Three dead, including gunman, in Kentucky shootings at church and airport

NBC News14-07-2025
Three people are dead, including the gunman, in a pair of shootings Sunday at Kentucky's Blue Grass Airport and at a storied Lexington church across town, authorities said.
The unidentified shooter struck a Kentucky State Police trooper on a terminal road at Blue Grass Airport at 11:36 a.m., Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said. The trooper had pulled the gunman over after having received a license plate reader alert in the area.
'The trooper was shot and the suspect fled,' Weathers said, adding that the trooper was stabilized and receiving treatment.
Law enforcement caught up with the shooter at Richmond Road Baptist Church, about 16 miles to the southeast, where he also opened fire, Weathers said.
Officers fatally shot the gunman, he said, but not before at least four people at the church were struck, two fatally.
'Preliminary information indicates that the suspect may have had a connection to the individuals at the church,' Weathers said. 'Four individuals were shot on church property.'
Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn identified the two women pronounced dead at the scene as Beverly Gumm, 72, and Christina Combs, 32. Social media and public records indicate Gumm was Combs' mother and was married to the church's pastor.
Of the two male victims shot at the church, one is in critical condition, while the other was stabilized, Weathers said.
Ginn said he had not yet notified the gunman's family of his death so he cannot yet release his identity, which he said is known to police.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear addressed the series of shootings in a post on X.
'Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let's give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police,' Beshear wrote. 'Details are still emerging, and we will share more information as available.'
The Lexington Fire Department said it responded to a shooting at the airport at 11:39 a.m. and transported one person with 'serious injuries' to the hospital, according to NBC affiliate WLEX of Lexington.
Blue Grass Airport confirmed in a statement that an 'incident' occurred on airport property. The airport said that it temporarily closed a roadway and a terminal as a precaution but that they were later reopened.
Weathers emphasized the shooting was not related to the airport.
He said state troopers, along with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, were assisting Lexington detectives with the investigation.
He had nothing on a possible motive but noted that the church is home to a tight-knit group of worshippers.
State Attorney General Russell Coleman thanked first responders in a statement and said he was praying for the families. His office was also ready to assist the agencies involved, he added.
'This is another reminder of the grave danger we ask law enforcement to face every single day,' Coleman said.
CORRECTION (July 13, 2025, 6:57 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article misidentified the Fayette County coroner. He is Gary Ginn, not Bob Baker.

Exclusive: New York gunman was flagged by security camera system before attack, sources say

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK, July 29 (Reuters) - Cameras at 345 Park Avenue flagged an approaching gunman on Monday as a potential threat that required immediate attention, seconds before he burst into the office skyscraper's lobby and began firing, according to two former federal officials familiar with New York building security systems. A still frame of CCTV footage obtained by Reuters and timestamped 6:26:52 p.m. ET – just over a minute before police received the first emergency call about the mass shooting - shows a man holding an assault-style rifle at his side. A computer-generated bright yellow box around him in the image indicates the use of software that analyzes live video feeds for threats requiring instant action, the former federal officials said. The details about the system, which have not previously been reported, raise questions about whether the gunman could have been thwarted before his attack, the officials said. Rudin Management, the real estate company that owns the tower, declined to comment on the camera system and whether it prompted any immediate actions from security staff. Police have identified the shooter as Shane Tamura, 27, a Las Vegas resident with a history of mental illness. He killed two security officers, including a police officer working on a paid security detail, a Rudin employee and an investment firm executive before taking his own life. The yellow box surrounding the shooter as he walked toward the entrance was meant to alert guards at the front security desk, the former officials said. Michael Dorn, executive director of Safe Havens International, which advises schools on how to protect themselves from active shooters, said that even with such a video system in place, the threat still needs to be relayed to the building's occupants immediately by the security staff. "You can't automate this away," said Dorn, a former anti-terrorism adviser to the Georgia Department of Homeland Security and an expert on mass casualty events. Experts said some systems allow security guards to initiate an immediate lockdown of external doors, elevators and other access points. Matthew Dumpert, global leader of enterprise security risk management at financial and risk advisory firm Kroll, said the attack - the city's deadliest mass shooting in decades - prompted clients to call with questions about how to protect themselves from similar attacks. The reaction is reminiscent of the aftermath of the killing in December of United Healthcare executive Brian Thompson in Manhattan, when several companies enhanced executive protection in response. "It takes significant resources, alarms to notify people, training to recognize it, physical security elements like locks to lock down facilities and prevent somebody from having free flow access through a facility," Dumpert said. Glen Kucera, president of Allied Universal, a global security firm, also was fielding calls from clients on Tuesday. "The only way to have avoided this was to keep the shooter outside, which is very difficult," Kucera said, adding it was clear the gunman intended to cause harm and not survive the encounter, which made him the most difficult kind of the threat to stop. The security systems at 345 Park Avenue were typical of high-end offices in New York, according to Dave Komendat, senior security advisor at the risk mitigation firm International SOS. While the lobby is open to the public, as in most buildings, visitors check in at security desks to access the elevators, which are behind turnstiles. Rudin's offices, where the gunman killed himself, has bathrooms that doubled as bulletproof safe rooms, likely saving lives, Mayor Eric Adams said. Numerous companies have implemented enhanced security for the rest of the week following the shooting, including additional guards, according to the Partnership for New York City, which represents more than 300 banks, investment firms and other companies in the city.

