Oklahoma Sooners are a blue blood, but a rival got left out

College football has 136 programs at the FBS level for the 2025 season. Those teams are spread across 10 conferences (with two schools playing as FBS Independents), and compete for the right to go to the College Football Playoff and take their best shot at the national championship.
There haven't always been this many teams at college football's highest level, but the sport has always had a large number of schools spread across the country competing for the same thing. College football has been around for over 150 years, and some programs are just better at winning than others. But which programs are the cream of the crop, and which fall below that very lofty standard?
That's the question that On3 Sports college football analyst Andy Staples attempted to answer on Monday. He put out a list of college football's "blue blood" programs over the course of the sport's history. The Oklahoma Sooners were an obvious choice to make the cut, and they did so. OU is a shoo-in as one of college football's all-time historically great programs, a no-doubt inclusion in the blue blood club.
Staples used two criteria to make his list of 12 true blue bloods. First, the program had to be in the top 15 in all-time winning percentage, with a minimum of 750 total games played. Secondly, the program had to have at least one national title in at least two of three eras: AP or Coaches Poll in the two poll eras, or be the winner of the final game in the BCS and playoff era.
Oklahoma joined the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Miami Hurricanes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Tennessee Volunteers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, and USC Trojans as the best programs of all-time. The Auburn Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Florida Gators, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Penn State Nittany Lions just missed the cut.
Taking a look at those distinctions, I feel that there are a few levels that certain teams fall into. Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC feel like obvious choices to me. Those five programs are the most important in telling the history of college football. Michigan, Texas, and Nebraska would easily make the cut for me as well. They fall a step behind the first five, but still should be pretty clear picks.
If I'm making this list, LSU and Penn State are probably safe if we capped the list at 12, with Florida and Georgia just sneaking in for me. Staples putting teams like Florida State, Miami, and Tennessee in over a couple of teams that missed the cut is a bit of a head-scratcher, and I think Auburn and Clemson bring up the rear of the 17 teams mentioned.
It's hard for me to see the argument for the Seminoles, Hurricanes, and Volunteers making the list over the Cornhuskers, especially, but also over the Nittany Lions and Gators. The resume for FSU, in particular, is tough to ignore, but the 'Huskers have got to be in there.
The good news for OU fans is that there's no doubt about the Sooners' place in college football. Out of the many programs that have played at the highest organizational level over the course of the long history of the sport, Oklahoma stands tall among the best of the best elite programs in college football history.

NFL to continue end zone social justice slogans including ‘End Racism' in upcoming season: Report

The NFL will continue to stencil social justice slogans in end zones for the sixth straight season, the Associated Press reported Thursday, carrying on a program that began in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests against police brutality. As has been the case in recent years, teams will be able to choose between 'End Racism,' 'Choose Love,' 'Inspire Change' or 'Stop Hate' in one end zone, with 'Inspire Change' replacing 'Vote,' offered in 2024. The opposite end zone will feature 'It Takes All of Us.' Players can also voluntarily choose to wear one of the slogans on their helmets. The NFL will also continue other end zone slogans such as 'Salute to Service,' honoring veterans, the AP reported. Advertisement 'We're working hand-in-hand with players, and alongside our clubs, to amplify player voices and underscore what is most important to them,' Anna Isaacson, the NFL's senior vice president of social responsibility, told the AP. 'For decades, the NFL and its players have been a unifying force in American culture and society that brings people of all cultures and backgrounds together to enjoy America's most popular sport.' From 2021 to 2024, the NFL featured 'End Racism' in one of the end zones during the Super Bowl, but in 2025, the league decided that Super Bowl LIX would feature 'Choose Love' alongside 'It Takes All of Us' instead. That decision faced criticism in a moment when diversity initiatives were under attack, including by the recently inaugurated President Donald Trump, who was in attendance at the Super Bowl. But NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told The Athletic in February that the decision to swap 'End Racism' for 'Choose Love' was in response to tragedies in the months leading up to the game, including a terrorist attack in New Orleans, the wildfires in the Los Angeles area and a plane crash near Washington, D.C. 'Choose Racism' had been previously featured in the NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia and will remain a stencil option this upcoming season. It's unclear which slogans will be featured at Super Bowl LX. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle

Try it free The second half of the 2025 season hasn't gone the Mets' way, but Pete Alonso becoming the franchise's all-time leading home run hitter earlier this week was a welcome reprieve from the past couple of months. Chris 'Mad Dog' Russo might not get what all the hubbub is about, which he made clear in an on-air rant that stemmed from his displeasure with the enthusiastic call from SNY play-by-play voice Gary Cohen. In the Mets clubhouse and in a special pregame celebration Thursday night, however, there was recognition of what it means to surpass four-time World Series winner Darryl Strawberry. 4 New York Mets' Pete Alonso (20) waves to fans during a ceremony to honor his 253rd home run before a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025. AP And there was immense appreciation for Alonso, who has so naturally endeared himself to New York and Mets fans since the day he put on the blue and orange. 4 Brandon Nimmo celebrates a hit on Thursday. AP 'Definitely important [to celebrate]. I mean, anytime somebody accomplishes something like that you want to celebrate it because it's taken a lot of years of hard work to get to that point,' Brandon Nimmo told The Post before the Mets took on the Braves. 'And by no means do you want to minimize that by the team going through a tough stretch. 'Obviously, with him accomplishing this feat of breaking the home run record, you want to celebrate that and make sure it's as special as it can possibly be for him.' The rain delay Wednesday night postponed the ceremony, but the Mets made sure the Polar Bear got his moment. Radio broadcaster Howie Rose read a heartfelt speech, highlighting Alonso's 53 first-year home runs and postseason heroics. 4 Pete Alonso of the New York Mets hitting a double. And when Rose asked Alonso what it would mean to continue his career with the Mets, the roar of applause from the crowd drowned out his answer. 'He's someone who does it on an everyday basis and makes it look easy,' said Nimmo, who is Alonso's longest-tenured Mets teammate. 4 Pete Alonso acknowledges the fans at Citi Field ahead of Thursday's game. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Alonso, who was tied with Kyle Schwarber at 254 for the second-most homers in the majors since 2019 entering the game, has a player option for $24 million in 2026 that he likely won't take. It would make him a free agent for a second straight year. Only this time, the Mets can't give him a qualifying offer after doing so during last offseason's negotiations. 'I've just seen him continue to make adjustments year after year,' Nimmo said, 'to the point where I feel like this year is the best I've ever seen him. Since 2019, obviously, 2019 was amazing. To be able to do what he's done this year — with everybody knowing the power that he has and everything — he's been a very consistent hitter. 'He's been a very good hitter all-around, too, not just power. He's driven in almost 100 runs already. Obviously, his OPS is in a great position, close to that .900. To be able to do that in Citi Field has been amazing. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS 'To be able to watch that evolution, it's been really special for me. I'm really, really proud of him because to make those adjustments has taken a lot of hard work on his end, and he's definitely been working to get the most out of himself.'
