Hindustan Times2 days ago
Gowtam Tinnanuri's Vijay Devarakonda-starrer Kingdom is facing stiff opposition from Tamil groups over the depiction of Sri Lankan Tamils in the film as villain. The situation is such that there are concerns about the film being screened peacefully in Tamil Nadu. Kingdom: Vijay Deverakonda plays a police constable turned spy called Suri in the Gowtam Tinnanuri film.
TN Police to protect theatres screening Kingdom
The Madras High Court on Thursday placed on record the undertaking given by the Tamil Nadu state police that they would provide protection, if needed, to the movie theatres, where the film is screened. Pro-Tamil outfit Naam Thamizhar Katchi (NTK) has staged protests in various parts of the state, interrupting screenings of Kingdom.
Government advocate (criminal side) gave the undertaking when the petition filed by M/s SSI Production came up for hearing before Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy.
In its petition, SSI Production sought a direction to the police authorities to provide adequate police protection to the theatres to enable the peaceful and uninterrupted screening of the film Kingdom, and further to restrain Seeman (Chief Coordinator of NTK) and his followers from interfering with the lawful screening of the film.
What is the controversy
In his order, the judge said when the censor board has certified the film, no third party could prevent the exhibition of the movie. If any threat was made by any individual or organisation, action should be taken against them, the judge said.
At the same time, if Seeman, Chief Coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi and his party cadres wanted to express their dissent, they could hold a protest after getting permission from the police.
They have the liberty to express their contrary view. But, they could conduct the agitation only in a lawful manner, the judge added.
Kingdom, produced by Sithara Entertainments and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, stars Vijay Devarakonda in the lead role. Tamil outfits have taken offence to how Sri Lankan Tamils are depicted as the villains the film, and the primary antagonist is named Murugan. Despite the protests, Kingdom has had a successful run at the box office, earning over ₹75 crore worldwide in a week. The makers are planning to release the film in Sri Lanka now.

Rishab Shetty, Kichcha Sudeep condemn overnight razing of Vishnuvardhan's memorial: An explainer on the controversy

Kannada star Vishnuvardhan, who also acted in a few Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi movies, died at age 59 on 30 December 2009. The 'Sahasa Simha' died of a heart attack at the King's Court Hotel in Mysore. His last rites were performed with full state honours at Abhiman Studio in Bengaluru. On Saturday, fans woke up to the shocking news that a structure at his memorial had been razed on Thursday, with fans protesting at the studios on Friday. Vishnuvardhan was a popular actor in South Indian, particularly Kannada cinema. Vishnuvardhan's grave site razed TNIE reported that the land in Abhiman Studios once belonged to the late Kannada actor Balakrishna. However, the current owner reportedly razed the structure at the memorial overnight with permission from the court and under police protection. Film director Ravi Srivathsa, who recorded a video of the demolished structure, was quoted as saying, 'This is my god's (Vishnuvardhan) place, and it has been destroyed. The man who gave jobs and shelter to many has been treated this way.' Balakrishna's daughter Geeta Bali alleged, 'I learnt about it through the media and was shocked. My elder brother, Ganesh, was murdered last year. The person behind his murder is also involved in the demolition. Politicians are also involved.' The memorial at Abhiman Studios included an 8-foot statue of Vishnuvardhan, which is now the bone of contention between the new owners and fans. Despite long-standing demand to preserve the site, the demolition has frustrated fans who called out the government, police, and the Film Chamber. According to a OneIndia report, a new memorial spread across 2.75 acres in Mysuru has been in development since 2020, with plans to showcase Vishnuvardhan's personal belongings. Kichcha Sudeep, Rishab Shetty condemn the razing of memorial Kannada star Rishab Shetty on Saturday evening condemned the razing of Vishnuvardhan's memorial overnight. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in Kannada, 'What has happened in the case of Vishnuvardhan sir's memorial is condemnable. It has deeply hurt every fan who worships him wholeheartedly. In the case of a great actor of the state, such incidents are happening again and again, which is an insult to his personality and service to the arts. #VishnuSir #VishnuVardhan #Injustice #VishnuVardhanSmaraka.' Kichcha Sudeep also condemned the move and wrote in a long note on X, 'Sahasa Simha Vishnuvardhan represents an unending admiration and respect. The night before last, the destruction of his memorial feels as painful and distressing as if a temple of a god we have believed in and revered for years was shattered.' He also added that many, including him, had asked authorities if they needed money to maintain the structure when the case was in the High Court. 'We were ready for everything, I myself said so. Yet, the government didn't pay attention to this, or perhaps, without providing a proper explanation to the court, without burying it in the ground, they said the memorial at the cremation site isn't valid since there's already a memorial in Mysore,' he added. Sudeep also added that he will go to court, if need be, to appeal to the individual who owns the land to preserve at least a small portion of where Vishnuvardhan's memorial once stood. 'I am speaking as a fan of Vishnuvardhan, not as Kichcha. The pain is immense,' wrote Sudeep. The actor also posted a video reiterating the same in a video and questioning the move to demolish the memorial, and reiterating that he will stand up against it. Dhruva Sarja said Vishnuvardhan does not need a memorial to immortalise him, but condemned the manner in which it was razed, writing, 'There is no death for a true achiever, nor for art... Vishnu Appaji is immortal... Why does a person who has built a temple in the hearts of crores of Kannadigas need a memorial? Yet, in this land, such an insult to such an achiever is not right. It causes immense pain to the heart. There are many questions to ask upon hearing this, but as a Kannadiga and an artist, in this moment, I stand honestly with the fans of Vishnu Sir. I am waiting for your next move. Jai Kannadambe, Vishnu Dada is immortal…' Vishnuvardhan's wife, Bharathi, and their two daughters, Keerthi and Chandana, are reportedly yet to comment on the controversy.

