CM Fadnavis shielding 'corrupt' ministers, claims Uddhav Thackeray

Speaking at a protest to demand the sacking of "corrupt" ministers, primarily from the rival Shiv Sena, Thackeray said agitation will continue until those ministers are shown the door
Press Trust of India Mumbai
Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray on Monday accused Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of "shielding corrupt" ministers in his cabinet, and claimed the ruling Mahayuti has relegated the state to last position in development and top in corruption.
Speaking at a protest organised here to demand the sacking of "corrupt" ministers, primarily from the rival Shiv Sena, which is a constituent of the Mahayuti along with the BJP and NCP, Thackeray said the agitation will continue until those ministers are shown the door.
The Sena (UBT) said it has carried out similar agitation across the state.
Thackeray asked the party workers to inform the public about "corrupt" actions of the Mahayuti ministers.
"We gave them (government) evidence (against ministers) and yet there is no action on them. Someone is running a dance bar, another has a bag full of notes. There is no need of even any probe now, yet the CM does not sack the ministers," Thackeray said.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has been demanding resignation of ministers Yogesh Kadam, Sanjay Shirsat, Sanjay Rathod, all belonging to the ruling Shiv Sena, and Manikrao Kokate of the NCP.
"I pity Fadnavis. Why is he shielding these corrupt ministers? He does not have the courage to sack them despite the brute majority," Thackeray claimed.
"The Mahayuti has relegated Maharashtra to the last position and top position in corruption," the former CM alleged.
Kadam has been accused by Thackeray's party of running a dance bar with a permit in his mother's name, a charge denied by the minister.
Kokate has been facing flak for allegedly playing rummy in the state legislative council and for "insensitive" remarks against farmers.
The Sena (UBT) has been targeting Shirsat after a video showed him purportedly sitting in a room with a partially opened bag containing bundles of cash. The minister has rubbished the claim and said the bag contained only clothes.
The Thackeray-led party has also accused minister Sanjay Rathod of indulging in corruption.
It also sought to link BJP minister Girish Mahajan with an alleged "honeytrap" scandal.
Kadam, Shirsat and Rathod were among the 39 MLAs who backed Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde when he rebelled against Thackeray in 2022. The rebellion resulted in the collapse of the Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government and split into the then undivided Shiv Sena.
Uddhav Thackeray recalled that when Shiv Sena-BJP coalition was in power from 1995-99, five ministers were asked to quit by Sena founder Bal Thackeray because there were allegations of corruption against them.
The Sena (UBT) chief also targeted the Centre over Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as vice president.
He said no explanation was given for Dhankhar's sudden resignation, and sought information on his "disappearance".
"Where is the (former) vice president?" Thackeray asked.
In a sudden move, Dhankhar resigned as vice president on July 22 citing medical reasons. The opposition has raised questions over his resignation.

Don't link J&K's statehood to terror, Omar says day after SC's Pahalgam reference

Omar Abdullah (File photo) SRINAGAR: Chief minister Omar Abdullah decried Friday the practice of tying terror attacks to J&K's political fate and asserted that Pakistan should not be allowed to influence it through terrorism, a day after Supreme Court observed that 'incidents like Pahalgam' must be considered when deciding on statehood. 'Will the killers of Pahalgam and their masters in the neighbouring country decide whether we will be a state?' Omar said in his Independence Day speech, his first since taking office last Oct and the first by a CM since Article 370's abrogation and J&K's conversion into a Union territory Aug 2019. Speaking at Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium, Omar termed SC's reference to Pahalgam 'unfortunate' and asked: 'What kind of justice is it? Every time we are close to statehood, they will do something to sabotage it. Is this fair? Why are we being punished for a crime in which we had no role?' He pointed out that 'J&K's residents from Kathua to Kupwara' had protested the Pahalgam massacre of April 22 in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were gunned down. The CM announced a signature campaign across all 90 constituencies of J&K in the next eight weeks with the aim of submitting signatures to Supreme Court in support of restoring statehood and to take 'people's voice directly to Delhi'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Cost of a Virtual Dermatologist Consult Might Surprise You AskLayers Learn More Undo The top court on Thursday gave Centre eight weeks to respond to petitions seeking statehood. 'Me and my colleagues will use these eight weeks to go to each constituency,' Omar said. In his speech steeped in lament, the CM cited reports in various quarters about an 'announcement this Independence Day from Delhi' -- an allusion to restoration of statehood. 'I had hoped that in some corner of today's (PM Narendra Modi's) speech, there would be an announcement for J&K. We were told the papers are ready and it's only a matter of time. But nothing happened.' Expressing his anguish further, Omar said he wished no one became the CM of a Union Territory with an assembly -- like J&K --comparing the National Conference (NC) govt he leads to 'a horse asked to run with two front legs tied'. 'It has nothing except pain and anxieties. I have been chief minister of the state and now of the UT. The system of dual governance is not for success but for instilling defeat.' The Omar-led govt does not control key departments such as home, which is vested with Centre-appointed lieutenant-governor (LG) Manoj Sinha. Omar said he had never imagined before taking office that his cabinet's decisions 'could be altered or thrown into the dustbin', remarks seen as an allusion to the LG's overriding powers. 'I am accountable to the assembly and assembly members to the people. But the bureaucracy in the present system is not answerable to the elected representatives.'

It's only a matter of time before Trump blinks on tariff: Chris Wood

Christopher Wood suggests buying Indian equities despite US tariffs. He believes Trump will eventually reverse the tariffs. Wood highlights India's geopolitical importance and notes the unusual nature of the tariffs. He mentions India's underperformance in equities and links the second tariff tranche to India's Russian oil purchases. Wood also observes the US Federal Reserve's potential rate cut in September. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Mumbai: Jefferies' global head of equity strategy, Christopher Wood, said the Trump administration's imposing a 50% tariff on Indian imports is not a reason to sell Indian equities. Instead, it's a reason to buy them since "it is only a matter of time before Trump backs off the stance, which is not in America's interest.""It is worth noting that the track record makes it clear that it pays to stand up to the Donald," said Wood in his latest 'Greed & Fear' said the Trump administration's decision to impose an additional 25% tariff, taking the total levy to 50%, on Indian goods is "somewhat unusual" given India's relatively small trade surplus with the US and its "very important geopolitical relationship" with second tranche of 25% tariffs appeared linked to New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil."China has been buying much more oil from Russia but has not been sanctioned in the same way," he said. "The singling out of India in this fashion is not what most people would have predicted."According to Wood, Donald Trump has succeeded in bringing China, Russia, India, and Brazil together like never before."Indeed, BRICS as a grouping has been regalvanised."Wood said India's equities had recorded the biggest underperformance relative to other markets in 15 years in the 12 months to July. He attributed the weakness to "very high valuations" and "a heavy schedule of equity issuance."According to him, it is too late to cut India with valuations now back near the 10-year average 63% Price to Earnings (PE) ratio premium over emerging market said the slightly better-than-anticipated July inflation data has marginally lifted expectations of the US Federal Reserve easing. The base case remains for a rate cut by the American central bank in September and for the US dollar to remain in a downtrend."Still, for a data-dependent Fed not willing to project forward, which is more or less where the Powell-led Fed has been of late, there is still an argument to stay on hold since the reality is that reported inflation is still well above the 2% YoY target," he said the prime driver of the Trump administration's criticism of Jerome Powell is not concerns about the state of the economy, but rather to get the cost of debt servicing down.
