Rahul Gandhi Bihar Yatra Live: Lalu Yadav, Tejashwi arrive in Sasaram to join yatra
"Rahul Gandhi is starting a major campaign today, and the Election Commission's press conference is happening in this context, as they are admitting that the voter list is wrong. If the voter list is wrong, then it is their job to fix it," Shrinate said while speaking to news agency ANI.
Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary on Sunday downplayed Rahul Gandhi's "Voter Adhikar Yatra" against the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Choudhary sarcastically thanked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saying, "At least thanks to Nitish Kumar, Rahul Gandhi can hold his yatra on good roads. There's nothing extraordinary about it".
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav arrived in Sasaram to join the inaugural program of the "Voter Adhikar Yatra" in the poll-bound state.
Earlier in the day, Lalu Yadav departed from Patna to Sasaram by helicopter, accompanied by RJD leader and his son Tejashwi Yadav, to kick off the campaign aimed at defending citizens' right to vote ahead of the state assembly elections.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday said the Opposition will fight with full determination to safeguard citizens' right to vote, calling it the cornerstone of democracy.
"What bigger irony can there be in a democracy than people being denied the freedom to vote and choose their government?" Yadav asked. He assured voters that the Mahagathbandhan would stand firmly with them in this battle.
"लोकतंत्र में इस से बड़ी विडंबना क्या होगी कि लोगों से उनके वोट डालने की और सरकार चुनने की आजादी छिनी जा रही है। हम आप सभी को आश्वस्त करते हैं कि आपकी वोट डालने की लड़ाई शिद्दत के साथ लड़ेंगे।

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday backed Rahul Gandhi's "Voter Adhikar Yatra" in Bihar, calling it a fight to protect democracy and the right to vote. Yadav accused the BJP of "misusing constitutional institutions" and said Bihar, the land often called the cradle of democracy, will not remain silent. "We will fight for the people. We will not allow anyone to snatch away the right to vote," he said.
Congress has claimed that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) had actually "exposed" the designs of the BJP to disenfranchise lakhs of voters belonging to the Dalit, Adivasi and minority communities, poor people and daily wagers. The grand old party has also alleged that the Election Commission is becoming like one of the 'compartments' of the BJP.

Rahul Gandhi kicks off ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra'
Patna/New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched the party's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar, a 16-day march covering more than 1,300 km across over 20 districts. The campaign, aimed at protesting Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and what the Congress calls 'vote chori,' began from Sasaram and will culminate with a rally in Patna on 1 September. The yatra began from Bihar's Sasaram, with several leaders such as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawan Khera, Kanhaiya Kumar and senior RJD leaders, including Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, joining Gandhi for the launch. Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, wrote: '16 days, 20+ districts, 1,300+ km. We are coming among the people with the Voter Adhikar Yatra. This is a fight to protect the most basic democratic right – 'one person, one vote'. Join us in Bihar to save the Constitution.' The route will take Gandhi through Aurangabad, Gaya, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Munger, Bhagalpur, Purnea, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Champaran, Siwan, Chapra and Arrah, before concluding in Patna. During the event, the Congress MP vowed to expose 'vote chori' and added that the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar was a 'conspiracy' by the Election Commission. The entire country knows what the Election Commission is doing. Earlier, the country did not know how votes were being stolen. But we made it clear in the press conference how votes are being stolen. Whenever the theft is happening, whether in Bihar, Maharashtra, Assam, Bengal, we will catch the theft and working to show it to the people," said Gandhi. "I am telling you from this stage that Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections are being stolen in the entire country. Their latest conspiracy is to conduct SIR in Bihar and steal the Bihar elections as well by cutting the new votes and adding fake ones. All of us have come to this stage to tell you that we will not let them steal this election," he said.

