Tech to track foreign SIMs, AI defence tools & more

Time of India3 days ago
New Delhi: Among the many technologies demonstrated on the opening day of the International Police Expo and Drone International Expo 2025 on Thursday at Bharat Mandapam was the Rapid Illegal Immigrants Detection System — a passive, standalone device designed to identify foreign SIM cards and mobile devices within a 50-metre radius.
The system is being pitched for use in tracking illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants, particularly in border villages and densely populated slum clusters.
T
he device claims to operate independently of mobile network providers and enables real-time detection of IMEIs and IMSIs, which are unique numbers identifying mobile phones or subscribers, making it useful during cordon-and-search operations.
Drones, AI-powered defence systems, anti-drone guns, armoured ambulances, and mobile forensic tools were also showcased at the event, which drew over 4,000 police and defence personnel on Thursday.

At one stall, a forensic analyst demonstrated an India-specific open-source intelligence tool. By entering a deceased person's phone number, the system generated a flowchart mapping linked UPI accounts, social media handles, email IDs, even photos, sourced from across platforms and the deep web and dark web.

Deepgaze AI was introduced as a defence against deepfakes, flagging manipulated audio, video and image files with forensic precision. Meanwhile, drone data recovery and data sanitization tools were also on show. Mobile laboratories, CCTV cameras and forensic scanners emphasised on holistically capturing evidence in the context of crash investigations, post-blast investigations, disaster recovery as well as crime scene investigations.
The expo is focused on developments in the fields of military equipment too, including both drones and anti-drone technology, arms, gear and vehicles. From pistols with technology designed to fire in darkness to armoured mine-protected vehicles capable of withstanding landmine blasts, the expo aimed to ensure armed forces envision a more efficient future.
"I was especially looking forward to seeing the weapons and new systems," said Vaishali Mane, superintendent of police, Pune, as she tested the weight and grip of a pistol at one of the stalls.
"We're here not just to browse, but to take stock, assess and provide as many suggestions as we can to ensure our own units stay updated with the best available options."
The attendees saw the technologies as a pathway to a future that is still being nurtured. CRPF personnel Bhopinder Singh said, "New technology is growing in all aspects: weapons, vehicles, gear. Some of these technologies we have heard of, but we are seeing them up-close for the first time here."
However, the forces also approached the new technology with a grounded perspective. "These tools show promise, but field readiness will take time," said CISF sub-inspector Ramashish Rana.
Delhi Traffic Police inspector Devi Lal called the technologies "a step toward modernising policing". With quick response vehicles built for efficient communication for the forces as well as mobile computers creating databases for logistical management in healthcare and govt, the expo underlined the importance of speed in policing and surveillance.

New UPI rules explained: Here's what they mean for your daily transactions

From August 1, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and others have started implementing new rules that restrict the number of backend requests users or apps can make in a day. These changes, introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), are designed to ease system congestion and improve the overall reliability of UPI services. Why UPI limits were introduced? NPCI observed that too many non-financial requests, such as repeated balance checks or account fetches were putting unnecessary strain on the UPI system. These actions do not move money, but still require the network's attention, especially during high-traffic periods. The new framework introduces daily limits to keep systems running efficiently. New UPI changes from August 1 · Bank balance checks: Limited to 50 times per app per day. Banks are now required to show your updated balance automatically after every successful transaction to reduce the need for frequent checks. · Linked account views: Restricted to 25 times per day per app. If the app fails to fetch account details, it must ask you to retry manually instead of attempting again on its own. · Autopay mandates: Will now be processed only outside peak hours, i.e., not between 10 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm. Each mandate will be executed once, with only three retry attempts allowed. · Merchant verification: Platforms can now fetch merchant verification data or security keys only once a day, and only during non-peak hours. · Status checks for payments: These must follow a staggered schedule, as previously advised by NPCI, to avoid spikes in backend traffic. UPI apps must monitor their traffic Apps and banks are now accountable for all automated background activity, whether triggered by the user or not. NPCI has directed platforms to stop blindly forwarding partner requests, especially during high-traffic hours. What happens if new UPI rules are not followed? All UPI apps were required to implement the changes by July 31, 2025. A compliance audit must be submitted to NPCI by August 31, 2025. Failure to comply could result in penalties, limited API access, or a ban on onboarding new users. These steps are expected to make the UPI experience smoother, particularly during times when most users are transacting.
