An analysis of burglary cases over the past five years reveals a concerning trend in Panchkula: only about 36% of all reported burglary cases between 2021 and April 2025 were solved by the district police. Between 2021 and April 2025, a total of 1,044 burglary cases were reported in Panchkula. Of these, only 370 cases were worked out, indicating a five-year case resolution rate of 35.4%.
In 2021, 208 burglary cases were reported, with 84 solved, marking a resolution rate of approximately 40.4%.
The following year, 285 cases were lodged, with 114 worked out — a 40% resolution rate. In 2023, the rate dipped slightly, with 90 of 278 cases solved (32.4%). The downward trend continued in 2024, with just 71 of 194 cases cracked (36.6%). The current year appears even more troubling: from Jan 1 to April 30, only 11 out of 79 cases — just 13.9% — were solved.
The figures were provided under the Right to Information (RTI) act.
The consistent failure to solve a majority of these cases means stolen valuables — often including cash, jewellery, electronics, and important documents — are rarely recovered, leaving victims without justice or restitution. Residents and local activists have expressed frustration, citing a lack of police presence, surveillance, and investigative follow-up.
"With crime trends showing no signs of slowing, we urge authorities to priorities property crime investigations and strengthen neighbourhood policing to improve both resolution rates and public confidence in law enforcement.

Besides, the police need to increase patrolling and presence to instill fear in the minds of criminals. The recent cases in which thieves dared to enter houses even when the family was in is shocking for all," said SK Nayar, president, Citizens' Welfare Association, Panchkula.
A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, admitted that staff shortages and lack of forensic resources hamper investigations.
When contacted, ACP Arvind Kamboj (crime branch) told TOI, "I do not have the said data with me right now, but we are doing recoveries and solving cases in many burglaries. Not just at police station level, even crime branch level teams are formed and cases are solved."

Karjat Riverbed Mining Under Scrutiny After Complaints of Illegal Blasting
Navi Mumbai: In response to complaints and a TOI report about the illegal blasting of riverbanks and hillsides in Karjat taluka, the Raigad district administration has assured that authorities will prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Following a TOI report on May 12 this year, environmental watchdog NatConnect Foundation wrote to the Chief Minister regarding a series of illegal uses of explosives, including crude bombs and gelatine sticks, in rural areas of Karjat taluka for extracting earth and rocks from riverbanks and hillsides. Local residents stated that a complaint against illegal quarrying in the Bhaktawadi and Shingdol-Ambivali areas by a resident led to retaliatory actions. NatConnect Director B N Kumar informed the Chief Minister, citing a media report. Quarry operators detonated two bombs near the complainant's residence, shaking windows. Environmentalists warned that such illegal activities could also damage biodiversity. "The Chief Minister's office referred the issue to the Raigad collector, and NatConnect followed up seeking information via the Right To Action (RTI) Act route on actions taken on the Chief Minister's mail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Malaysians don't know about this! iOS Credit Read More Undo The collector's office instructed the Karjat tahsildar to investigate. According to a local activist, members of two local communities are primarily responsible for using explosives and heavy machinery to extract stones and rocks from these areas. Illegal activities have resulted in the felling of mature trees to create access paths for JCBs to reach riverbanks for unlawful soil excavation. Residents say the continuous blasts have adversely impacted the water level and quality in the river. The complaints say that water flows into the holes created by the blasts. It is also environmentally unsound to keep blasting the riverbanks' bottoms, said an activist. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). No fuel for motorists without helmets in JSR
1 2 Jamshedpur: The East Singhbhum district administration on Wednesday reinforced its 'no helmet no fuel, no seat belt no fuel' norm as part of its move to curb road accidents by effective implementation of traffic safety rules. For one week, officials will run awareness campaigns among motorists about the need to use helmets or seat belts while driving bikes and cars. Crackdown will begin thereafter, said officials. "We have asked the petrol bunk owners to install CCTVs at their respective premises so that the video footage of any motorist who comes violating the safety norms is recorded, and penal action will be taken accordingly," DSP (Traffic) Sriniraj Kumar said. Enforcement officials, including transport and traffic officials, held a meeting with pump owners on Tuesday wherein nitty-gritty of the exercise was discussed in detail. Pump owners were told to put up banners, posters, signages, and stickers at fuel stations so that motorists coming to the station became aware of the norm. Traffic police data showed 21 people were killed and 17 were injured in 46 road accidents which occurred between June and July this year. The police collected Rs 41 lakh in penalties from motorists for violating traffic rules, including not wearing a helmet and not putting on a seat belt, during this period.
