Liam Delap chooses to sign for Chelsea — and turns down United

Times2 days ago

Liam Delap is expected to sign for Chelsea after suitors of the England Under-21 international were informed he will not be joining them.
The west London club are now progressing with a move to sign the 22-year-old Ipswich Town striker, and are increasingly optimistic the deal will be concluded. In turn, Ipswich are looking take Marc Guiu, Chelsea's 19-year-old striker, on loan for next season. Delap is available for £30million due to a relegation release clause in his contract at Ipswich, who finished second bottom in the Premier League this season.
He had attracted interest from Manchester United as well as Chelsea, who were both considered the leading contenders for his signature. However, United's failure to qualify for the Champions League, after losing the Europa League final, has made them a less enticing prospect, and it is understood that United, as well as other suitors, have been told he will not be joining them. Newcastle United have also held an interest in the former Manchester City academy graduate while Everton have also spoken to him.
Delap, 22, is keen to play in Europe and wants to join a club where he would play regularly. It is now expected that Delap will move to Chelsea, subject to an agreement over personal terms and the meeting of Delap's release clause.
Chelsea are keen to provide more competition for striker Nicolas Jackson, having spent much of the second half of the season without a recognised No9 due to injuries.
They have also targeted Hugo Ekitike, of Eintracht Frankfurt, but his valuation is regarded as too high, reportedly €100million (about £84million), while Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig was another on the club's list.
Delap, who scored 12 Premier League goals this season and set up two more, is believed to have wanted his future sorted before he takes part in the England U21 European Championships, which begin on June 11.
Ekitike has scored 22 goals in 48 appearances, having joined from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Sesko, meanwhile, has scored 21 goals from 45 appearances in all competitions this term and reportedly has a release clause of £62million.

Arne Slot's Florian Wirtz intervention as Saudi clubs prepare Liverpool swoop

Liverpool might have lost Trent Alexander-Arnold but they are still hopeful of having a huge transfer window to help retain their title as they bid to close deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz Liverpool have a big transfer window ahead of them as they look to retain their Premier League title next season. Arne Slot managed to win the title in his first season in charge but the Dutchman is now preparing for some major changes to his side. He's already lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, who have paid a fee of £10million to take him early in time for the Club World Cup, and Jeremie Frimpong is set to arrive as his replacement. ‌ Slot will also be eager to secure some more strength in depth at centre-back and in attack as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah approach the twilight of their careers. ‌ There are some targets who are high up on Slot's shortlist - such as Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz - while the likes of Darwin Nunez has been linked with the exit door. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at the latest Liverpool transfer news as we approach the start of the summer window. How Slot convinced Wirtz Liverpool are edging closer to signing Wirtz after lodging an improved bid closer to Bayer Leverkusen's £126million valuation of the talented star. ‌ Signing Wirtz would be a major coup given the amount of top teams who are interested in the 22-year-old - regarded as one of the most promising midfield stars in world football. Wirtz has just registered 16 goals and 13 assists in all competitions and he is now expected to move to an elite side that can challenge for silverware every season. ‌ Previously, Leverkusen's rivals Bayern Munich looked like favourites to sign Wirtz, but now Liverpool appear to have jumped to the front of the queue thanks to a conversation with boss Slot. According to the Mail, Wirtz was "captivated" by Slot during talks in England earlier this month and cited his "passion" for Liverpool and the power of the supporters. In the same chat, it's claimed Slot shared his vision for the club and how Wirtz fitted into that plan, vowing to make him a key part of his side should he join. ‌ Al Nassr monitoring Diaz Liverpool have already lost Alexander-Arnold and now another star is in danger of departing after reports that Al Nassr are eyeing up a move for Luis Diaz. The Colombian is set to enter the last two years of his contract at Anfield with no new talks over a deal expected as of yet. Al Nassr are preparing for the expected exit of Cristiano Ronaldo amid speculation the Portuguese superstar is set to leave. ‌ The Manchester United legend put out a statement teasing an exit as he claimed "this chapter is over" following the club's final match of the season. Saudi chiefs were eager to lure Liverpool's Mohamed Salah to their league this summer, but after the Egyptian signed a new deal they are now turning their attentions to his team-mate Diaz, according to the Times. Al Hilal are also interested in the forward, the report claims - though the club themselves are said to be looking at Ronaldo too, meaning his future could depend on where Diaz ends up. ‌ Alexander-Arnold's transfer package revealed Now that Alexander-Arnold's move to Madrid has been confirmed, we can discuss the fine print of his deal. We now know that Liverpool won't be left empty handed from his switch to the Bernabeu, despite being expected to leave on a free transfer. Madrid have actually paid Liverpool a small fee for his services after opting to sign him before the end of his contract on June 30. ‌ Liverpool will collect a total of £10million for their boyhood talent - who joined them 20 years ago as a six-year-old. The Reds will rake in £8.4m plus his remaining wages. He is set to sign a six-year deal worth more than £220,000-a-week.

