2025 Rutgers Football Predictions: Scarlet Knights Ranked 62nd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where Rutgers lands in my Ultimate 136.
Rutgers ranking: 62
Last year's ranking: 36
Top player: WR DT Sheffield: First-Team All-AAC selection at North Texas last season; was one of 12 players in FBS last year to record 11 TD catches.

RJ's take: Greg Schiano returns 22 players from his two-deep last year, 10 of whom were starters. And, believe me, he's going to need that depth come October. Don't look now, but Rutgers has put together back-to-back winning seasons for the first time as Big Ten members.

While the loss of Kyle Monangai will be felt, Florida Atlantic transfer CJ Campbell rushed for 844 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Antwan Raymond was serviceable with just over 450 yards on the ground for Rutgers last year. Athan Kaliakmanis has two years as a starter at Minnesota and Rutgers and while he's not likely to throw for 4,000 yards, he's an experienced field general capable of throwing for 3,000 and 25 touchdowns.
The problem for Rutgers is the whole second half of their schedule, which features Oregon, at Illinois, at Ohio State and at Penn State. Assuming the Scarlet Knights begin 3-0 with wins against Ohio, Miami (Ohio) and Norfolk State, they'll need to find ways to claw three wins from some combination of Iowa, at Minnesota, at Purdue, at Washington and Maryland.

