Rams set themselves up to make a big QB move in 2026
Next year marks two milestone moments in the recent history of the Los Angeles Rams: It's the 10th anniversary of the team's decision to move up to draft Jared Goff No. 1 overall in 2016 and it's the fifth anniversary of the blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford in 2021.
Could history repeat itself in 2026? The Rams have certainly set themselves up to make either of those types of moves for a quarterback after L.A. traded out of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft and picked up the Atlanta Falcons' first-round pick in 2026. And the last time they did, the Rams reached a Super Bowl within three years of the move.
Now, the Rams have two picks in what looks like a great quarterback draft. As we know from last two times a team traded up for the No. 1 overall pick, the starting point for any negotiations is two first-round picks. The Rams have that in their pocket now, and can use it at their leisure.
This is, of course, all speculative and only on the table if the Rams see themselves moving on from Matthew Stafford in the next few years. Since he'll be 37, that is more than likely sooner rather than later, especially after the offseason contract negotiations.
The 2026 draft is full of quarterbacks. Arch Manning (Texas), Drew Allar (Penn State), Cade Klubnik (Clemson), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina) and Nico Iamaleava (UCLA) are all projected first-round picks at this point in their careers. Others could join this group as the year unfolds, too. The Rams, armed with two first-rounders, are in prime position to move anywhere in the draft to snag one of them if they want.
However, the Rams could also go down the veteran trade market and use their picks as assets to acquire an established quarterback, like what they did with Stafford in 2021. This would take a bit more work and would require another team to want to move a quarterback. Less likely, but not impossible.
The Rams offer something a lot of other teams don't: Stability, good coaching, a big media market and a willingness to pay for talent. They did it with Stafford and could do it again in 2026.
The problem is there aren't many quarterbacks who could fit that bill. Things can change dramatically in a year, but unless feelings change between player and franchise, every franchise-caliber quarterback seems to be locked into their team for now. And the ones that aren't wouldn't be worth the Rams' picks.
If we had to guess, the candidates for potential movement in 2026 include Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert for a variety of reasons.
Lawrence hasn't lived up to his billing as a generational talent and the new Jacksonville Jaguars regime has Rams' connections (general manager James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen), similar to what happened with Stafford trade with the Detroit Lions and ex-Rams executive Brad Holmes. Maybe Jacksonville wants to go in a different direction under center?
Burrow will always be a name to follow given the Cincinnati Bengals' proclivity for frugality, although they just paid Burrow's receivers in Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Tagovailoa seems to always be on the hot seat, while Herbert might eventually get fed up the Los Angeles Chargers' inability to progress and head coach John Harbaugh may want to start over with a new hand-picked quarterback.
Again, this is all speculation with months to go before the 2025 season even starts. It's impossible to predict where the Rams will be a year from now and how they'll feel about their quarterback. But with those two first-round picks and a win-now attitude, the Rams are primed to make a quarterback splash either in the draft or with a veteran next year.

HC Sean McVay confirms Steelers' Aaron Rodgers could have signed with Rams

HC Sean McVay confirms Steelers' Aaron Rodgers could have signed with Rams Early offseason Aaron Rodgers to the Rams rumors have begun to resurface — and HC Sean McVay set the record straight. On Wednesday, Good Morning Football's Kyle Brandt asked McVay to clarify what really happened between the Rams and Rodgers this offseason — and this was his response: "I think our first priority, which was consistently communicated, was let's work something out with Matthew [Stafford]. We were very fortunate that it worked out that way. If that wasn't able to occur, then [signing Rodgers] was definitely a conversation and a possibility for us," McVay admitted. "I have a ton of respect for his body of work. I've gotten to know Aaron and really enjoy the conversations — the approach and the way he thinks about the game and in life. So, that was a possibility, but our first priority was always to get Matthew back." Pittsburgh was considered a major favorite to land Stafford when trade speculation surrounding the Rams QB ran rampant — before he ultimately signed a massive extension to remain in Los Angeles. It's crazy to imagine that there exists a possibility where Rodgers potentially signed with the Rams — and the Steelers may have been able to land Stafford. Russell Wilson Isn't the Future of New York Giants, But He's Helping Build It

Russell Wilson Isn't the Future of New York Giants, But He's Helping Build It originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson understands he's not the future of the organization—and at this point in his career, he is focused on being the best leader he can be for the team. Advertisement New York signed the 36-year-old signal caller to a one-year deal worth up to $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed, and he is expected to be the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart when the regular season begins. However, the Giants selected Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft—giving the Giants a potential future franchise quarterback. 'Jaxson's been great, man,' Wilson said. 'He's a great worker, great teammate. We're having fun, all of us. We have a really good quarterback room. Guys are so focused and working diligently every day. He's going to be an extremely, extremely good talent and everything else throughout his career.' The Giants are wisely allowing Dart to properly develop before handing him the keys to the offense. Dart will also have the opportunity to learn from a Super Bowl champion quarterback in Wilson. Advertisement 'I always share and I always think about communication,' Wilson said. 'I'm a big believer in communicating out loud, just, 'Here's what I'm thinking, here's what I'm saying.' You don't hold any information. I think that for us, it's always about us being the best that we can all be. 'And I think for me, when you have tremendous confidence in yourself, you have no problem sharing it with others. I think that's just how I've always believed.' Wilson's approach to mentoring Dart reflects maturity and professionalism—a testament to the type of leader he is. Wilson may not be the future of the franchise, but he is proving to be an invaluable part of the New York Giants' present. New York Giants' QB Competition Quietly Intensifies

New York Giants' QB Competition Quietly Intensifies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Giants have an imperfect yet intriguing quarterback situation in their building. New York's quarterback room consists of Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson, veteran gunslinger Jameis Winston, third-year quarterback Tommy DeVito, and rookie first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart. Advertisement Throughout the offseason, general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll have insisted Wilson will enter training camp as the team's starting quarterback. Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News suggested Wilson's recent underwhelming performance in OTAs could open the door to a competition for the team's starting quarterback job. 'So far this spring, with Wilson at quarterback, the Giants' first-team defense has looked like a much better unit than the offense," Leonard wrote. "...The Giants offense's operation with Wilson has not been smooth or consistently productive or explosive in any of the open practice sessions yet. And that's coming off a season when they ranked 30th in the NFL, scoring 16.1 points per game, having altered almost no personnel from that unit other than the QBs." While the Giants are expected to let Dart develop as a backup to start his career, Winston has thrown his hat into the ring to compete for the starting quarterback job. Advertisement Winston is a fearless quarterback who's always looking for the next big play on the field. Sometimes it leads to six points—other times, it's a pick-six. But if Daboll is building an offense that thrives on explosive plays, it might be hard to keep Winston off the field once the regular season begins.