'Man Utd tried to sign me several times – I knew they were still at the top'

Marko Arnautovic had enjoyed six seasons of Premier League football before Manchester United came in for him after a successful spell at Bologna, but the Austrian rejected a move to Old Trafford Marko Arnautovic already admitted he was subject to numerous overtures from Manchester United - but decided to decline an offer to join the Premier League giants. The Inter Milan forward is gearing up for the Champions League final on Saturday, where the Italian giants take on Paris Saint-Germain. A win for the Nerazzurri would see Arnautovic capture his second UCL medal with the Serie A side, having been part of their last triumph in the competition in the 2009/10 season. ‌ The Austria international played just three times during his first stint with Inter but made a name for himself during his four-year spell with Stoke City. ‌ His performances led him to a move to West Ham, where he hit double digits in goals in both seasons he spent in London before earning a big-money transfer to Chinese side Shanghai Port. A return to Italy beckoned in 2021 with Bologna as Arnautovic, who was 33 at the time, enjoyed a career-best season with 14 goals in 33 games before following that up with 10 goals in 22 games in his second campaign. With that came summer interest from United, who had just appointed Erik ten Hag. Reports of the forward potentially arriving at Old Trafford weren't well received by sections of fans, with the club then reportedly pulling out due to the feedback they received despite tabling a bid worth £7.6 million. ‌ However, Arnautovic's agent set the record straight and claimed that it was his player who turned down a move to United, with the forward himself backing up the story in 2022. " Manchester United tried to sign me several times," Arnautovic told Laola1. "And it was a difficult decision to stay in Italy because my family wanted to return to England. "For me, it's clear that the Red Devils remain at the top of the universe. And Bologna, as a name, are not. But that's fine. Here everything is calm, you have time for yourself and no stress. This is only good for me." ‌ The interest in signing the forward was due to the possible departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was said to have wanted to depart Old Trafford after failing to qualify for the Champions League. While the Portuguese legend remained in Manchester beyond the summer, his relationship with Ten Hag deteriorated, leading to the striker conducting a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan in which he slammed his then-manager. "He doesn't respect [me] the way I should deserve [to be respected]," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said of the Dutchman. "But it is what it is. This is why probably, the game against Tottenham, I left. ‌ "Excuses, I see as excuses. I saw many things that, I don't want to criticise him. He can have [a] different opinion than me. They choose the players that they think is better for the team. I respect that but excuses all the time you know; the excuses have short legs, cannot excuse all the time, which is things that don't make sense." Ronaldo eventually left for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in January 2023 after his United contract was ripped up shortly after his interview. Fast-forward two years, and the 40-year-old's time in the Middle East looks to be coming to an end after a social media post sparked doubts over his future. After Al-Nassr's last game of the season, where they lost 3-2 to Al-Fateh, Ronaldo posted a snap of himself on the pitch with a caption that read: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Arsenal's striker dilemma answered as second major Gunners deal close

Mikel Arteta has led Arsenal to a third successive runner-up finish in the Premier League but will need to strengthen with the expectation that the Gunners' rivals also improve As Arsenal continue to wait on Martin Zubimendi, they've been busy in other departments. Midfield and attack appear to be the main priorities this summer, while there has already been movement when it comes to offloading players who have found themselves on the fringes of late. Kieran Tierney and Jorginho are leaving the club this summer, while Neto and Raheem Sterling will return to their parent clubs after loan spells. There will be a fair bit of summer investment, though, with co-chair Josh Kroenke pointing to the arrival of new sporting director Andrea Berta as a precursor to a busy few months. "We plan to invest to get behind winning and doing better next season," Kroenke wrote in the programme ahead of Arsenal's final home league game. "We're delighted we have our sporting director, Andrea, who will play an important role in this. "He is part of a unified and strong team, supported by the board, who are crystal clear on exactly what we need to do and the way in which we want to do it. The right way. The Arsenal way." It's not just about new signings, though, with Arsenal also attempting to tie key men down to new contracts. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from around the Emirates Stadium. Gabriel contract talks progressing Arsenal are in advanced talks over a new deal for Gabriel after the centre-back's impressive season. According to BBC Sport, an agreement for the Brazil international is drawing ever closer. Gabriel and fellow centre-back William Saliba are both under contract until 2027, and there is a sense the Gunners want to avoid the risk of either entering the final year and potentially leaving for nothing. Real Madrid are known to be fans of Saliba, while Gabriel's form last season served Arsenal well in the league and in Europe. The 27-year-old has played more than 200 times for Arsenal since joining from Lille back in 2020. He also made his senior Brazil debut while with the Gunners, and has played in 13 of his country's 14 World Cup qualifying games. Striker dilemma addressed Arsenal's search for a new striker has been whittled down to two men - Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko. Mirror Football has weighed up the pros and cons of the pair, while Gyokeres' international manager has given his verdict on the Sweden star's next move. "No, of course not," Jon Dahl Tomasson told Swedish outlet Aftonbladet when asked if he had a preference over Gyokeres' next move. "Because then it would be blown up like this [stretches arms]. "There are definitely players changing clubs! We know that each year," he continued. "If you look at each player, you need to make the right choice. "You actually don't know if it's the right choice before you're at the club. You have family as well you have to have in mind. It's not easy, but at the end of the day, that's [football]." Ndicka deal off the table Evan Ndicka is set to stay at Roma despite interest from Arsenal. The French centre-back has impressed in Serie A despite a tumultuous season for his club, who cycled through three managers en route to a fifth-place finish. The Ivorian international, who joined the Giallorossi in 2023, didn't miss a minute in the league under Daniele De Rossi, Ivan Juric or Claudio Ranieri. He was also a regular as Roma reached the round of 16 in the Europa League eventually losing to Athletic Bilbao. According to Corriere dello Sport, though, he's going nowhere this summer. The publication names him as one of eight "immovable" stars set to stay in the Italian capital, with Gian Piero Gasperini expected to take over as manager next term.