Oklahoma Sooners are a blue blood, but a rival got left out
College football has 136 programs at the FBS level for the 2025 season. Those teams are spread across 10 conferences (with two schools playing as FBS Independents), and compete for the right to go to the College Football Playoff and take their best shot at the national championship. There haven't always been this many teams at college football's highest level, but the sport has always had a large number of schools spread across the country competing for the same thing. College football has been around for over 150 years, and some programs are just better at winning than others. But which programs are the cream of the crop, and which fall below that very lofty standard? That's the question that On3 Sports college football analyst Andy Staples attempted to answer on Monday. He put out a list of college football's "blue blood" programs over the course of the sport's history. The Oklahoma Sooners were an obvious choice to make the cut, and they did so. OU is a shoo-in as one of college football's all-time historically great programs, a no-doubt inclusion in the blue blood club. Staples used two criteria to make his list of 12 true blue bloods. First, the program had to be in the top 15 in all-time winning percentage, with a minimum of 750 total games played. Secondly, the program had to have at least one national title in at least two of three eras: AP or Coaches Poll in the two poll eras, or be the winner of the final game in the BCS and playoff era. Oklahoma joined the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Miami Hurricanes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Tennessee Volunteers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, and USC Trojans as the best programs of all-time. The Auburn Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Florida Gators, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Penn State Nittany Lions just missed the cut. Taking a look at those distinctions, I feel that there are a few levels that certain teams fall into. Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC feel like obvious choices to me. Those five programs are the most important in telling the history of college football. Michigan, Texas, and Nebraska would easily make the cut for me as well. They fall a step behind the first five, but still should be pretty clear picks. If I'm making this list, LSU and Penn State are probably safe if we capped the list at 12, with Florida and Georgia just sneaking in for me. Staples putting teams like Florida State, Miami, and Tennessee in over a couple of teams that missed the cut is a bit of a head-scratcher, and I think Auburn and Clemson bring up the rear of the 17 teams mentioned. It's hard for me to see the argument for the Seminoles, Hurricanes, and Volunteers making the list over the Cornhuskers, especially, but also over the Nittany Lions and Gators. The resume for FSU, in particular, is tough to ignore, but the 'Huskers have got to be in there. The good news for OU fans is that there's no doubt about the Sooners' place in college football. Out of the many programs that have played at the highest organizational level over the course of the long history of the sport, Oklahoma stands tall among the best of the best elite programs in college football history. College Football Oklahoma QB John Mateer Denies Gambling, Says Venmos Were 'Inside Jokes' Published Aug. 12, 2025 7:53 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer says he has never gambled, and the school says there is no NCAA investigation after a recent report showed Mateer twice paid someone on Venmo in 2022 for "sports gambling." "The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false," Mateer said in a statement Tuesday on social media. "My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends." Mateer, who was at Washington State during the time in question, said he can understand why the Venmo descriptions could lead one to believe otherwise, so he decided to set the record straight. "I have never bet on sports," he said. "I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling." ADVERTISEMENT In a statement, Oklahoma said it uses ProhiBet for comprehensive monitoring of sports gambling activities. "OU takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situations of concern," the statement said. "OU Athletics is unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending." Mateer followed former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma this past offseason. He passed for 3,139 yards with 29 touchdowns and just seven interceptions and ran for 826 yards and 15 scores last season. Venables and Oklahoma's players have raved consistently about Mateer's leadership. Week 1 is set to feature a handful of electric heavyweight matchups of nationally top-ranked teams and a plethora of storylines, including first-year head coaches making their debuts and the impact of NIL and the transfer portal. That said, FOX Sports' RJ Young put together a list of one standout player from each of the top 10 teams in the AP Top 25 college football preseason poll, which was unveiled Monday. [Related: RJ Young's Ultimate 136 college football rankings ] Six of these 10 players will be facing off against one another in Week 1, as there are three top-10 tilts on the schedule: No. 1 Texas vs. No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Clemson vs. No. 9 LSU and No. 6 Notre Dame vs. No. 10 Miami (Fla.). 10 Best College Football Players from AP Top 10 Teams Francis Mauigoa is one of the top offensive linemen in college football. (Photo by) ADVERTISEMENT Stats: Started 26 games in two seasons for the Hurricanes, anchoring an offensive line that led the nation in scoring (43.9 points per game); projected to be the first offensive tackle drafted in the 2026 NFL Draft . Mauigoa enters the year as one of the top OT draft prospects. At 6-foot-6, Mauigoa is massive and will be vital to protecting quarterback Carson Beck this season, giving the Hurricanes hope to make their first CFP appearance. Garrett Nussmeier is entering his second season as LSU's starting QB. (Photo by) Stats: Finished fifth in FBS in passing yards (4,052 yards) and tied for eighth in pass touchdowns (29) last season. Like Mauigoa, Nussmeier will also vie to be one of the top players selected at his position in the 2026 NFL Draft. He was one of the best passers in the SEC last year, which was his first season as a starter, while also having the pressure to replace then-reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Williams had a season to remember in 2024, and he was only 17 years old. His touchdown catch that helped Alabama beat Georgia was widely viewed as one of the top plays of the season, showing his ability to make contested catches and speed. That also helped him earn a spot on the cover of "College Football 26." Dillon Thieneman was a star at Purdue before transferring to Oregon. One of the best defensive players to transfer this past offseason, Theineman was a standout for a Purdue team that has been one of the worst programs in a power conference over the past couple of years. He won Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2023, when he recorded six interceptions. Jeremiyah Love was a key reason for Notre Dame's deep CFP run. (Photo by) Stats: Scored a rushing touchdown in 13 consecutive games last season, setting a Notre Dame record; was one of 10 FBS players to record 1,100-plus rushing yards and 19-plus total touchdowns. Love was instrumental in Notre Dame's breakthrough season, which ended with an appearance in the national championship game. His 98-yard touchdown run against Indiana was key for Notre Dame in its first-round win, which was also one of the five games he rushed for over 100 yards in. Entering his junior year, Allen is part of the next wave of Georgia defenders with NFL promise. (Photo by) Stats: Top five all-time in Clemson history in passing yards, passing touchdowns, pass attempts and completions; only player in FBS to throw for 35 touchdowns with six or fewer interceptions. After an underwhelming first season as Clemson's starting quarterback in 2023, Klubnik broke through in 2024. He certainly wasn't the reason why Clemson lost to Texas in the CFP, either. He threw for 336 yards in that game as he seeks to be one of the top quarterbacks selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. Jeremiah Smith had a freshman season for the ages. (Photo) Stats: Set Ohio State freshman records in receptions (76), receiving yards (1,315) and touchdown catches (15); was tied for second in FBS in touchdown catches and fourth in receiving yards; his nine catches of 40-plus yards are tied for the most in the FBS. Smith is arguably the best player in college football entering the 2025 season, with many preseason lists ranking him as such. Even though he's only a sophomore, some have even said that he would've been a top-10 pick had he been draft-eligible following his freshman season. Cox/Getty Images) Stats: Finished tied for fifth in the Big Ten in tackles for loss (13) and tied for sixth in sacks (8.5); also forced two fumbles and recorded 42 total tackles. The Nittany Lions had several players that Young could've named the best on their roster. Drew Allar is viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation entering the year, while Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen make up the best running back tandem in the sport. Sutton gets the nod, though, after his 8.5-sack season. Arch Manning is entering his first season as Texas' full-time starting QB. (Photo) Stats: Only FBS or NFL quarterback in the past 25 years to record a 75-plus-yard touchdowb pass, a 65-plus-yard touchdown run and another 50-plus-yard touchdown pass in the same game; went 2-0 as a starter last year, throwing for 583 yards and totaling 5 touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing) in those two games. Similar to Penn State, Texas also has a lot of returning players who could've been named the top player on its roster. Ultimately, Manning got the honor, and it's hard not to see why. He showed his promise as one of the best quarterback prospects in recent memory in the handful of games he played in last year, showing tremendous arm strength and an ability to operate as a runner.
