
How CTOs can capture the $750 billion AI opportunity
AI-powered software innovation is generating savings of $28,249 per developer annually, according to GitLab's 2025 executive research report, which surveyed thousands of C-level executives from around the world. Applying this to the world's 27 million developers means that AI has the potential to unlock more than $750 billion in global value annually.
With savings like that, it's no wonder C-Suite leaders are on board with AI's potential to drive greater efficiency in software innovation. Nine out of ten executives (91%) say that software innovation is now a core business priority for their organization.
But there's still room to grow. While executives aspire to build human-AI partnerships that split software development work 50-50, the majority report that AI is currently only handling about 25% of the work. To help operationalize AI among development teams, leaders must effectively communicate and frame its value and connect development activities to business outcomes by focusing on problem-solving capabilities and direct business impact rather than code volume. This shift in thinking will be critical to fully realizing AI's potential.
AI isn't eliminating developer jobs. However, it is fundamentally changing what those jobs require and how executives need to lead and structure teams to capitalize on this massive opportunity.
The organizations capturing AI value share three critical traits:
They have the right CTO strategy with relentless customer focus
They're applying platform thinking to enable their teams to scale more effectively with AI
They're investing in team structures and upskilling to help their developers reap the benefits of AI
LEVERAGE THE RIGHT TECHNICAL LEADERS
With 82% of C-suite leaders willing to invest over half of their IT budgets in software innovation, it's clear that this is the moment for technical leaders to shine. I've found throughout my career that CTOs come in several different styles, and companies need varying styles of technical leadership at different points in their evolution.
There are three CTO styles: builder, strategist, and guardian.
Builders
Builder CTOs excel at innovating with AI, establishing core technical architecture and developing innovative products while constantly validating their assumptions with customer feedback. Builder CTOs are ideal for smaller, high-growth companies, and those that are earlier in their AI journeys.
Strategists
Strategist CTOs shine when companies mature, combining deep technical acumen and business knowledge to build platforms, develop long-term visions, cultivate strategic partnerships, and position the company for long-term, scalable growth. The strategist CTO can help make AI into a permanent, value-additive component of the company's strategic platform.
Guardian
Guardian CTOs excel at helping companies with complex IT infrastructures and large customer bases maintain stability, security and operational efficiency. They are the right fit for companies whose priorities include implementing governance and security measures around AI, as well as establishing AI processes and standards to maximize efficiency and cost savings.
Success in AI-powered software innovation requires leadership that can identify targeted AI applications, translate them into customer value and enable teams to focus on higher-value work.
EMBRACE PLATFORM THINKING FOR SCALE
As organizations grow, teams specialize in focusing on specific challenges, but with more teams, coordination among them can become inefficient. By the time an organization reaches the tens of thousands, those divisions often turn into silos that can hinder effective collaboration among humans and prevent the organization from realizing the benefits of human-AI collaboration.
In my experience, the most effective CTOs are implementing platform-based approaches to set their companies up for scalable growth without creating silos. The most common way is to establish a centralized team that's responsible for building a platform that product teams across the organization can use. This team's primary purpose is to automate mundane tasks and provide streamlined workflows for all software innovation teams throughout the organization—a role that AI can enhance.
CTOs may need to establish specialized teams to support a complicated subsystem required by the rest of the organization. An organization with a complex need, such as evaluating fraud risk in new customers or solving supply-chain complexities in real time, might organize a team dedicated to supporting that as an AI-powered 'subsystem' that the rest of the company can use.
Setting up software teams for success in the AI era means letting humans focus on work that AI can't do well. Although AI can assist with many software development tasks like coding, it cannot define the 'why' behind a project.
Engineers who can translate business needs into technical solutions and anticipate future trends will be invaluable. Those who can combine technical skills with critical thinking skills will be better able to guide AI technologies and realize the productivity gains of human-AI partnerships.
Training in specific AI-related skills, such as prompt engineering and data management, will be crucial. Human contributions that will matter the most are creativity, strategic vision, and collaboration.
However, there's a significant perception gap to address. A recent GitLab DevSecOps report found that 25% of individual contributors reported that their organizations don't provide adequate AI training, compared to only 15% of C-level executives who shared the same sentiment.
Forward-thinking CTOs will frame upskilling as an investment in the human-AI partnership that will deliver competitive advantages.
