Ludhiana authorities ban drone operations, citing potential threats to public safety
Ludhiana (Punjab) [India], May 9 (ANI): Amid the India-Pakistan tension, authorities in Ludhiana have imposed a ban on the operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), including drones, across the district, citing potential threats to public safety, security, and law and order.
An order issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner - Cum -District Magistrate, Ludhiana on Friday, read, 'It has been brought to the notice of the undersigned that the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, in the jurisdiction of district Ludhiana, poses a potential threat to public safety, security, and law and order. There is credible information that certain anti-social elements or miscreants may misuse such UAVs for surveillance, smuggling, photography of sensitive installations, or other activities prejudicial to public peace and tranquility.'
The directive, issued by District Magistrate Himanshu Jain, comes in response to credible intelligence indicating that anti-social elements may misuse drones for surveillance, smuggling, or photographing sensitive installations.
'It is necessary to take immediate preventive measures to ensure public safety and maintain peace in the district. Therefore, I, Himanshu Jain, IAS, District Magistrate Ludhiana, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by virtue of Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, hereby prohibits: Flying, operating, or use of any kind of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), including drones, of any size or specification, is strictly prohibited in the entire jurisdiction of district ludhiana, with immediate effect. This restriction shall remain in force till further orders,' the order read.
However, exemptions are given for drones operated for official duties by law enforcement agencies, armed forces, and other government bodies.
Additionally, individuals can operate drones by obtaining prior written permission from the District Magistrate or any authorised officer.
'The following categories are exempted from this restriction: Drones operated by law enforcement agencies, armed forces, or any other government agencies, for official duties. Drones used with prior written permission from the District Magistrate or any officer authorised by the District Administration. Any person violating this order shall be liable for penal action under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and other applicable laws,' the order read.
Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan after the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of Wednesday (May 7th), targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK).
This operation was a retaliatory response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, including one Nepali national.
Operation Sindoor is one of the deepest strikes carried out by India inside Pakistan's undisputed territory since 1971, successfully targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This marks New Delhi's most significant military action within Pakistani territory in over five decades. (ANI)

NEW DELHI: The defence ministry will soon take up the case for a preliminary nod to a Rs 30,000 crore proposal to procure three regiments of the new indigenous quick reaction surface to air missile (QR-SAM) systems for the Army. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The induction of the QR-SAM systems will add to the existing air defence network of the IAF and the Army, which ranges from the long-range Russian S-400 'Triumf' surface-to-air missile systems (380 km interception range) and Barak-8 medium range SAM systems (70 km), jointly developed with Israel, to the Russian shoulder-fired Igla-S missiles (6 km), the upgraded L-70 anti-aircraft guns (3.5 km) and the indigenous integrated drone detection and interdiction systems (1km-2 km). While the DRDO is also readying the very short-range air defence missile systems (VSHORADS), which have a 6 km interception range, the real game-changer will be an air defence system with a 350 km range being developed under the ambitious Project Kusha. India plans to operationally deploy this long-range system by 2028-2029, with the defence ministry in Sept 2023 approving the AoN for procurement of five of its squadrons for the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,700 crore, as was first reported by TOI. Amit Shah approves ₹25 crore compensation for 2,060 houses damaged in J&K by Pakistani shelling post Operation Sindoor
A month after the Operation Sindoor, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday facilitated an additional provision of ₹ 25 crore from the Ministry of Home Affairs for 2,060 houses damaged by Pakistani shelling in border districts. The announcement by Amit Shah comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised additional compensation for houses damaged by Pakistani shelling in the border districts of Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi had announced an additional compensation of ₹ 2 lakh for each fully damaged house and ₹ 1 lakh for each partially damaged house. The Home Ministry ensured swift implementation of the decision and stated that similar compensation will also be provided in the border areas of Punjab. Earlier on 29–30 May 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch. During the visit, he handed over appointment letters on compassionate grounds to the family members of those who lost their lives due to cross-border firing. According to the norms. compensation for the damages caused by cross-border shelling was provided immediately. Following Operation Sindoor, several incidents of cross-border shelling were reported in border districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Due to this, hundreds of families living on residential areas, schools, religious structures including Gurudwaras, temples, mosques and commercial properties suffered. The administration took proactive measures to anticipate possible events and ensure effective response. According to the government release, 3.25 lakh people were evacuated from the border districts, of whom about 15,000 were accommodated in about 397 shelter sheds/accommodation centres equipped with facilities like food, water, health care, electricity, etc. A total of 394 ambulances were deployed in all border districts to take patients to hospitals for treatment, out of which 62 ambulances were deployed in Poonch district alone.
