WI vs AUS: Mitchell Marsh to play as specialist batter, bowling remains ‘offline'

India Today4 days ago
Mitchell Marsh has confirmed he will play as a specialist batter in Australia's upcoming T20I series against the West Indies. The 33-year-old has not bowled since the Test series against India and has only bowled once - during an ODI against England at Lord's in September 2024.Marsh also didn't bowl in any of his 13 matches for the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2025 IPL season. In the West Indies T20Is, he will open the batting alongside Jake Fraser-McGurk, who returns to the squad in place of the injured Spencer Johnson.advertisement"Currently the bowling's offline and we'll just see where that gets to. But looking forward to just playing as a batsman for the moment,' Marsh said.
Of the players who featured in Australia's 3-0 Test series win, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Alex Carey will not take part in the limited-overs series. Marsh said their absence creates an opportunity for emerging talents to step up and showcase their skills."First and foremost, it's always 'we're representing Australia, we're here to win the series' and culturally, that's how we want to go about it. There will be guys that get opportunities. We've obviously got a few guys missing for this series [for] a well-earned rest. We'll see guys bat in different positions and get opportunities in certain positions,' Marsh added. Amongst the newcomers, Mitchell Owen is set to make his debut in the opening T20I on July 20 (July 21 in India) at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. Owen played a key role in the Hobart Hurricanes' title-winning campaign in the 2024-25 Big Bash League, including scoring a century in the final. Attention will also be on rising talents like Cooper Connolly and others eager to make their mark.Australia squad for West Indies T20Is Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshius, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Owen, Adam Zampa- Ends

ENG vs IND 4th Test live streaming: Where to watch Day 2 live for free?

Day 2 of the 4th Test between England and India will be played at Old Trafford cricket ground today as Team India batters Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur look to pile on more runs on England with the score at 264/4 ahead of the second day. With Rishabh Pant likely to be ruled out for the Test match due to the injury he suffered in the final session of Day 1, India will have to continue without him and will have one less batter in both the innings now. The match will take place at the Old Trafford cricket ground in Manchester, England. When will the ENG vs IND 4th Test Day 2 begin? The ENG vs IND 4th Test opening day will begin at 3:30 p.m. IST. IND vs ENG Test: Substitution in cricket? Michael Vaughan has an idea after Rishabh Pant's injury

Rishabh Pant went off the field after injuring his right foot on Day 1 of the fourth Test between India and England. (AP) Rishabh Pant's painful exit from the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Wednesday reignited a larger debate in world cricket — should like-for-like substitutes be allowed for injuries? Pant, batting on 37, was struck flush on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. The ball crashed into his toe, causing visible swelling and bleeding. While England went up in appeal for leg-before, replays showed a faint inside edge, sparing Pant the dismissal. But there was no escaping the physical damage. After receiving on-field treatment and struggling to stand, India's wicketkeeper-batter was ferried off in a mini ambulance, visibly in pain and limping, and was later taken for scans . Rishabh Pant suffers right foot injury in India vs England Test; taken off in an ambulance It has now emerged that Pant will out for a lengthy period and is unlikely to return for the fourth or fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. As India cope with the loss of their X-factor batter, former England captain Michael Vaughan questioned the fairness of continuing a high-stakes Test series with one team effectively reduced to ten players. In a social media post he said, "Clear and obvious injuries in the first innings of Tests we should allow like for like Subs .. we have concussion subs so surely we can have subs for injuries like Rishabhs..." Earlier on BBC's Test Match Special he had said , 'I don't like the fact that we've got four days left in the game — four days of action in what has been an incredible series — where we are going to have ten versus eleven.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Luxurious:2/3 BHK Apartments - At Prime Location of Chennai Brigade Morgan Heights Click Here Undo Calling for a rule change, Vaughan said the game should evolve to accommodate injury substitutions during the first innings. 'Once they brought in concussion subs, I was crying out, saying, 'Well, just have substitutions then in the first innings of a game.' That would be my stepping point,' Vaughan said. 'If someone breaks a hand or a foot, it's so evident that they are in real pain and can't carry on. I think it's very clear — you should be allowed a sub.' Vaughan's argument is based on fairness and player safety — if teams can field substitutes for concussions, why not for clearly visible injuries suffered during live play? However, not everyone agrees. Former England captain Alastair Cook was more cautious, pointing to the grey areas that could complicate such a rule. He cited scenarios where players could feign or exaggerate injuries to gain tactical advantage. 'Say we've just seen Pant walk off — he looks in all kinds of pain. And then it turns out it's not broken. There's nothing on the X-ray — it's just a bruise. Does he have to play on then?' Cook asked. 'If he's broken his foot, that's a different thing. But there will be cases where someone gets hit on the arm, says 'I can't move my hand,' and then it's just a bruise. So do you get replaced because of discomfort?' Pant's injury, incidentally, is the second one he has suffered this series. He had previously bruised a finger during the third Test at Lord's, which prevented him from donning the gloves. While the debate continues, one thing is clear: Pant's absence could hurt India — both strategically and emotionally. As Sai Sudharsan noted in the post-match briefing, 'He was in a lot of pain. His presence makes a difference — on and off the field.' The call for like-for-like substitutions in Test cricket — at least for 'clear and obvious' injuries — is bound to intensify after this incident. Whether the ICC chooses to act or not, Vaughan's proposal has put a new spotlight on a long-standing gap in the game's evolving rulebook. Shubman Gill Did Nothing Wrong, England Deliberately Wasted Time: Parthiv Patel

