few as 12 stocks, targeting stocks in all major sectors," the firm said. "Although diversification doesn't eliminate the risk of experiencing investment losses, it can help increase the chances of capturing better-performing assets and avoid the risk of losing overall portfolio value to any single business, industry, or sector." Quality dividend stocks can also provide a good buffer to market losses, Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank said in a 2024 report. Smith said that economically sensitive sectors usually make for some of the best opportunities coming out of a recessionary bear market, as they dip during downturns and rebound when the economy recovers. Funds like the Fidelity MSCI Consumer Discretionary Index ETF (FDIS) and the Invesco Dorsey Wright Consumer Cyclicals Momentum ETF (PEZ) offer exposure to cyclical stocks. But he also said large-cap tech stocks are likely to drop the most because of how high their valuations are. If that's the case, it will likely be a good chance to add exposure to them, he said. "That's very common in high-growth stocks to have big sell-offs in what is a longer-term bull trend," Smith said. "That is where an investor with a lot of cash waiting for a significant decline in the market should look to." What Falling Mortgage Rates Mean for American Homebuyers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Mortgage rates are falling despite the Federal Reserve's reluctance to introduce new cuts over the past eight months, giving American homebuyers more purchasing power at a time when the market is slowly shifting in their favor. Last week, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage—the most popular home loan in the nation—dropped to its lowest level since April. As of August 7, according to Freddie Mac, it was at 6.63 percent, down from 6.72 percent a week earlier but still up 0.16 percentage points from a year earlier. While mortgage rates remain historically high, especially compared to the pandemic lows of below 3 percent, for homebuyers waiting on the sidelines for a good time to enter the market, any movement away from the 7 percent mark is a positive shift. Why Have Mortgage Rates Made a Dip? "Although the Fed has not yet cut its policy rate, mortgage rates and other long-term rates move in anticipation of what's ahead for the economy and the likely policy environment," chief economist Danielle Hale told Newsweek. In this case, the July jobs report has likely determined the recent dip in mortgage rates. The report showed that U.S. employers added 73,000 jobs last month, fewer than the 109,000 forecasters had expected, and unemployment rose from 4.1 percent in June to 4.2 percent. Hiring figures for May and June were also revised down, with a combined total of 258,000 fewer jobs over the past three months than previously estimated. In an aerial view, homes are seen under construction at a new housing development on August 08, 2025, in Henderson, Nevada."The fact that the July employment report showed weaker job growth, downward revisions to prior job growth estimates, and an uptick in the unemployment rate has reset expectations among investors," Hale said. "The Fed is now widely expected to cut its policy rate at its meeting in mid-September. This combined with a softer economic outlook has helped nudge longer-term interest rates, including mortgage rates, lower." The weaker-than-expected jobs report has also caused Treasury yields to tumble last week, as concerns over the future of the U.S. economy were revamped among investors, who are now betting that the central bank will cut interest rates next month. "Mortgage rates react to the bond market," Melissa Cohn, regional vice president of William Raveis Mortgage, told Newsweek. "Bonds react to current economic data, and the latest data has been weaker than expected, especially as it relates to the employment sector. All the weaker data and mild inflation reports that the Fed will react to in September are moving bond yields and mortgage rates today." What Does This Mean for the US Housing Market? There is no doubt among experts that lower mortgage rates are good news for American homebuyers. "Mortgage rates have dropped by .25 to .375 percent over the past 10 days. This means more affordability in the home that they are looking to purchase," Cohn said. But experts are also skeptical of the significance of this improvement. "This drop now makes homebuying more affordable of course, but it's too soon to tell if the improvements have an impact," Phil Crescenzo Jr., vice president of Southeast Division at Nation One Mortgage Corporation, told Newsweek. "We saw fairly consistent mortgage rates in late spring and summer, so it didn't take a huge move to be better than recent trends," Hale said. "It's also fair to describe today's mortgage rates as still relatively high." "Put simply, this is a good break for current home shoppers who are already in the market, and it may be enough of a break to spur others to restart their home searches, especially as we approach a seasonably more favorable time of year for buyers," Hale said. "Real improvement in home affordability will need rates to drop even further. For borrowers' sake, let's hope that the data continues to be weaker and rates keep dropping," Cohn said. Is This a Good Time To Buy a Home? It is as good a time as any to buy a home in the U.S.—meaning that buyers are still facing significant challenges even as mortgage rates dip slightly. "I expect mortgage rates to eventually fall further, but this is not guaranteed, and the timing is also challenging to predict," Hale said. "Trying to decide whether it's a good time to buy is about more than just mortgage rates. Buyers should think about what they want and need from a home, and consider their options." Those who are on the fence between renting and owning, Hale said, are likely to find that the monthly costs are still tipped pretty heavily in favor of renting in many markets, "but even in this kind of environment, home ownership can be a good choice, especially for those planning to be in their next home for a longer amount of time." Waiting too long could be risky, however, especially if mortgage rates continue falling. "The interest rate market is still unpredictable and waiting too long risks many buyers coming into the market, affecting supply and increasing home prices," Crescenzo said. Will Rates Continue Falling This Year? Cohn believes that the August jobs report will be a key factor in the Fed's decision at its September meeting. "If the report is anything like the July report, the Fed will cut rates in September," she said. "The only curveball will be the impact that the new tariffs have on the rate of inflation. If inflation increases, it may keep the Fed and rates in a holding pattern." Hale said that whether the Fed will cut rates during its meeting in mid-September will ultimately depend on the next few data readings, though she believes "the elements for a Fed rate cut in September are falling into place." A cut would help mortgage rates fall, but longer-term rates often move before the Fed does, Hale said, and the monetary policy outlook is just one factor investors are considering. "For this reason, mortgage rates and the Fed's rate don't always move in tandem," she said. "For example, from the time that the Fed first cut rates in September 2024 until early January, mortgage rates actually increased by almost the same amount that the Fed cut--a percentage point. In this instance, I expect that mortgage rates are likely to move lower at least until the Fed's first cut, which I expect in September."
