PSU banks looking better against private peers at least for next 2 quarters: Narendra Solanki

Time of India23-07-2025
Narendra Solanki
, Head Fundamental Research-Investment Services,
Anand Rathi Shares & Stock Brokers
, notes that
PSU banks
have outperformed
private banks
due to improved fundamentals like
interest margins
and
declining NPAs
. Consequently, PSU bank valuations are approaching those of private banks, trading around 1.5-1.7 times book value. Despite recent profit booking, PSU banks are expected to maintain their advantage over private peers for the next two quarters.
Eternal held on to the 11.5% gains yesterday. How are you looking at the stock movement from here on and how much more head do you believe can be there for the stock from these levels because it is at an all-time high level for this particular counter?
Narendra Solanki:
The results were good, especially on the part of Blinkit. The results were very exciting. The food delivery business has seen a moderation but the margins are slated to improve and the growth should continue to remain strong. So, on both fronts, we continue to see improvement for the stock going ahead, especially the Blinkit turnaround is very positive for the company and that has been reflecting in the prices of the stocks lately. So, we are still positive on the stock for the medium to long term.

What got the entire Nifty PSU basket so spooked because there were two consecutive days of big losses coming in over here. Select names like
Canara Bank
are down and out by about 3%. What is marring the entire Nifty PSU bank pack and what could be the reasons other than the earnings overhang on some from the Nifty PSU banks pack? Don't you think that the reaction is being a little overplayed right now?
Narendra Solanki:
It is a mix of two factors. One is definitely a reaction to the earnings and the other is historical performances of the past one to three months. Then the PSUs outperformed the private peers on the back of improving fundamentals like improvement in the interest margins, improvement in the profitabilities and the gradually declining NPA. So, the valuations have also started coming very close to their private peers where some PSU banks have started trading at around 1.5, 1.7 times book value.
The majority of the pack on an average was trading at around 0.9 to 1.1 price to book value while their private counterparts like larger private banks which once traded at higher than 3.5-4x book values are still trading at somewhere between 2.5 and 3 book value. So, the valuation gap has narrowed and it is a combination of near-term profit booking on back of
earnings reaction
. These both factors have played out but our view is that PSU as a pack is still looking better in comparison with the private peers at least for the next two quarters.

D2C brands lining up to list on quick commerce platforms in festive season

TIL Creatives In a sign of early festive season momentum, hundreds of emerging direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands are queuing up to list on quick-commerce platforms and ecommerce marketplaces to capitalise on an anticipated surge in demand, brand owners and industry executives told ET. This push comes despite quick commerce players increasing ad rates by 40-50% in key festive categories, as they ask brands to bid for visibility on their apps. In fiscal 2025, top quick commerce companies such as Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart together posted ad revenues of more than Rs 3,000 crore, according to industry executives. 'Brands are seeing good return on investment to advertise on these (10-minute delivery) platforms, with a large number of consumers adding quick commerce as buying preferences additionally to offline stores,' said Navin Khemka, president, South Asia, at WPP media spends are growing at over 20% year-on-year, albeit on a low base, he said. WPP Media handles media planning and buying for large brands including P&G, Coca-Cola, and Hero MotoCorp. GroupM's This Year Next Year (TYNY) report for 2025 forecasts that retail media – mainly advertising spends on online platforms – could represent 13.2% of total advertising expenditures in India this calendar, growing at 40% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2019. Overall, the report projects the Indian advertising sector to grow by 7% year-on-year to touch Rs 1,64,137 crore in 2025. 'We are very optimistic about the surge in traction on quick commerce platforms, more so during festive months when sales can peak,' said Akash Agrawalla, cofounder at spices and ready-to-cook foods startup ZOFF Foods. 'These platforms are neutralising the benefits of legacy brands in terms of consumer reach and discoverability.' New ad products In addition to nudging brands to increase their ad spending, quick-commerce platforms are rolling out new advertising products ahead of the four-month festive season to boost their include banners on the payment window – similar to checkout and payment zones in supermarkets – to induce impulse purchases for products such as chocolates and Minutes has rolled out contextual ads that help brands target high-intent customers with relevant products.'It's true that quick commerce platforms are increasingly investing to expand the category, and as part of that, they've been encouraging brands to scale up marketing investments,' said Varun Gupta, founder and CEO of smartwatches and wireless earphones brand Boult Audio. 'We see this not as a demand, but as a signal that the ecosystem is maturing and there's a shared opportunity to drive consumer awareness and adoption.'He, however, told ET that Boult would follow ad spend discipline and continue to allocate a share of its revenue for marketing. 'With the natural growth we've seen on these platforms, our absolute marketing spends have already scaled up by 20-25% organically,' Gupta added. ET had reported on July 23 that quick commerce companies are ramping up pressure on brands and sellers to boost ad spending on the platforms, as they chase high-margin revenue streams to contain mounting losses. Swiggy Instamart has rolled out a three-tier onboarding system, asking sellers to pick from packages priced between Rs 4.5 lakh and Rs 9 lakh. The amount can be spent on ads over a three-month period. Zepto has been asking new and small brands to commit Rs 2 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh a month on ads, depending on brands and Ltd-owned Blinkit charges Rs 25,000 per stock-keeping unit (SKU) per state as an onboarding fee, with sellers facing strong nudges to increase ad spends after listing their executives said the push from platforms to increase ad spends was primarily focused on smaller brands – with large companies typically having pre-agreed contracts on their marketing spends.'Given the strong response to mid-season ecommerce sales, we expect demand on online channels this year to outpace last year,' founder of a consumer electronics brand said. Rajesh Bhosale's 2 top trading ideas: TCS & Ashok Leyland