Parthiv Patel has backed Shubman Gill for his fierce reaction to England's time-wasting tactics during Day 3 of the Lord's Test. After India were bowled out for 387, an identical scoreline to England's first innings total of 387 towards the end of Day 3 of the 3rd Test at Lord's, Shubman Gill and Co. were hoping to squeeze in a couple of overs in their attempt to land an early blow given the tricky phase. As it turned out, India were only able to bowl one over of Jasprit Bumrah thanks to the tactics deployed by English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett that ate up the last few remaining minutes. It was clear that England were trying to waste time so as to not face another over. Crawley copped a blow on his hand and immediately called for the physio, drawing sarcastic applause from Indian players. A frustrated Gill engaged in a heated conversation with Crawley before firing a verbal volley, advising the England opener to 'grow some f***** b***s." Gill later explained his anger wasn't towards what England did on the field but the fact that they took 90 seconds to arrive in the middle and begin their innings. He said it wasn't in the spirit of the game. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has backed Gill for his reaction while accusing England and other teams of using the term 'spirit of the game' conveniently when it suits them. 'No, it's not (surprising)," Parthiv responded to a News18 CricketNext query on being surprised at Gill's aggression on Day 3. 'We've seen him doing this during IPL too. It's just that. This sport is about expressing your emotions as long as you are not crossing the line. And I don't think Shubman will cross the line at all." 'It was clear how slowly the English batters were walking in. And I feel that whether it is England, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa, they use this word 'spirit of the game' very, very conveniently whenever they feel they want to use it," he added. Patel said there was a deliberate attempt from England to waste time. 'There was nothing wrong in Shubman Gill asking in a press conference – asking English media or the public – whether it's ok to come to bat 90 seconds late – that's almost one over of Ravindra Jadeja. So that was a deliberate attempt, and on the field too. I don't think Shubham did anything wrong," Patel, who is associated with Gujarat Titans as assistant coach, said during the interaction facilitated by JioHotstar. Having observed Gill from close quarters at GT, a franchise that the star batter leads in the IPL, Patel feels the young captain is showing improvement and will only get better. India lost the series opener of their ongoing tour of England, a contest in which Gill made his Test captaincy debut. They bounced back with a record win in Birmingham before a close defeat at Lord's. 'As far as his (Gill's) captaincy is concerned, obviously, this is new to him. He's done (well), he's improving, there is no doubt about it. And at Gujarat Titans, whatever I've observed about him, he's been very assertive. He knows what he wants; he's very clear with his plans and ideas. So I'm sure with time, you will see very much improvement in his captaincy too," Patel said.
