Murder accused held after 24 years
Udaya, along with his two brothers, allegedly hacked to death a man, identified as Kaibalya Pradhan, in Keranditola village under Chamakhandi police station area in Ganjam district on July 6, 2001 over a dispute.
Police had arrested Musha Pradhan, one of the brothers of Udaya Pradhan, the same day of the murder, while Udaya and his elder brother Pancham absconded from the village.'Police had earlier made several attempts to arrest Udaya Pradhan but he evaded arrests.

One notorious ganja peddler held, 22-kg ganja seized
Nellore: In a joint operation by Eagle team and local police headed by Balaji Nagar Circle Inspector K Sambasiva Rao, raids were conducted and a 51-year-old person allegedly responsible for smuggling ganja was arrested. The police seized 22-kg ganja and a car from him at SVGS College Grounds in the city on Sunday. The accused was identified as Beekara Prakash@ B Suryaprakash (51) of Krishna Nagar in Rajahmundry town of East Godavari district. Speaking to the mediapersons at SVGS College along with SP, Eagle Team Inspector General R K Ravikrishna has said that following a tip-off, Balaji Nagar CI Sambasiva Rao along with the Eagle team, conducted raids at SVGS on the accused and caught him while he was in possession of 22-kg ganja. The police seized a Maruthi Swift Car AP10 AY 5649 from him on the spot. The IG said that on the occasion, Balaji Nagar CI K Sambasiva Rao has fired two rounds at the accused when he tried to drive the vehicle towards police. The IG said that one constable Paton Firoz was injured as he got hit by the car and he was shifted to Government General Hospital (GGH) in Nellore city. The IG narrated that the accused used to bring ganja from Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district and sell the intoxicant substance to some people in Nellore city. The IG said that several cases have been registered against the accused (Beekara Prakash) over his alleged involvement in ganja smuggling in East Godavari, Eluru and Nellore districts. He said that as part of initiative in preventing ganja smuggling and narcotics, police department has launched two operations one is 'Operation Eagle' meant to eradicate ganja smuggling in the trains and another is 'Operation Garuda' aimed to seize unauthorized drugs in the medical stores. He said that under Operation Eagle, 23,000 kg of ganja was seized till date. The IG appealed to the people to inform the police if they notice ganja smuggling as their details were hide in secret. On the occasion, the IG visited constable Payon Firoz who is undergoing treatment at GGH in the city. Additional SP CH Soujanya, Nellore City DSP Sindhu Priya and others were present.

Teacher, with alleged Maoist links, held during Operation Garuda in Gajapati
BERHAMPUR: A teacher, who had Maoist links and was booked once, was among four fugitives Gajapati police arrested as part of its drive under 'Operation Garuda' over the past two days. Adava police arrested Pratap Kumar Nayak, a primary school teacher, for his alleged links with Maoists on Tuesday. Nayak has been working at Nuakhajuripada government primary school in Adava and was earlier booked in 2011 for alleged involvement with a Maoist organisation and participation in violent incidents across various locations. Gajapati SP Jatindra Kumar Panda said several other teachers in Adava, Mohana and R Udayagiri face similar allegations of Maoist links and illegal ganja trafficking and have been asked to surrender. Police have also sent letters to the block education officer regarding the matter. 'If they fail to surrender, they will be arrested wherever they are', said the SP. However, Mohana block education officer Narendra Behera said so far his office has not received any such letter from the police. 'If any letter arrives naming a teacher, appropriate action will be taken as per government regulations,' he added. In a separate case, Adava police arrested three brothers- Soho Sobhasundar (58), Alix Sobhasundar (60) and Tej Sobhasundar (62) of Aliganda village in connection with a 2006 family quarrel case on Thursday. The three were produced in court on the day.

Data analytics, response system help curb road fatalities in Sundargarh, Keonjhar
ROURKELA: Amid the high road fatalities in Sundargarh and Keonjhar, two key mining districts, Odisha Police has made good use of data analytics and paired it with response mechanism to bring down the numbers. A project piloted in the most accident-prone areas has helped curb fatalities as well as injuries. As part of the initiative, Koida, K Balang, Lahunipada, Chandiposh, Brahmani Tarang and RN Pali police stations under Rourkela police district and Birmitrapur, Rajgangpur, Bargaon, Sadar and Hemgir police stations under Sundargarh police district have been included in the pilot initiative which was conducted in July. Six police stations under Keonjhar too are part of it. Police sources informed that accident data for the one month period showed encouraging changes after implementation of the pilot project. According to statistics, Rourkela which had reported 17 fatalities in July 2024 marked a drop to 12 this year. In Sundargarh, 18 deaths were reported in July 2024 which came down to nine in July 2025. In Keonjhar, the 21 fatalities in July last year fell to eight this time. To understand the accident patterns, the police made use of Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) web application and analysed accident days, exact windows, geographic location as well as associated factors to break down what led to the high number of fatalities.
