According to a spokesperson for KZN VIP Protection Services, both minors were buried under the debris when the sand bank gave way.
'Our emergency medical teams arrived quickly and began intensive rescue efforts alongside other responding agencies,' said the spokesperson.
'One child was successfully rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Sadly, despite hours of relentless work, the second child was found with no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene.'
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
KZN VIP thanked all responders and community members who assisted during the operation.
'This is a deeply heartbreaking incident,' the spokesperson added.
'Our thoughts are with the families of the children and with our teams who worked under extremely traumatic circumstances.'
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.

Police probe more cases against syndicate that targeted Wits student Olorato Mongale
Olorato Mongale's mother Basetsana speaks during her funeral on Sunday. Image: Free State Provincial Government/Facebook Police have reported an increase in the number of cases that they are linked to the syndicate responsible for the death of the former Wits University student, Olorato Mongale - three more have been added to the 22 reported last week. Last week, the number of cases being investigated by the police stood at 22 cases with SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe indicating that the number has increased to 25. "We are now standing at 25 cases linked to the syndicate," Mathe said without going into details about the latest developments in the matter. Police said they are closing in on Bongani Mthimkulu, the remaining suspect of an alleged kidnapping syndicate that targeted young women at shopping malls in several provinces. The main suspect, Philangenkosi Makhanya, was killed during a shootout with police at Amanzimtoti in KwaZulu-Natal last week. Police arrested Ngubane but later said he was targeted by the syndicate and was an innocent victim of identity fraud. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kananda announced her withdrawal from supporting Ngubane's addiction rehabilitation journey after having supported the campaign aimed at helping him overcome his drug addiction. 'I would like to take a moment to express my appreciation for the outpouring of support regarding the call to help Fezile Ngubane with his rehabilitation. Our initial intention was to assist in placing Fezile at a free rehabilitation centre, as we believe that simply throwing money at someone struggling with addiction is not a sustainable solution. "However, with the introduction of monetary donations into this situation, I have decided to withdraw my engagement in Fezile's case. I believe it is best to those who have taken a different approach to carry on from here," she said.

Central police host GBV awareness campaign
The Pretoria Central SAPS and the Department of Labour held an awareness event on May 29 aimed at discussing gender-based violence (GBV) after the release of the fourth quarter crime statistics. Crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/25 financial year have indicated decreases in contact crimes for Pretoria Central, though the area remains a crime hotspot due to elevated incidents of serious crimes. In Pretoria Central, GBV-related crimes such as rape decreased by two counts (21 cases reported last year down to 19), and sexual offences decreased by four counts (6 to 2). One contact sexual offence was reported compared to none in the previous two quarters. The Central SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit visited department employees at their offices on Francis Baard Street to talk about GBV and issues of femicide. The station's spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise, accompanied by social crime prevention officer Warrant Officer Queen Mahlangu, provided the statistics and the implementation of strategies by the SAPS to assist victims when reporting such crimes. Other speakers took to the podium to educate the employees on different kinds of abuse and other related crimes. Attendees could raise their views and also engage in a debate. Pamphlets with information and contact details were handed out to the attendees. Station commander Brigadier Gibin Mashaba expressed his gratefulness to the department for engaging with employees, saying continued dialogues such as these are needed to break the social stigmas against GBV. 'We want to urge more departments within the inner city to partake in addressing social ills and a continuous effort to reach out to their employees. The only way to illuminate GBV is to instil a culture of whistleblowing by the community to protect victims and provide them with shelter and any psychological assistance,' Mashaba said.
