Former ENG Cricketer Asked Wife to 'Help End His Life' After Losing Coaching Job
Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe, aged 55, tragically passed away in August last year after being struck by a train at Esher railway station. An inquest at Surrey coroner's court revealed that his death followed a prolonged period of mental health struggles. His widow, Amanda Thorpe, revealed that the former batsman had expressed thoughts of ending his life and even asked her to assist him in travelling to Switzerland for assisted dying.
'The weeks leading up to his death, he told me he doesn't want to be here any more," she was quoted as saying by The Times.
'He asked me to help him end his life. He said he wants to go to Switzerland," she added.
Thorpe's mental health significantly deteriorated after losing his role as England's batting coach in 2022. His dismissal followed a controversial video during the Ashes tour in Australia, showing him smoking a cigar indoors, which violated local laws. Amanda Thorpe stated that the incident marked a turning point in his life.
'He came back from the tour of Australia in a terrible state," she shared.
'To be sacked after that — I think it was foreseeable that it would be really really hard on him. If he hadn't been on that Tour, then he wouldn't be dismissed and that was ultimately what he couldn't deal with," Mrs Thorpe added.
'He tried to do it but he was spiralling down. He signed a contract and I had to tell them he was too unwell to do that job," she said.
By June 2024, his condition worsened—he stopped eating, withdrew from loved ones, and became deeply isolated. She described him as being in 'real crisis and despair."
On the day of his death, Amanda noticed that Graham had left the house without their dog, which was unusual. She later received a heartbreaking message from his father, Geoff Thorpe, that simply read, 'He's gone."
Graham Thorpe had a distinguished international cricket career, playing 182 matches for England and scoring 16 Test centuries. He was respected for his resilience and skill on the field. In his honour, a tribute will be paid during the fifth Test between England and India at The Oval on August 1, what would have been his 56th birthday.

ENG vs IND 4th Test: IND bowlers helpless as Root-Pope dominate 1st session
It was all England in the morning session of Day 3 action of the 4th Test of 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England in Manchester, as the hosts played a brilliant wicketless session to take their total from the overnight score of 225 for 2 to 332 for 2. The hosts are now only 26 runs away from India's first innings total of 358. Indian bowlers started the day in aggressive fashion but soon lost their morale and rhythm, which the English duo of Pope and Root took full advantage of. The first session of the day began with England resuming their innings at the overnight score of 225 for 2, with Joe Root (11 not out) and Ollie Pope (20 not out) at the crease. The duo took a cautious start to the day and kept playing sensible cricket to take their partnership for the third wicket past 50, keeping England rolling. India had two good wicket chances — one when Pope edged a ball to short cover, but it fell in no man's land, and the second when, in a rare scenario, Jadeja fumbled a throw and missed a chance to run out Root on the final ball of the 54th over. Just before the first drinks break of the day, Root took his total to 31 to become the third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket history, surpassing Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis. The Englishmen continued to attack post drinks as well. Ollie Pope, in the 64th over, completed his 16th Test half-century to make it three out of three 50-plus scores by England's top three in the innings, before Root made it four out of four in the 69th over. By the time the session ended, Joe Root (58 not out) and Ollie Pope (66 not out) had added 107 runs to the hosts' overnight total to complete a dominant session. Joe Root Closes Gap With Sachin Tendulkar, Becomes 2nd Player In The World To...
Last Updated: Root has 104 50+ scores to his credit in Test cricket now. Only Sachin Tendulkar (119) has scored more 50+ scores in Tests than him. Joe Root is the world No. 1 Test batter, and on Friday (July 25), during the first session of the third day's play of the ongoing fourth India-England Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, he completed his 67th Test half-century. The half-century by Root on Friday morning also took his tally of 50+ scores in Test cricket to 104 now. Only Sachin Tendulkar of India has scored more 50+ scores in the five-day format of the game than Root. The ongoing match in Manchester is Root's 157th Test for England. Root has 37 centuries and 67 half-centuries to his credit in Test cricket. Tendulkar played 200 Tests for India from 1989 to 2013 and crossed the 50-run mark 119 times. He scored 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries. Most 50+ scores in Tests If Root, who is the third leading run getter in Test cricket, manages to convert his fifty into a century in the first innings, then he will break Steve Smith's record and become the first player in the world to score 12 Test centuries against India. Root also needs to score at least 120 runs in the ongoing match to break Ricky Ponting's record of 13,378 runs and become the second leading run getter in Test cricket. Ponting played 168 Tests for Australia from 1995 to 2012 and amassed a total of 13,378 runs. The overall record of scoring the most runs in Tests is in the name of Tendulkar. Tendulkar played 200 matches and scored 15,921 runs for India. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. No Babar Azam But Shaheen Afridi Called Back To Pakistan T20I Squad
Last Updated: Pakistan recalls Shaheen Shah Afridi for the T20I series in the West Indies, while Babar Azam is ignored. Mohammad Rizwan remains ODI captain. Pakistan has recalled fast bowler and former captain Shaheen Shah Afridi for the upcoming T20I series in the West Indies, while ignoring Babar Azam again. Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf, who missed the recent series in Bangladesh, will join Afridi in making a comeback to the team. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan has been retained as the captain of the ODI side, despite the team's group-stage exit in the 2025 Champions Trophy under him. Babar also continues in ODIs. Pakistan and the West Indies will play three T20Is and three ODIs in the Caribbean. The T20s are scheduled from July 31 to August 3 in Florida, followed by the ODIs between August 8 and 12 in Trinidad. Three young pacers — Abbas Afridi, Ahmed Daniyal and Salman Mirza — who played in the T20 series in Bangladesh, which ended on Thursday, have not been picked for the West Indies tour. Pakistan T20 squad: Salman Ali Agha (capt), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Muhammad Haris, Muhammad Nawaz, Sahabzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sufyan Muqim. Meanwhile, new coach Mike Hesson recently gave a lowdown of his stint so far, which has seen them having whitewashed Bangladesh at home in June, followed by losing the reverse three-match series 1-2. 'First 6 games on two contrasting pitches gave us key insights. A young batting group shone with 200+ scores early. Mirpur which is the lowest scoring venue in T20I's certainly tested our adaptability and after struggling early we fought back and showed an ability to learn with experience," Hesson posted on X (formerly Twitter). 'New players stepped up, showing promise and in some instances excelling. Specialist Coaches have played a key role in developing bowlers both here and at the NCA. Fielding was a huge step up in last two matches and were starting to look like an International fielding side," Hesson added. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 17:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