THE FUTURE STILL NEEDS HUMAN INNOVATORS
The $750 billion opportunity represented by AI-powered software innovation won't materialize automatically. Taking advantage of the power of AI requires appropriate leadership, platform thinking, and upskilling in a way that enables humans to focus on what they do best while letting AI manage and automate mundane tasks.
AI is changing the software development landscape, but it's not eliminating the need for skilled engineers. Instead, it's shifting the focus toward higher-value work that requires human judgment, ingenuity, and strategic thinking. Over time, human software innovators will be able to focus increasingly on the work that drives competitive advantage. Companies embracing AI-powered innovation can then transform themselves and their industries in unforeseen ways.

"The Fluid Stack lease and Google support agreement are carefully structured to enhance our credit profile and position us to scale quickly." TeraWulf's stock has surged 55.4% this year and skyrocketed 144% from this time in 2024. TeraWulf beat Wall Street's quarterly earnings expectations, with revenue increasing 34% year-over-year to $47.6 million. The company cited a higher average bitcoin price and expanded mining capacity, offset partly by expected headwinds from increased network difficulty and the April 2024 halving, where bitcoin reduced the block reward by 50%. "My target price is around $9.50," Guilfoyle said. "This is a trade, not an investment, and I expect to be flat the name by the closing bell should short-term traders take profits en masse on Friday." Clear Street analyst Brian Dobson raised the investment firm's price target on TeraWulf to $12 from $9 and affirmed a buy rating on the shares, according to The Fly. The colocation agreements with Fluidstack, supported by Google's $1.8 billion lease backstop and equity stake, and 80-year ground lease at the Cayuga site in New York, "materially enhance" TeraWulf's long-term growth profile, the analyst said. The firm upped its 2027 Ebitda estimate to reflect TeraWulf's expanding high performance computing portfolio. It sees potential upside to its outlook as it does not consider new business wins. Citizens JMP analyst Greg Miller raised the firm's price target on TeraWulf to $13 from $7 and maintained an outperform rating on the shares. The company is likely to exit mining by the next halving event, and it retains the flexibility to redeploy mining capacity toward HPC, aligning with customer demand trends, the firm says. Analysts have noted a shift from bitcoin mining to AI data centers, as both require huge amounts of electricity. A report by the International Energy Association said that electricity demand from data centers worldwide is set to more than double by 2030 to around 945 terawatt-hours, slightly more than the entire electricity consumption of Japan today. "Hyperscalers with generative AI needs are particularly interested in converting to bitcoin mining data centers due to the substantial power requirements and the urgency of deployment timelines," Prakash Vijayan, a senior analyst with Driehaus Capital Management, wrote in November. Vijayan said generative AI applications demand immense computational power and energy, often 10 times more than standard operations. "Bitcoin mining data centers are equipped with advanced cooling systems and have access to cheap, substantial energy sources," he said. "This presents an ideal solution for these needs." By repurposing existing bitcoin mining facilities, Vijayan said, hyperscalers can significantly reduce timelines and meet the growing demand for AI services more efficiently. "Given these trends, bitcoin miners are increasingly transitioning to AI data centers as a strategic move to diversify their revenue streams and leverage their existing infrastructure," he added. Canary CEO Predicts Bitcoin Will Hit $150K This Year—But Ethereum Surge Won't Last
Bitcoin could climb as high as $150,000 before the end of the year, followed by another bear market in 2026, according to Steven McClurg, CEO of Canary Capital. But he's not convinced that the recent Ethereum surge will continue. The BTC prediction comes as crypto markets flirt with record highs and institutional investors pile into exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Bitcoin hit a new all-time high of $124,128 on Wednesday. McClurg attributed the rally to rising demand from ETFs and an expanding base of institutional buyers, including sovereign wealth funds, pensions, and corporate treasuries. 'These inflows are creating a higher price in Bitcoin,' he said. The forecast comes as Canary Capital has filed ETF applications tied to several altcoins, including XRP, Sui, Cronus (CRO), Hedera (HBAR), and President Trump's official meme coin on Solana. The firm has not filed an ETF application related to Ethereum, which McClurg criticized as an outdated network—though ETH has been the biggest gainer in recent weeks among major cryptocurrencies, nearing an all-time high on Thursday before cooling off alongside the broader market. 'I'm not a big fan of Ethereum, only because it is an older technology,' he said. 'There's a lot of other protocols that are faster, cheaper to transact, and fundamentally more secure.' What's Driving Ethereum's Surge—And Can It Last? McClurg credited Ethereum with 'a great run over about a five-year period,' but said newer blockchains like Solana and Sui have eclipsed it. 