Rajesh Bhosale , Technical Analyst, Angel One , suggests buying Tata Consultancy Services , despite its underperformance. The stock is at a multi-year support level, indicating a potential bounce. Ashok Leyland is another pick from the auto sector. A bullish reversal pattern suggests positive movement. Targets are set at Rs 3,100 for TCS and Rs 130 for Ashok Leyland. How do you look at the market movement right now? Sectors are trying to catch up and momentum is being built in the market so far. What is the support according to you and where do you see resistance in today's trade? Rajesh Bhosale: Today we definitely saw some respite in the market after the last five weeks of consolidation or selling pressure. In fact, both Nifty and Bank Nifty are trading at a crucial juncture. Multi-month lows are placed somewhere around 24,500 for the Nifty where May and June swing lows were seen. For the Bank Nifty we are seeing support around 55,000 which coincides with daily 89 EMA. Both key indices are at key support and if we see some key derivative data, last week the long-short ratio plunged. Markets are now at key supports and are a bit oversold. So, as long as 24,500- 24,600 holds, one can have a stock specific action. On the higher side, 24,850, 24,900 would be the resistance for the Nifty whereas 56,300, 56,500 would be the resistance for the Bank Nifty. I want to understand from you the Bank Nifty play here because you mentioned the resistance level of 56,500. In today's trade, the Bank Nifty particularly was not participating earlier and now it has joined the party. How should one play till policy on Bank Nifty and also do you have any specific stock recommendation? Rajesh Bhosale : As you highlighted, we are not seeing any major traction, but on the hourly charts, we are seeing some positive divergence and double bottom formation and dips towards 55,500 on the spot levels, could be taken as a buying opportunity. On the higher side, 56,000 would be the resistance followed by 56,300. So, Bank Nifty is on a support, some kind of positive divergence is happening and since it is oversold, a dip should be taken as a buying opportunity for a trading bounce towards 56,000 to 56,300 levels. We are eyeing the RBI credit policy this week and the rate sensitive baskets will be on the focus radar. But apart from that, what are the stocks which you have brought for us? What are the trading ideas for the day? Rajesh Bhosale: My first buy call is a contra bet on underperforming stock – TCS. It has been an underperformer. In fact, the entire IT space has been an underperformer. But if we see the chart structure of TCS, it is now placed at a multi-year support level. If we see the RSI smoothened indicator, it has slipped towards the levels of six points. So it is deeply oversold and at a very crucial support. So, the stock is showing good risk-reward at the current juncture. We are expecting a trading bounce or maybe a strong move from current levels. So, with a stop loss of Rs 2,977, TCS can be bought. We are expecting the first target of Rs 3,100 if the momentum continues towards the Rs 3,150-3,180 level. So, TCS looks positive at the current juncture. Live Events You Might Also Like: Take it one day at a time; not very bullish or very bearish at this point in time: Mihir Vora Since TCS was one underperforming stock, the other stock I would pick from the performing sector, the auto space. The second buy call is on Ashok Leyland. On Friday, we saw a bullish reversal hammer pattern on the daily chart with prices holding on to 89 EMA and today we are seeing a follow-up buying in Ashok Leyland with a stop loss of Rs 119, Ashok Leyland can be bought. We are expecting a near-term target of Rs 130 in this counter.
