Bank credit growth slows, deposits stay steady in FY26

Bank credit rose 1.4% in FY26 so far as against 2.3% a year ago, while deposits growth remained steady - at 3.4% against 3.5% in the same period. On a year-on-year basis, deposits rose 10.2% while advances climbed 10% in the fortnight ending July 25, showed the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) latest weekly statistical survey. The flow of non-food bank credit during the financial year 2024-25 reduced by about ₹3.4 lakh crore to almost ₹18 lakh crore, while the flow from non-bank sources more than made up for this decrease, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra highlighted during his monetary policy statement. Live Events Within the retail segment, housing loan demand has not seen traction as expected by many industry leaders. "We did expect higher demand after a cumulative 100 basis points rate cut. But there is no surge in demand despite rate cuts. Many borrowers are perhaps waiting for the rate cut cycle to be completed to get the full benefit of it," LIC Housing Finance managing director Tribhuwan Adhikari said last week. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, however, on Thursday said that housing loan growth at 14% was quite reasonable, given the fact that taking a housing loan is a long-term investment. Even though the growth rate of bank credit slowed last year, the overall flow of financial resources to the commercial sector increased to ₹34.8 lakh crore in 2024-25 from ₹33.9 lakh crore in 2023-24. Top bank executives exuded confidence of a higher credit growth going forward which will be supported by retail growth from the second quarter onwards with the onset of festive demand. However, banks are facing a challenge in raising deposits. Although, in the first five months deposit growth outpaced credit growth. With deposit rates falling in sync with the central bank's softer monetary policy, savers are looking for alternative investment options to maximise return. This has raised the challenge for banks in mobilising deposits. Bankers said they are trying to offer value added services with liability products to retain customers.

Raj farmers demand suspension of crop insurance premium deductions

1 2 Jaipur: Farmer unions in Rajasthan have demanded that the govt immediately stop deducting premiums under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), citing widespread Kharif crop damage due to excessive monsoon rains. They said the sowing period for crops such as moong, millet, urad, soybean, sorghum, maize, peanuts, guar, moth, chola, and sesame has ended, leaving no scope for recovery. "Compensation under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana can only be provided based on crop cutting. Despite this, the govt is collecting premiums from farmers' bank accounts for insurance companies. When it is not possible to provide insurance to farmers, the govt should immediately halt the deduction of premiums," said Kisan Mahapanchayat national president Rampal Jat. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jat also raised concerns over the forced sale of Nano Urea. Citing research by Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, he claimed its use led to reduced yield. "Farmers do not wish to purchase Nano Urea bottles. However, cooperative societies and licensees are forcing farmers to buy it to get regular urea," he wrote. Jat said multiple memorandums to the state and central govts have gone unanswered. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like People Aged 50 to 80 Could Be Eligible For This British Seniors Learn More Undo A complaint to the Competition Commission of India on Oct 12, 2022 also drew no action. "Even though the rule of law exists, farmers are continuously being compelled to purchase Nano Urea unlawfully. Govt circulars to stop this compulsion have had no effect. Farmers' homes are piling up with Nano Urea bottles, causing unnecessary expenses and worsening their financial situation after crop losses," he added. A 50 million pound ($67 million) revamp of the club's Carrington training base has been completed in time for the start of the new Premier League season as the storied club aims to bounce back from its worst campaign in the modern era. 'The big thing that I like the most is now there's going to be no excuses,' defender Diogo Dalot said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD United has gone 12 years since last winning the Premier League title in 2013 and last season recorded its lowest finish when placing 15th. It also suffered a club record 18 losses in the and amassed its lowest points total, 42, as it failed to qualify for any European competition. More from Football 'It's what we're going to do on the pitch that obviously will determine what we do and where we put the club back on top,' Dalot said. But he added that the new training center meant players had 'everything that you need to be on your best shape mentally and physically.' State-of-the-art performance and rehabilitation equipment has been installed, including altitude training facilities. Sleeping pods, oxygen chambers and cryotherapy treatment facilities are to be added imminently. The project was funded by minority owner Jim Ratcliffe as part of the British billionaire's $1.3 billion investment in the storied club last year. 'I hope it helps take Manchester United where Manchester United needs to go,' he said. Ratcliffe, who has also outlined plans to rebuild the club's iconic Old Trafford stadium, said he had quickly made a decision to 'invest significantly in the creation of a world class performance environment for staff and players to reflect our ambition and vision for Manchester United.' 'The club has to compete at the highest level. That's appropriate to the brand and the size and the history of the club,' he said. 'So whilst a world class training facility won't take us to that place alone, it is one of the key ingredients in the modern world.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As well as performance equipment, the redesign of the campus, led by architect Foster + Partners, includes facilities like a barber shop, a Formula 1 simulator and pool table, with a padel court due to be installed at the request of players.
