Cissé names 27-man Libya squad for World Cup qualifiers

BY Libyan Express Aug 20, 2025 - 05:09 Updated: Aug 20, 2025 - 10:11 Cissé recalls key players for Libya's World Cup push
Libya's national team coach, Senegalese Aliou Cissé, has announced a 27-man preliminary squad for an internal training camp in Benghazi ahead of next month's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Angola and Eswatini.
The list features the return of several senior players who had previously stepped away from international duty in protest at policies under the former football federation. Striker Hamdou Elhouni and defender Mohammed Al-Munir are among those recalled.
Cissé also included eight players from Al-Ahly Tripoli, who recently secured the domestic league title, highlighting the club's strong contribution to the national side.
The squad features a number of foreign-based players competing in neighbouring Tunisia, including Club Africain trio Ali Youssef, Fahd Al-Mesmari and Osama Al-Shreimi, along with Noureddine Al-Ghleib, who recently joined ES Sahel. Also named was striker Mohamed Soula of Kuwait's Qadsia SC.
One of the notable omissions is Hamburg defender Daniel Al-Fadhli, part of a group of Libyan professionals in Europe who were not included in this camp.
The squad will convene on August 24 in Benghazi for a closed training camp before travelling to Luanda to face Angola on September 4. Four days later, Libya will host Eswatini in Benghazi in the eighth round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Osama Elsharimi signs with Club Africain until 2027

BY Libyan Express Jul 31, 2025 - 04:59 Elsharimi rejects Egyptian interest, chooses Club Africain move Tunisian top-flight side Club Africain has announced the signing of Libyan midfielder Osama Elsharimi, who joins from Al-Swehli SC on a contract that runs until 30 June 2027. The 24-year-old, considered one of the promising talents in Libyan football, becomes the third Libyan player currently in the Club Africain squad, alongside Ali Youssef and Fahd Al-Masmari. The club published a promotional photo featuring the trio on its official Facebook page with the caption: 'From the proud land of Libya to the capital Tunis – and specifically to Hedi Ennaifer Stadium, the historic home of popular football. Pictured: Fahd, Elsharimi and Ali.' In its welcome message, the club wrote: 'Welcome, Osama Elsharimi, to the People's Team – Club Africain. The player has signed a contract until 30 June 2027.' Elsharimi's transfer comes after weeks of speculation linking him with Zamalek SC of Egypt, with several media reports suggesting that the Cairo-based club had expressed strong interest in securing his services. However, the player ultimately opted for a move to Tunisia, choosing Club Africain as the next step in his professional career. The move is being seen by observers as a vote of confidence in the quality of Libyan footballers, as more North African clubs turn their attention to players emerging from the Libyan Premier League. Elsharimi had impressed with his performances at Al-Swehli, earning praise for his composure, vision, and work rate in midfield. For many Libyan fans, the signing also reflects a growing trend of young local talents seeking professional development in neighbouring leagues, amid ongoing challenges facing domestic football at home. With three Libyans now featuring in Club Africain's senior team, the move may also offer valuable cohesion and support for Elsharimi as he adapts to the Tunisian league. The 13-time Tunisian champions are known for their passionate fan base and historic status in North African football, making this a high-profile platform for the Libyan midfielder to prove himself on a regional stage.
