The prison design will draw from existing correctional facilities in Palghar, Taloda, and Delhi, and include staff quarters as part of an integrated complex."The project must follow all structural and functional norms laid out in jail manuals. We are not just building a prison, but a modern correctional facility," Bawankule said during a review meeting held with CM Devendra Fadnavis. The proposed prison was one of several major urban projects discussed during the meeting, which signalled a broader move towards coordinated planning in housing, transportation, and civic infrastructure. The
(MSIDC) and
(NIT) will collaborate to execute the project.Commercial hubs including Cotton Market, Dahi Bazaar, Flower Market, and Itwari Bazaar are set for redevelopment, with municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari confirming that the Cotton Market plan passed sub-division scrutiny and awaits final approvals.
Bawankule instructed MSIDC and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to finalise tenders within three months. The meeting also reviewed infrastructure upgrades for Mor Bhavan and Ganeshpeth bus stations.
The CM suggested Mor Bhavan serve both city and private buses, and Ganeshpeth be developed to accommodate both city and ST buses. He further called for integrated redevelopment of major commercial areas, including Netaji Market and Santra Market.Another major decision was the launch of a housing project for 7,000 contract workers in Kamptee under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). MSIDC was asked to begin construction without delay. "All projects linked to Nagpur's development must meet high-quality standards and be completed on time," Bawankule emphasised. The meeting also cleared the redevelopment of the govt printing press in Kamptee, which will be restructured to accommodate both the press and offices for the Department of Food and Civil Supplies.

Women are now key drivers of progress in India: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday highlighted that in the last 11 years, women have emerged as key drivers of progress in the country, with the Narendra Modi government launching various schemes to empower Nari Shakti. Highlighting '11 years of Sashakt Nari', the Finance Minister said that under the PM Jan Dhan Yojna, the world's largest financial inclusion scheme, 55.7 per cent of accounts were held by women, which reflected their empowerment at the grassroots level. She further pointed out that women now account for 68 per cent of the MUDRA loan beneficiaries nationwide. These loans have enabled lakhs of women to become entrepreneurs and pursue their dreams independently. Apart from this, 74 per cent of those getting benefits under the Start-Up India entrepreneurs scheme are also women. Besides, 73 per cent of houses under the PMAY (Gramin) scheme for the poor are owned by women, she said. The Finance Minister also mentioned that 10 crore LPG connections have been given to poor women under the Ujjwala Yojana. These have come as a big boon for them, making their life easier with accompanying health benefits. They have been freed from the harmful smoke of wood and other fuels, such as cow dung, that were used for cooking earlier. The Jan Dhan scheme has been a huge success in financial inclusion, as the average bank balance per account in March 2015 was Rs 1,065, which has now increased to Rs 4,352. Around 80 per cent of the accounts are active, she added. As many as 66.6 per cent of Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas, and 29.56 crore (55.7 per cent) belong to women account holders. These accounts are used on a large scale. People are also depositing money in them. However, this scheme allows zero balance accounts, and only 8.4 per cent of the accounts have zero balance. When the Modi government first came to power about 10 years ago, it set a target of providing financial and banking services to every citizen. For this, zero balance bank accounts were opened in the banks for the poorest of the poor under 'Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojana' launched on August 28, 2014.

PMAY beneficiaries to get two tractor-loads of sand free: Odisha Min Pujari
BHUBANESWAR: In a move to reduce financial burden of the poor and low income group people, especially beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the state government on Saturday announced to provide two tractor-loads of sand free of cost for house construction. Informing the decision, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari told mediapersons that a proposal is also being drafted to ensure supply of sand to people at reasonable rates for house construction. 'The government has decided to issue permit to poor and low income group people to get sand free of cost ensuring that affordable housing becomes a reality. This will reduce the construction cost of the poor people especially the PMAY beneficiaries,' the minister said. At the same time, sand prices will be regulated to make it affordable for different income groups who depend on local suppliers and dealers, mostly dominated by the sand mafia. 'Illegal mining of sand from riverbed by sand mafia and sometime by the Water Resources department for general purpose, and transportation of sand using heavy vehicles like Hyva trucks are the other areas of concern. The government will take a call on the two issues soon,' Pujari said.

Bawankule slams NMC over delay in retaining wall works
Nagpur: Nearly 20 months after the devastating flash floods of September 2023, critical retaining wall works across Nagpur's rivers remain incomplete, exposing the city to yet another monsoon disaster. At a high-level review meeting on Saturday, guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule criticised the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and contractors, citing delays, fund mismanagement, and subletting of major projects. The meeting, attended by senior officials including chief engineer Manoj Talewar, MLAs Pravin Datke, Krishna Khopde, and former corporator Narendra Borkar, revealed that despite a sanctioned outlay of Rs204.71 crore for flood mitigation including Rs163.23 crore for 56 retaining wall works and Rs33.74 crore for 41 damaged roads, progress was sluggish. NMC's own presentation claimed 50 wall projects were complete and 5 ongoing. However, independent reports and ground feedback exposed a different picture, especially in flood-hit areas like Kumbhartoli, where no work had begun. Officials admitted that contractors who took up assignments worth Rs10 crore and Rs6 crore under the Rs150 crore tender sublet them to petty agencies with limited capacity. "This subcontracting without oversight has brought the entire project to a crawl," Borkar told TOI, who also attended the meeting. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brits Are Replacing Costly AC's With This Tiny Cooler AiraBreeze Learn More Undo Even more alarming was the funds bottleneck. Though tenders worth Rs154.42 crore were floated, only Rs86.63 crore was disbursed. Contractors blamed this for halting work midway. NMC has now requested the state govt to release the remaining Rs70.26 crore. Bawankule, visibly displeased, instructed the NMC to submit a fresh proposal to the state govt for additional funds to cover remaining disaster management works, including parallel sewage and stormwater infrastructure. He also directed the municipal commissioner to immediately conduct zone-wise meetings with MLAs and ex-corporators and prepare a detailed disaster preparedness report before the monsoon sets in. He further ordered two Janta Darbar sessions at Gandhibagh and Lakadganj to directly address citizens' grievances. A zone-level review will also be held ahead of the next public hearing. Borkar pointed out that NMC is prioritising projects in areas with no immediate threat, while vulnerable localities continue to suffer. "This mismanagement is nothing short of negligence," he said.
