GM Adds Power, Tech, and Special Editions to the 2026 Hummer EV

Miami Herald19-05-2025

"Subtle" was never a word that described any generation of the Hummer. The electrified version doesn't deviate, weighing in at nearly five tons, making a whopping 1,000 horsepower, and measuring a tremendous 18 feet from tip to tail. Apparently, GM decided that the Hummer EV simply wasn't crazy enough, juicing the EV with a mixture of special features and added performance that make it even more ludicrous for 2026.
GM improved the 2026 Hummer EV truck and SUV with some truly cool features. Bidirectional charging is one of the most pragmatic additions, allowing the Hummer EV to charge other EVs or power a home via its own power supplies. It's a niche, but certainly a useful tool to have. Super Cruise gets a few improvements, too, making small steps forward in how the truck's radar cruise control tracks vehicles in front of the driver. Smoother integration with Google Maps adds lane-specific guidance, and drivers now have the option of having the truck automatically adjust cruising speed for the posted speed limit. Two new paint colors - Coastal Dune and Auburn Matte - are available, joining new interior colors dubbed Granite Drift and Stealth Eclipse.
Of course, there are a few decidedly more fun changes for the 2026 Hummer EV, too. GM upped the output for the Hummer EV 3X pickup to 1,160 horsepower, an increase of 160 horsepower relative to the 2025 model year. In a comment to Motor1, GM says the bump in performance is exclusive to the body style and was accomplished by "optimization of software and propulsion calibration." As a result, the truck can now scoot from zero to 60 mph in a manufacturer-estimated 2.8 seconds. That's two-tenths of a second quicker than the outgoing model. Finally, a Carbon Fiber Edition, available on either body style, joins the lineup. It adds special Magnus Gray matte paint, Velocity Ember upholstery, unique 22-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, black emblems, and some carbon fiber accents.
The 2026 Hummer EV debuts a new King Crab drive mode, a rear-wheel steering mode designed to specifically enhance the truck's maneuverability in off-road settings. The automaker says that King Crab mode allows the rear wheels to turn "significantly faster" than the front ones, adding to the truck's off-road versatility. Apparently, GM will push this new drive mode to all GMC Hummer pickup and SUV models on the road via an over-the-air update coming later in the year. King Crab will occupy the "Mystery Mode" button, which GM used to tease "future possibilities."
Lots to unpack here, but King Crab being offered to all Hummer EV owners is perhaps the most notable takeaway. It's a real-world illustration of automotive software's flexibility and certainly paints a picture of what's possible in the future. While hardly necessary, more power and a special edition are welcome additions that are certain to entice a steady stream of buyers as the Hummer EV ages. Pricing and range details will follow later in the year.

3 Reasons to Buy This Top Auto Stock Before It's Too Late

General Motors has reduced its shares outstanding dramatically. GM is rapidly expanding its EV sales in the U.S. and lowering costs. The automaker's restructured business in China brought positive results. 10 stocks we like better than General Motors › General Motors (NYSE: GM) may be an afterthought when it comes to investments for many, but it may also be the best automotive stock for investors to get their hands on today. Not only does the company thrive with sales of full-size trucks and SUVs, but it's making strong progress with electric vehicles (EVs) and returning value to shareholders at an impressive clip. Here are three reasons GM might be the next stock you want to buy. There are two primary ways for companies to return value to shareholders: through a dividend or through share repurchases. In the case of share repurchases, as the company buys back shares and retires them, the earnings per share increases, which drives the value up. General Motors has been incredible at returning value to shareholders through share buybacks, and you can see how the stock price has responded as the number of shares outstanding declines. It started in late 2023, when GM announced a significant $10 billion accelerated share repurchase program, which was completed by the fourth quarter. GM approved a further $6 billion buyback in June 2024, and the automaker also increased its dividend by 25%. The automaker's cash flow is capable of handling such movements. GM generated $14 billion in adjusted automotive free cash flow in 2024 and returned roughly $7.6 billion to shareholders via dividends and buybacks, leaving plenty of liquidity for growth and strategic moves to offset tariff impacts. When it comes to EVs, it's not really a matter of if, but when they consume the roads globally. It's a tricky thing to balance sales of highly profitable gasoline-powered SUVs and trucks while trying to sell EVs, but General Motors has found a balance. While posting strong financial results driven by its internal combustion engine line, the company also posted EV sales up 94% during the first quarter, grabbing an impressive 10.4% market share in the U.S. That parks GM in the No. 2 spot for EV sales in the U.S., and marks Chevrolet as the industry's fastest-growing EV brand, driven by the Equinox and Blazer EVs. In even better news, roughly 60% of the EV buyers are trading in a non-GM vehicle, bringing more consumers into the brand. GM will still need to work diligently on reducing EV costs, especially batteries, for this to become an important chunk of its business, but it is the future of the industry, and GM is well-positioned in the U.S. for now. China's market has been engulfed in a brutal price war, driven by a plethora of competitors in a blossoming EV market, and foreign automakers have paid the price -- they are struggling in China right now, big time. Fortunately, GM recognized this early and made a massive restructuring effort, which included rightsizing operations, launching new vehicles, and optimizing dealer costs and inventory. All in, the charge would cost GM $5 billion in restructuring costs, but it did manage to report encouraging results in China during the final quarter of 2024. Following the introduction of new vehicles, sales sequentially surged 40% during the fourth quarter, the largest jump since the second quarter of 2022. As far as General Motors goes, the company is firing on all cylinders right now. Not only is it selling gasoline-powered vehicles at a high clip, and highly profitably, the company is expanding its EV prowess. It's also buying back shares at a clip so rapidly that its stock has only soared as a result. All this means General Motors is one of, if not the top, automotive stocks to buy now. Check Out This Weird SOHC-Converted Chevy Small Block for Sale

The latest car news, reviews, and features. If the only thing holding you back from a GM V8 swap is some sort of social-media-hardened dislike for overhead-valve (OHV, aka pushrod) motor designs, Bring a Trailer may have just the thing for you: a single-overhead-cam-swapped small block Chevy V8. It's not some oddball motor from a limited-production race car, but a garden-variety 327 with a purpose-built SOHC conversion. Pretty wild, huh? According to the accompanying Hot Rod article, the upgraded motors were good for 350 horsepower after the cam swap alone—or about the same amount you got from the L84 package engine in 1963, and that was the top-of-the-line engine with mechanical fuel injection. The low-compression (and carbureted) version offered only 250 horses. Sure, the power's nice, but there are plenty of other ways to get that from a small-block V8 without performing a lobotomy. Why go through all the trouble then? An overhead-cam engine benefits from a tighter valvetrain package with less reciprocating mass. Pushrods are simple, but they're long and heavy, and along with the rocker arms, they both contribute a good bit to an OHV engine's overall parasitic losses and limit their ability to rev higher. The overhead-cam setup eliminates them from the design while also allowing for lighter valve springs, and less mass is always good when you're trying to make top-end power. This particular conversion kit was produced by Pete Aardema. If that name rings a bell, that's because he's always doing something crazy with internal-combustion engines. Remember the land speed record car we featured a while back with a home-built V12? Yep, same guy. While a conversion kit is certainly less ambitious than a home-built engine, this thing is nonetheless impressive. It's effectively a bolt-on upgrade, and it even preserves the factory camshaft to continue functioning as a distributor drive. This could all be done with the heads in place, and all signs point to it being completely reversible. In this case, you get the kit pre-installed on this 1963 Chevrolet 327. And for such a novelty, it's pacing to go for a bit of a bargain. Those numbers always go up near the auction's end, of course, but this little bit of obscurity may not necessarily fetch top dollar.
