SIR of poll rolls will help remove bogus voters in riverine areas: Assam CM
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (August 11, 2025) said a special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls would help remove bogus voters in the State's riverine areas.
Such areas, dotted with chars (sandbars), are primarily inhabited by Bengali-speaking or migrant Muslims, often perceived as Bangladeshi in Assam.
'In the chars and other riverine areas, the voter list is filled with the names of the deceased and individuals living elsewhere. Yet, these areas often witness a 100% voting,' the Chief Minister told journalists in western Assam's Chirang.
He said linking the names of voters with their Aadhaar numbers during the SIR process would prevent duplication and ensure cleaner electoral rolls.

The Chief Minister also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for opposing the SIR of the voter lists in Bihar, where Assembly polls are due later this year. 'He is not clear about what he wants. He should tell the Election Commission to revise the voter lists with Aadhaar-linking so that a person cannot vote in two places,' he said.
'If the voter lists are so erroneous, how did the Congress win in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana? After EVMs, he is using the voter list as a weapon now,' the Chief Minister said.
He also defended the eviction drives across the State, rejecting allegations that these were being carried out in minority-dominated areas.
'We are evicting Miya Muslim encroachers from forest land, village grazing reserves, and professional grazing reserves. Our people do not encroach upon such lands. Unlike the tribal people, non-tribals are not eligible for land deeds in such areas,' the Chief Minister said.
Miya is a pejorative term for Muslims with roots in present-day Bangladesh.
He asserted that protests by organisations such as the All-Assam Minority Students' Union against the eviction drives would not change the government's policy to uproot illegal settlers. 'There will be more evictions if such organisations make noises,' he said.

Thiruvananthapuram: Close on the heels of widespread protests against governor-chancellor Rajendra Arlekar 's directive to observe 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' in higher education institutions on Aug 14, Kerala University college development committee director in-charge sent a circular to affiliated colleges against organising programmes without the consent of 'appropriate authorities'. Committee director in-charge Biju V had on Monday shared with affiliated colleges a communication he received from the office of vice-chancellor regarding chancellor's directive to observe Aug 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. In the new communique to affiliated colleges on Tuesday, reportedly at govt's behest, Biju pointed out that chief minister openly declared Kerala govt's policy regarding the commemoration of Partition Horrors Day. "In this context, steps in this regard may be taken with the consent of appropriate authorities," Biju said. Later, the committee director expressed his wish to relinquish his charge and informed VC in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal about it. CPM and Congress functionaries came out against governor's efforts to observe Partition Horrors Day, an idea first mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few years ago. Student organisations and youth organisations of both CPM and Congress registered strong protests against the proposal and said they wouldn't let such observance be forced upon students on campuses. While Kerala, Kannur and KTU vice-chancellors asked officials concerned to share the chancellor's directive with principals of affiliated colleges, other ad hoc VCs instructed registrars concerned to take further steps. Cusat VC issued a directive to organise a seminar on the subject. The chancellor asked VCs to organise seminars or theatre performances to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. TMC slams BJP over ‘citizenship' status of its 2 Bongaon MLAs
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: A fresh controversy has erupted over the citizenship status of two BJP MLAs in Bongaon, ratcheting up the political temperature between Trinamool and BJP over the special intensive revision (SIR) of poll rolls. The names of the MLAs' parents are missing from the recently published Bengal 2002 SIR data. The issue surfaced after the TMC-backed faction of All India Matua Mahasangha submitted a deputation to the Bongaon sub-divisional officer (SDO) on Tuesday, demanding the disqualification of Bongaon North MLA Ashok Kirtaniya. The organisation alleged that while the 2002 electoral roll contains the MLA's name — then a resident of Ghatbaur panchayat — it does not include the names of his father or other family members. The Mahasangha claimed Kirtaniya's father entered India illegally after 2010. Prosenjit Biswas, representing the Mahasangha, said: "We will approach the Union home minister and assembly speaker seeking Ashok Kirtaniya's disqualification as an MLA." Trinamool accused him of being a Bangladeshi national, claiming that neither he nor his parents were listed in the 2002 rolls. These included two Bangladeshi records — one from April 2022 in which the chairman of Nizamuddin Union Parishad claimed that Majumdar's family members were residents of Nishchintapur village in Gopalganj, and another from 1996 showing his father, Santosh Kumar Majumdar, as the seller in a land deed. TMC alleged that Majumdar moved to India after 2002 and illegally enrolled in the voter list in Palla under Gopalnagar PS. Denying the allegations, Majumdar said: "My father passed away before 2002. I moved to Mumbai for work, so I couldn't be physically present during voter list hearings, which is why my name was added later. I possess all necessary documents proving my Indian citizenship.