'I do expect it to wane and not see all-time highs,' he added. One analyst that Decrypt spoke with questioned McClurg's skepticism toward Ethereum. 'Ethereum will be extremely hard to compete with despite what some call 'older tech,' because Ethereum owns the developer ecosystem,' Amberdata Director of Derivatives Greg Magadini told Decrypt. 'It's like the iPhone platform that enables developers to build apps directly on its infrastructure. Those network effects only compound over time.' Magadini predicts Ethereum will catch up to Bitcoin on a relative basis, with ETH/BTC reaching 7%—implying an ETH price between $8,000 and $10,000. Despite this, Magadini agreed that Bitcoin could exceed $150,000 in 2025, driven by inflation hedging and investor appetite for risk. 'Given the combination of an equity market rally and political pressure on the Fed to cut rates while inflation remains high, we have the perfect context for higher Bitcoin prices,' he said. 'Bitcoin moves like a mix of digital gold and a risk-on asset—and right now, both those sentiments are helping prices move higher.' Canary's McClurg also floated the idea of a Litecoin comeback, comparing it to 'silver' alongside Bitcoin's 'gold.' The firm has also filed with the SEC to launch a spot Litecoin ETF. Billions in Ethereum Waiting to Be Unstaked Could Add Sell Pressure to ETH: Analyst 'Litecoin has the ability to process Ordinals a lot faster,' McClurg said, referring to the digital art and data inscription that critics say has strained the Bitcoin network (though less so lately). 'So I do expect Litecoin to come back in a major way and to be used for smaller transactions.' McClurg further noted that crypto's seasonality could add volatility in the months ahead. 'August is historically a bad month for any risk asset, especially cryptocurrencies,' he said. 'September and October are usually very strong.' Sam Altman's latest delusional AI prediction doesn't pass the test
Artificial intelligence has come a long way since OpenAI introduced the world to ChatGPT 3.5 in late 2022. The release of the large language model sets the stage for an AI revolution that the world is still trying to understand. AI has many more uses than running large language models (LLMs), and the business world is already using the advanced technology to transform e-commerce (like when Amazon uses AI to recommend products), automotive navigation (AI underpins the autonomous technology most car companies use), robotics, and image generation. Enterprising students have used ChatGPT to enhance their studies and reduce research time, while other students have just used the technology to cheat. But OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman says children born today will never be able to surpass the "intelligence" of his products. Sam Altman believes we are living in a technological Stone Age that will have future generations snickering at how bad we had it. "A kid born today will never be smarter than AI, ever. And a kid born today, by the time that kid kind of understands the way the world works, will just always be used to an incredibly fast rate of things improving and discovering new science," Altman said in a recent interview floating around on social media. It will seem unthinkable and stone-age-like that we used to use computers or phones or any kind of technology that was not way smarter than we were." The citizens of his mythical future will eventually pity us lowly non-AI users. "We will think like, 'how bad those people of the 2020s had it,'" Altman added. The beauty of Altman's prediction is that he can be proven right in multiple ways. The tech could become so advanced and helpful that humans literally can't live without it, or children could become so slavish to LLMs like ChatGPT in the future that they become reliant on it to perform the simplest tasks. Last year, Turnitin's AI detection tool scanned over 200 million writing assignments and detected AI use in one in 10 assignments. However, only three out of every 100 assignments were primarily generated by AI. "We hit a steady state, and it hasn't changed dramatically since then," said Turnitin Chief Product Officer Annie Chechitelli. "There are students who are leaning on AI too much. But it's not pervasive. It wasn't this, 'The sky is falling.'" But Altman expects AI adoption to only increase in the near future, so the number of students using the tech to cheat will likely also increase. Harvard Graduate School of Education recently published a report on the use of AI by teens and young adult students. When asked what they wanted adults to know about AI, the kids said that AI is not just used to cheat, but is also helpful for finding answers to unasked questions. But 41% of the kids today (not the ones in Altman's future) said they are "acutely aware" of the potential issues with generative AI. "Across demographics, those surveyed also expressed fears about AI's impact on their future job markets, especially the creative pursuits they mentioned above. They also highlighted potential privacy concerns, and generative AI's use to create and spread misinformation and disinformation," the report said. So it appears Sam Altman and company have some work to do to create the future they seem to believe is inevitable.
