Carlos Santana hits grand slam as Guardians beat Reds 11-2 to avoid season sweep by Francona's club
CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Santana slugged his sixth career grand slam and the Cleveland Guardians beat Cincinnati 11-2 on Wednesday, snapping the Reds' five-game win streak and denying manager Terry Francona a season sweep of his former team.
Santana's third-inning slam came on the 15th anniversary of his major league debut. It was his eighth homer this season and made it 5-0, helping Cleveland salvage the finale of this three-game series. Francona's Reds swept the Guardians in three games at Cincinnati last month.
The Guardians had five straight hits to open a four-run sixth for a nine-run lead, including a three-run homer by Lane Thomas. Cleveland's 11 runs were a season high.
Thomas' homer was his first this season after returning from the injured list this week. He had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice.
José Ramírez hit an RBI double to extend his career-long on-base streak to 37 games, the longest active streak in the majors. He has a hit in 11 straight games.
Logan Allen (4-4) went six innings and gave up solo homers to Elly De La Cruz and TJ Friedl. He struck out six.
Nick Lodolo (4-5) lasted only 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs.
Cincinnati's Christian Encarnacion-Strand was hit on the bill of his helmet by a 97 mph pitch from Emmanuel Clase in the ninth but stayed in the game.

The relationship between coach Fran Dunphy and Steve Nesmith started 46 years ago when Nesmith was a high school student. Dunphy coached a young Nesmith at Malvern Prep and later on at American University. It's where Dunphy became more than just a coach but also a Big Brother. "I can still hear Coach Dunphy in my mind: Be strong, don't give up, there's always tomorrow," Nesmith said. "I admire what he has accomplished. He is truly a good man, which means everything to me," Dunphy said. Dunphy went on to coach at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and La Salle University, becoming the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history. He retired this year. Nesmith and Dunphy reunited at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America's national conference in Philadelphia. Dunphy has been part of the organization for years. Both are now reflecting on their 40 years of friendship and the impact they've had on each other's lives. "What I learned from Coach Dunphy, not just as a coach but in life, and I obtained life experiences through being around this gentleman, listening to him, because it was never about basketball," Nesmith said. Dunphy added, "There's something inside him that says, I want to do this, I want to get better, I want to be the best person I can be so, yeah, maybe I had a little role, but I wouldn't ever minimize what he's done on his own." CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence, Marcus Allen, said Dunphy and Nesmith's story is one of countless examples of the difference a mentor can have on the lives of young people. "Big Brothers Big Sisters is here to not create potential in kids, we are here to protect it," Allen said. As for Dunphy and Nesmith, the two may have helped each other win basketball games, but they also helped each other win at life.

Rangers hit season-high 6 home runs in a 16-3 romp over the Twins
Josh Smith, Jake Burger and Wyatt Langford went deep in the first two innings and the Texas Rangers hit a season-high six home runs in a 16-3 romp over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. Evan Carter, Adolis Garcia and Sam Haggerty also homered as Texas scored 16 runs for the second time in three games. The Rangers beat Minnesota 16-4 on Tuesday night. Patrick Corbin (4-5) allowed three runs in five-plus innings for his first victory since May 14, retiring 12 straight hitters at one point. Tigers option struggling reliever Beau Brieske to Triple-A Toledo
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Detroit Tigers optioned reliever Beau Brieske to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, one day after the right-hander was hit hard in a 10-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Brieske gave up five runs, three hits and two walks in 1/3 inning on Wednesday night. The poor outing, which lifted his ERA to 6.55, led to his demotion to the minors. 'We've just got to get him to execute better,' Tigers manager AJ Hinch said Thursday before Detroit faced Baltimore in the deciding matchup of a three-game series. 'He needs a reset to get himself back in the strike zone. Utilizing all his pitches will lead to better results.' Brieske has allowed 16 earned runs, 24 hits and 12 walks in just 22 innings this season. The Tigers hoped he could work his way out of the funk, but his struggle against the Orioles was telling. 'Last night was kind of the end of the conversation, where it came to now is the time to do it,' Hinch said. 'This has been building over the course of a few outings for him, where execution just wasn't going well for him.' The Tigers filled the void in the bullpen by recalling left-hander Matt Gage from Toledo. 'He's been really good,' Hinch said. 'He really has performed his way here. It's a reward for him for dominating Triple-A.' Gage was 1-1 with a 1.67 ERA in 23 appearances with the Mud Hens.
