Venus Williams accepted a wild-card invitation to play singles at this month's DC Open, which would be the seven-time Grand Slam champion's first tournament in more than a year.
Williams, who turned 45 in June, is listed as 'inactive' on the WTA Tour's website.
She hasn't competed in an official match since the Miami Open in 2024.
'There's something truly special about D.C.: the energy, the fans, the history,' Williams said in a statement released Friday by organizers of the hard-court tournament, which begins with qualifying next weekend. 'This city has always shown me so much love, and I can't wait to compete there again.'
Williams also played in the nation's capital in 2022.
'She has inspired people around the world with her accomplishments on the court and her visionary impact off the court,' said Mark Ein, chairman of the Mubadala Citi DC Open. 'I know how much it means to our D.C. fans and community to be able to watch her compete in person this summer.'
In February, the tournament in Indian Wells, California, announced that Williams would be making her return to the tour by playing there, then later backtracked and said it turned out she wouldn't.
Williams' most recent Grand Slam appearances came in 2023, when she exited in the first round at Wimbledon — after slipping in the first set and hurting her right knee — and the U.S. Open.
Her five championships in singles at the All England Club came in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008 and she won the 2000 and 2001 U.S. Open singles trophies, too. She also won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her younger sister, Serena, whose last tournament was the 2022 U.S. Open, and a total of four Olympic gold medals.
The older Williams said in 2011 that she had been diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome, an energy-sapping auto-immune disease that can cause joint pain.

New York Jets make Sauce Gardner the NFL's highest-paid cornerback

The New York Jets are making Sauce Gardner the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. The Jets and Gardner agreed on a four-year, $120.4 million extension through the 2030 season, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the agreement had not been announced. Article content Gardner took to social media to report 'THE DEAL IS DONE' and thank his agents for making that happen. Article content 'This only the beginning,' Gardner posted. 'I appreciate the Jets organization for believing in me, my teammates for the blood, sweat (and) tears we put in.' Article content THE DEAL IS DONE📝 this only the beginning. my brother @allantegardner bts & @ajv got it done. I appreciate the Jets organization for believing in me, my teammates for the blood, sweat, & tears we put in, and JETS NATION... I appreciate y'all supporting me💚 Thank you GOD🥀 — SAUCE GARDNER (@iamSauceGardner) July 15, 2025 The contract paying the two-time All-Pro an average of $30.1 million a year comes a day after the Jets agreed to a lucrative extension with top wide receiver Garrett Wilson. That deal with Wilson is worth $130 million, as the organization locked up two foundational players for the long-term future. Article content Gardner, who turns 25 before Week 1, was the No. 4 pick in the 2022 draft out of Cincinnati. He established himself as one of the league's top cornerbacks during his first two professional seasons, including being selected the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. Article content After a down year by his standards, he is out to prove naysayers wrong, saying he has always felt like an underdog. Gardner opted to participate in mandatory minicamp rather than hold out to try to push for a new deal. Article content After recently declining to say whether he wanted to be the richest player at the position, Gardner now has that distinction. Article content 'Man, I just wanted to show my teammates, show the coaches how much I'm bought into this,' Gardner said. 'I want to win. I want to change the organization. I want to be a part of changing the organization.' Article content The Jets have the longest active playoff drought in the NFL, dating to a trip to the AFC championship game in the 2010 season. The organization hopes the new regime of general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn — himself a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback in his playing days — can lead a successful turnaround. MLB's 2027 work stoppage? Baseball folks already are talking about it