Bobby Deol On Thalapathy Vijay's Last Film Jana Nayagan: ‘People Gather Wherever He Goes'

Last Updated: Bobby Deol shares his experience working with Thalapathy Vijay in Jana Nayagan, rumoured to be Vijay's final movie before politics. Bollywood actor Bobby Deol is set to share the screen with Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay in the upcoming political action drama Jana Nayagan. In a recent interview with Faridoon Shahryar on YouTube, the Animal star opened up about his experience working in South Indian cinema, his admiration for Vijay, and his earlier collaborations with regional stars. 'It's His Last Film" — Bobby on Vijay's Political Plans Speaking about Jana Nayagan, Bobby revealed that the film is expected to hit theatres during Pongal 2026 and may mark Vijay's final outing before stepping into politics. 'I am doing a film with Vijay Thalapathy. It is gonna be released on Pongal. It's his last film because he's going to join politics — that is what he is saying," Bobby shared. Calling Vijay a 'massive star," Bobby recounted how the production team had to limit outdoor shoots to avoid overwhelming crowds. 'I initially asked the team where we would be shooting. However, they told me we'll mainly have to shoot within studios because if Thalapathy Vijay sir goes out, people gather around, and we won't be able to work. He is that big of a star," he said. Memories of Working with NBK and Suriya During the conversation, Bobby also reflected on his previous experiences in South Indian films, including his work with Nandamuri Balakrishna and Suriya. 'It was great working with Bala sir. He is a star of the masses — that's his title. Over there, everyone has something like this to their name. He is a great person to work with," Bobby said of NBK. He then addressed his role in Kanguva, which starred Suriya, admitting the project did not meet expectations. 'I did Kanguva, which did not do well. However, I always want to do a movie with Suriya… he is a great actor, but the script went wrong," he candidly stated. About Jana Nayagan Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is rumoured to feature Vijay as a former police officer drawn into a high-stakes political battle. Alongside Vijay and Bobby Deol, the cast includes Pooja Hegde, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, Priyamani, and Mamitha Baiju in pivotal roles. The film is slated for a January 9, 2026 release, strategically timed ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. While speculation remains that this could be Vijay's swansong before entering politics, his co-star Mamitha Baiju recently suggested that his political plans may hinge on the election outcome. With a powerful ensemble cast, a politically charged storyline, and the pairing of Bobby Deol with Thalapathy Vijay for the first time, Jana Nayagan is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about releases of 2026. Box Office: Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie aims to be the second widest release after 2.0 for a Tamil origin film in Hindi

Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring , with a bunch of other massive Indian film actors like Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Shruti Haasan and others, is all set to hit theatres on 14th August, with North American premieres from the 13th of August. The movie's hype is not just restricted to the Southern states of India but there is ample hype in the North as well. The North India distributor of Coolie, Pen Marudhar, is trying its best to get the second widest release for a Tamil movie in the Hindi belt, after Rajinikanth's own 2.0. Coolie Targets The 2nd Widest Release For A Kollywood Movie In Hindi Belt, Only Behind 2.0 There are striking differences in 2.0 and Coolie due to which a release size as wide as the former is not practically possible for the latter. First and foremost, 2.0 was a solo release while Coolie is clashing with Bollywood's biggest release of the year, War 2. 2.0 was a sequel to one of the most loved Tamil movies in the Hindi belt, and above that, it had an a-list Hindi movie star, Akshay Kumar, in a prominent role. Coolie has Aamir Khan but his role is not expected to be as prominent as Akshay Kumar in 2.0, for neutral Hindi film audiences to give the movie a definite chance purely on the actor's name. Also, one must not ignore the fact that holdover titles are still doing extremely well, with Mahavatar Narsimha showing the best hold. This animated movie presented by Hombale Films will be in contention to get good screens, even in its fourth week. Coolie Targets A Wide Release In The Hindi Belt, Despite A Competitor As Able As War 2 Coolie targets a screen count of over 1000, but the exact number can't be confirmed. The booking of screens and other negotiations are still going on as you read this. Both YRF and Pen Marudhar are aggressive distributors who know what's best for their film. Regardless of the behind the scenes battle for good India-wide exhibition, the movie with the better word of mouth will eventually get the screens and shows that they deserve. There is nothing that is as powerful as word of mouth. We have seen in the last month itself, with Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha, that movies with less screens than their potential on the opening day, can get more screens through the course of their run. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