Dog the Bounty Hunter's stepson bragged about shooting rifle with son before horror death

Dog the Bounty Hunter's stepson Gregory Zecca and his son Anthony were seen enjoying a shooting range years before the accidental shooting fatality at the weekend The stepson of Dog the Bounty Hunter had bragged about shooting guns with his son years before his tragic accidental death. Gregory Zecca, who is passionate about his love of guns, seemingly passed down his feelings to his son Anthony. Sadly, an accident over the weekend saw Zecca's 13-year-old son shot and killed. The tragedy is said to have occurred in their apartment in Florida on Saturday. Now, their love of guns has been made apparent in a number of past social media post. In 2021, footage showed the 38-year-old bounty hunter showing his child, who was nine at the time, how to use a rifle. The images were taken at Franktown Firearms Shooting Center in Franktown, Colorado. In the Instagram post, which has its comments disabled, Zecca said: "Getting some range time in with our buddies @franktownfirearms." Anthony is seen in the posts smiling as he takes aim at the targets. In another image, Zecca and his son both smile for the camera as they wear their protective ear muff and goggles while holding the firearms. Following the tragic fatality, Dog - whose real name is Duane Chapman - and his partner Francie, released a statement to TMZ through a representative. It read: "We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony." Gregory, who is Francie's child from a previous marriage, became part of Dog's life when he married Francie in 2021. The couple found solace in each other following the deaths of their respective spouses. Gregory is also part of Dog's bounty hunting crew, working alongside Dog and his daughter, Lyssa. In 2020, Francie told ET of their connection: "We understood the pain that the other one was feeling, and [in] those tough days and moments, we helped each other stand up. "We could cry with each other and talk about what we were feeling. We were able to walk alongside each other through the pain and heartbreak, and it brought us together in this amazing way." In 2023, Dog also told his followers of his secret son. The revelation came on the fourth anniversary of his late wife Beth's passing. At the time, he introduced his adult son to the world through a social media post. The image showed a well-built man dressed in a blue polo shirt and smart jeans, complete with sunglasses reminiscent of those his father famously wears. Dog explained the tale behind his secret son would be revealed in his memoir titled Nine Lives and Counting. The reality TV star is best known for catching criminals in the US, in particular Hawaii.

Three arrested after 'loving' father stabbed to death outside casino

Three men have been arrested after a father was stabbed to death in what police believe is a 'targeted attack' outside a luxury casino in central London. Blue Stevens, 24, died after he was attacked in Seville Street, Knightsbridge, at around 9.30pm on July 9. Two men were arrested in Hounslow on Saturday. One man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and remains in custody, while another man was arrested on suspicion of murder and has been bailed. Following their arrests, officers obtained a warrant to search two properties in Chiswick where significant evidence was recovered, the Met said. A third man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in custody. The incident took place near The Park Tower Knightsbridge hotel and restaurant Nusr-Et, run by Turkish chef Nusret Gokce, aka 'Salt Bae'. Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah said: 'These arrests mark a significant milestone in this complex and unfolding murder investigation. We continue to progress at pace. 'While we retain an open mind around motive, one line of inquiry is now that this may have been a targeted attack.' His partner, who was with Blue when he was attacked, wrote in a card nestled amongst the growing floral tributes: 'To My Blue. 'We are all absolutely devastated without you. 'You took a piece of my heart with you. A part of me has gone with you. I love you more than absolutely anyone in this world. 'My boy forever and always.' A cousin told Metro: 'He had two lovely kids and was a loving father he lived for his children. 'He was such a nice person, a real good person.' The Park Tower Casino was first built in 1973 and refurbished in 2002. It features a five-star, 251-room hotel with a casino on the ground floor. Its premium location in Knightsbridge is just around the corner from Hyde Park and close to Harrods and Harvey Nichols, with its rooms offering views of the iconic London skyline. Police are calling on anyone who saw the attack or has any information to get in touch.