Article content Major League Baseball's all-star break is no longer a break, not for the people who run these clubs, anyway. Article content The draft, which is just about all-consuming for team executives, runs Sunday and Monday of all-star week. Article content Article content The trade deadline looms at the end of the month. When to rest? Article content 'Circle Dec. 2, 2026, on your calendar,' one exec said this month. 'If you have one of these jobs and you ever wanted to go to New Zealand or something, that's the time to go.' Article content It was a joke. But it's deadly serious for the sport. Article content On Dec. 1, 2026, the collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the players association expires. The expectation throughout the sport: The owners will lock out the players then. That means general managers not only can't be in touch with members of their own teams, they can't be in touch with representatives of free agents. No calls. No texts. No deals. No trades. No business. Article content New Zealand would be kind of a bucket-list trip, wouldn't it? Article content This isn't to put a damper on Monday night's Home Run Derby or Tuesday night's All-Star Game, both held on the outskirts of Atlanta. It's to acknowledge that the threat of a work stoppage is very real and the people who run baseball operations departments already are considering how it will impact the way they do business. As in: Do I really want to commit three years to a player if one of those years could be all but wiped out? Article content That's not a doomsday scenario. Those discussions are happening in front offices right now. The last lockout produced the CBA that covered the 2022-26 seasons. It delayed the start of the 2022 season but cost zero major league games. The next one? Article content Article content 'Maybe I'm wrong,' one head of a baseball operations department said. 'But this one feels like it's going to be long.' Article content Another exec said, 'The owners are loaded for bear this time.' Article content What MLB wants without saying it directly: a salary cap. The Los Angeles Dodgers are spending $341 million on players this year, the New York Mets $332 million, according to Spotrac. The Vegas-bound Athletics are spending $77.1 million, the Miami Marlins $67.6 million. Not coincidentally, the Dodgers and Mets enter the all-star break in playoff position. The A's and the Marlins do not. Article content 'We do not have the kind of cost certainty, predictability and competitive balance mechanisms in our player comp system that the three other major professional sports have,' Commissioner Rob Manfred said at an investor event hosted last month by the Atlanta Braves, according to Sports Business Journal. 'That's just a fact.' Article content Two words he doesn't use: 'salary' and 'cap.' But you don't have to read between the lines to understand what he's saying.

Vancouver Whitecaps head to Houston looking to regain their winning form

The Vancouver Whitecaps are looking to put their Major League Soccer season back on the rails. After enjoying one of the best starts in team history the Whitecaps have lost two MLS matches in a row and four of their last five. The Whitecaps (11-5-5) hope to get back on track Wednesday when they face the Houston Dynamo (7-10-5) in Texas. The 'Caps will then play their fourth game in 11 days when they battle San Diego FC Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium. The game in San Diego will be Vancouver's third consecutive road game after dropping a 3-0 decision to the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night. 'We know that we haven't really been as strong as when we started the season,' forward Daniel Rios said after training this week. 'It's part of every team. We don't panic. 'The way we approach these two (games) is try to get the most possible points. We'll do our best.' Back on May 24 the Whitecaps used a 3-2 road victory over Real Salt Lake to extend their unbeaten streak to 14 games across all competitions and nine matches in MLS play. At the time, Vancouver led the league with a 9-1-4 record for 31 points. Vancouver is 3-4-3 in the 10 MLS games since. The Whitecaps sit third in the Western Conference with 38 points, four back of conference leading San Diego, and have slid to eighth overall in the league standings. In their last four losses the Whitecaps have been outscored 13-4 and have given up three or more goals three times, including a 5-3 defeat by San Diego at BC Place Stadium on June 25. 'Colorado wasn't our best,' defender Tate Johnson said. 'We've got time to fix it. 'We know things have got to be better. We're looking forward to putting together two good games next week.' On a positive note, Vancouver used a goal in the 90th minute July 9 to beat Canadian Premier League side Valour FC 2-1 to win their Telus Canadian Champions quarterfinal. The Dynamo are 2-4 in their last six games and sit 10th in the Western Conference with 26 points. 'We know they're a great team,' said Johnson. 'We know they have a lot of threats, they're very well organized. 'We're going to have to make sure we're able to step up and put together a good performance.' Head coach Jesper Sorensen said his team doesn't need an overhaul, just some tinkering. 'We have to perform at a better level than we've done,' said Sorensen. 'It not just regarding structure and discipline. We have to be tougher and get into the game and start them better.' A question facing the Whitecaps is the status of Ecuadorean midfielder Pedro Vite. The team and Vite had agreed on a contract extension through the 2029 season. But Axel Schuster, Vancouver's chief executive officer and sporting director, said the deal included an agreement the team would take into consideration any offers for Vite from other clubs. It has been reported Mexican side Pumas UNAM have approached the Whitecaps about Vite, who is second on the team with four goals and leads with six assists. 'We have received an offer that we are at least considering,' said Schuster. 'We're focusing on the job that is ahead of us. We have a few days where we will go over this. 'It's a little bit unfortunate but it's also what the business is.' Pumas was one of the teams the Whitecaps beat on their journey to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final, which they lost to Cruz Azul 5-0. This report by Jim Morris, The Canadian Press, was first published July 15, 2025.