CEC junks ‘vote chori' charges
New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday adopted a self-righteous tone, dismissing 'vote chori' allegations by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in its first press conference since Bihar's controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR), stating that they are standing like a rock behind the voters. 'Either give an affidavit under oath or apologise to the nation. If the affidavit is not received within 7 days, it means that all these allegations are baseless,' Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said in response to allegations made by Rahul Gandhi. The CEC stated that the EC takes every possible step to safeguard the voting rights of every citizen in the country, and a deliberate attempt is being made to discredit them. The Commission's press meet comes 10 days after the Opposition leader in a press conference accused the ECI of facilitating widespread electoral malpractice. Rahul Gandi alleged that over one lakh fake votes were registered to aid in BJP's victory in Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 Parliament elections. He had also accused the election body of attempting to steal Bihar's Assembly elections. Following his press conference, the ECI had accused the Congress leader of using 'dirty phrases' against them. 'The EC is not scared of such allegations, and neither are the voters. I want to make it clear that the EC will without bias stand like a rock with women, poor, young, voters of the country,' he said, adding that the allegations are tantamount to insulting the Constitution. On questions regarding allegations of undue haste in SIR, the ECI said they are misleading. "The law says that such revisions are to be done before the polls," the CEC said. "In Bihar, in 2003 an SIR was done. It was done successfully then, it would be done successfully now," he added. When asked about voter irregularities in Kerala and Karnataka, the CEC said, 'If no candidate had a problem even up till 45 days after the election concluded, then it is clear to all voters what the intent is.' Gyanesh Kumar also said that unlike the special summary revision, the SIR is an attempt to purify the rolls by giving to each voter an enumeration form. Responding to a question on why the ECI is determining eligibility, Gyanesh Kumar said that it was being done to ensure that the Article 326 of the Constitution is not violated.

‘Felt like it skid on runway': Cong MP's experience on Air India flight aborted before take-off in Kochi
Congress MP Hibi Eden, who was travelling on an Air India flight from Kochi to Delhi, recounted his experience after the take-off was aborted due to a technical problem. He said he felt 'something unusual' and that 'it just felt like the flight skid on the runway'. Air India said flight AI 504, scheduled to depart Cochin International Airport at 10:40 pm, faced a technical issue during its take-off roll.(REUTERS file) The airline later confirmed on Sunday night that flight AI 504, scheduled to depart Cochin International Airport at 10:40 pm, encountered a technical issue during its take-off roll. 'Something unusual with this flight ✈️ AI 504, it just felt like the flight skid on the runway and hasn't taken off yet. Air India cancelled AI 504 and announced a new flight at 1 am which hasn't still started boarding, today is the third flight which has been AOG,' Eden posted on X. He also shared a photograph on Facebook from inside the aircraft, noting that the take-off had been aborted midway. 'The cockpit crew decided to discontinue the take-off run, following Standard Operating Procedures and brought the aircraft back to bay for maintenance checks,' an Air India spokesperson explained. According to the airline, a replacement aircraft was being arranged to operate the flight, which would depart at a later time. 'All passengers have disembarked and our ground colleagues in Kochi are extending support to them. The inconvenience caused to the passengers due to this unforeseen situation is sincerely regretted. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew remain our top priority,' the airline added. Congress MP KC Venugopal's 'near-miss runway tragedy' claim Hibi Eden's Air India flight experience comes just days after Congress MP KC Venugopal wrote to the Union Civil Aviation Minister, seeking a probe into alleged safety lapses on the Trivandrum-Delhi Air India flight of August 8, on which he and other MPs were passengers. In his letter, shared by ANI, Venugopal reiterated his runway scare claim, stating that the pilot aborted landing at Chennai airport when the aircraft was 'only 30-40 feet' above the ground. Venugopal said the flight, callsign AI 2455, encountered turbulence shortly after departing from Thiruvananthapuram. According to the aircraft left at around 8 pm and landed in Chennai at around 10.35 pm on Sunday. Posting on X shortly after 12 am on Monday, the Congress MP said the flight, carrying several fellow MPs, came 'frighteningly close to tragedy' and was saved by 'skill and luck' following the captain's 'quick decision'. Air India on August 11 rejected Venugopal's claim that the Thiruvananthapuram-Delhi flight AI 2455 experienced a 'heart-stopping' incident because another plane was on the same runway when it attempted to land at Chennai airport, where it had been diverted. The airline clarified that during the first landing attempt, ATC instructed the pilots to perform a go-around after another aircraft departing the same runway reported suspected foreign object debris (FOD) on it. Referring to the June 12 Air India crash, Venugopal described the incident as 'deeply concerning,' adding that it 'raises serious questions about passenger safety protocols, operational decision-making, and the airline's approach to transparency.'
