Newcastle United submit €80 million offer for Benjamin Sesko
Manchester United were initially the favourites to sign Sesko, but Newcastle's intensified efforts over the last few days have tilted the balance in their favour.
Sesko is reportedly now keen on a move to St James' Park, attracted by Newcastle's burgeoning status, Champions League football and a key role in the team's attacking strategy under manager Eddie Howe.
Newcastle are working to finalise a deal with Leipzig and have tabled a bid worth an initial €75 million plus €5m in add-ons.
This would smash the existing club-record €70m fee that Newcastle paid for Alexander Isak three years ago.
Leipzig are aiming for a guaranteed €75m to sanction Sesko's sale just 12 months after he signed a new five-year deal at the Red Bull Arena last summer.
Several Premier League clubs have courted Sesko since then and could finally be set for a move to English football.
Despite Newcastle's progress on the Sesko front over the last couple of hours, ManUnited are not giving up and remain in contact with the player's camp.
They will need to act fast as Leipzig want a quick resolution regarding Sesko's future.
Leipzig are interested in Rasmus Hojlund and could be open to a player-plus-cash deal. However, he is keen to remain at Old Trafford, meaning United will likely have to match Newcastle's bid.

Earlier, Jaiswal was out for 118, his second hundred of the series after the talented left-hander's ton at Headingley. The 23-year-old opener received superb support from Akash Deep in a third-wicket partnership of 107, the paceman belying his status as a nightwatchman with an accomplished 66 -- his maiden Test fifty. Ravindra Jadeja and Sundar, both fresh from hundreds in Manchester, each made 53, with Sundar launching a brutal assault after a depleted England took the new ball. A wayward home team, a bowler down after Chris Woakes suffered a shoulder injury diving in the field on Thursday, harmed their own cause by dropping six catches in the innings, with Jaiswal reprieved three times. India resumed Saturday on 75-2. Deep had made 21 when he edged Josh Tongue only for Crawley, diving across to his left from third slip, to floor the two-handed catch. Deep went to fifty when he pulled Gus Atkinson for his ninth four. But with India on the verge of batting through the morning session without losing a wicket, Deep got a leading edge to backward point off Jamie Overton. - Gill falls shy of Gavaskar record - Shubman Gill, who has enjoyed a remarkable first series as India captain, fell to the very first ball after lunch when lbw to Gus Atkinson for 11. England dropped a sixth catch when, having set a trap to have Jaiswal taken at leg gully, the batsman duly obliged, only for Duckett to put him down off Overton. Jaiswal was eventually dismissed when he ramped Tongue straight to deep backward point before Jadeja completed his fifth fifty of the series in 71 balls. England took the new ball as soon as possible, with India 342-7 off 80 overs and promptly tried to bounce out Sundar in what proved to be an expensive ploy. The left-hander responded with three superb sixes, including hoisting Tongue, who finished with figures of 5-125, over fine leg and deep midwicket in the space of three balls. Liverpool goalkeeper suffers nightmare start to loan after controversial penalty in heavy defeat
Liverpool loanee Harvey Davies suffered a nightmare debut at Crawley Town, conceding a penalty within nine minutes of the start of the new League Two season. The goalkeeper joined Crawley on a season-long loan at the end of June, in a summer of major overhaul in Liverpool's goalkeeping ranks. The 21-year-old has trained regularly with Alisson and Co over the last year, but is yet to play a first-team match for the Reds. And his debut for Crawley didn't go to plan with the Red Devils losing 3-0 against Grimsby Town on Saturday. A tentative and nervous start set the tone for the visitors at Blundell Park. Davies misjudged the flight of a long pass downfield in the early stages and, after stalling, came flying off his line to retrieve the ball. But Davies will feel disappointed with his attempts to stop Evan Khouri's strike from distance after the break. Despite getting a hand to it, the on-loan Liverpool man was unable to stop it sliding under his grasp and into the net. It was another moment to forget on a difficult first outing for Crawley. The three-goal loss means Scott Lindsey's side sit bottom of the table on the opening weekend of the season. But there were some positive moments for Davies, who made two smart stops to twice keep out Jayden Sweeney. Oddly, his goalkeeper's jersey didn't feature a Crawley badge and was just a plain blue Adidas shirt with a no.1 located where the club crest usually appears. The stint at Crawley is Davies' second loan of his career, having joined Crewe Alexandra for the 2023/24 season. He is one of three keepers to leave Liverpool this summer, with Caoimhin Kelleher joining Brentford in a permanent switch and Vitezslav signing on loan for Ajax. In their place, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman and Armin Pesci are now playing backup to Alisson at Liverpool. For Davies and Crawley, a home match against Newport County beckons next week. As for Liverpool's other loanee in the EFL, Isaac Mabaya played 20 minutes in Wigan Athletic's 3-1 win over Northampton Town.
