Shohei Ohtani and his agent face lawsuit over $240 million Hawaii real estate project
Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, allegedly used their Hollywood clout to squeeze a real estate broker and developer out of a $240 million luxury housing development, a new lawsuit filed in Hawaii circuit court claims.
The plaintiffs, developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and broker Tomoko Matsumoto, contend that they were unlawfully pulled from 'The Vista at Mauna Kea Resort' after securing Ohtani to promote the project.
Nez Balelo's demands allegedly led to partners' ouster
After Shohei Ohtani joined the project, Balelo began pushing for increasingly favorable terms, which, according to the complaint, led their business partner, Kingsbarn Realty Capital, to quietly sideline Hayes and Matsumoto from their roles.
According to the suit, Ohtani and Balelo, who have been Ohtani's representative for free-agent negotiations, are guilty of "tortious interference and unjust enrichment" after having "been brought into the venture for only promotional value" before upending the plaintiffs' positions "for no reason other than their own financial self-interest."

Shohei Ohtani's endorsement role and broader implications
In 2023, Ohtani was enlisted as a celebrity spokesperson for the project and had already chosen a home site, marking the development's "first resident." The development was 14 custom homes on the Hapuna Coast of Hawaii, aimed at U.S.
and Japanese buyers, averaging $17.3 million each. They were sold with expensive graphics of Ohtani, posh amenities, and top-of-the-line branding.

Home minister calls addiction to online gaming worse than drugs, govt plans fresh curbs
Bengaluru: The govt will decide on regulating the online gaming sector based on recommendations of a committee headed by IPS officer Pranab Mohanty, home minister G Parameshwara told the assembly Tuesday. The committee, set up in April, is expected to submit its report in Sept. Responding to a question from BJP's S Suresh Kumar during question hour, Parameshwara said he had met representatives of online gaming companies and sought their cooperation in framing regulations to safeguard public. Ex-minister Kadu gets 3 months in jail for assault on IAS officer
Mumbai: Observing that, however noble the intention, one cannot address a public servant in such a manner or threaten him with harm to life or reputation, a special court for MPs and MLAs on Tuesday convicted and sentenced former MLA and former state minister Bacchu alias Omprakash Babarao Kadu to three months' simple imprisonment for assaulting and criminally intimidating an IAS officer in 2018. The incident occurred when Kadu, upset about the 'Mahapariksha' conducted by the Maharashtra IT Corporation, attacked Pradeep P, then director of the information and technology department, an IAS officer. "Entering the cabin of a senior public officer, engaging in heated arguments, lifting the officer's iPad, and gesturing to hit him clearly amounts to 'assault' within the meaning of Section 351 (of) IPC. This was not a casual act, but one that conveyed the intention to cause harm, sufficient to constitute the offence of assault," special judge Satyanarayan R Navander said. The judge further noted that "merely because the accused was a sitting MLA, he did not have any licence to deter a public servant by criminally intimidating him or by making an assault in his office. That does not mean that any representative of the people would go to such an officer and attack him violently, thereby intimidating the officer and disrupting his business. " The judge further said that considering the nature of the public duty of officers, Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) is designed to protect them from assault or criminal force while they are performing their duties without fear of intimidation or violence. "The object of punishment as such is not only to give understanding to the accused but also to the prospective wrongdoers that the office of administrative officers should be respected and legal ways be chosen for addressing the grievances," the judge said. E-khata chaos: Helplines of no help, property owners in Bengaluru at their wits' end
Bengaluru: Flat owners, already caught in BBMP's e-khata chaos, have a new headache: Navigating the civic body's own helplines. Instead of offering solutions, the helplines and officials are trapping e-khata holders in a maddening loop that ends with nothing. Take the case of its much-publicised helpline number 1533 or WhatsApp number 9480683695. For citizens struggling with discrepancies in parking lot dimensions, these helplines are supposed to provide relief. But, not so in reality. Anand Kumar, a senior citizen from Kanakapura Road, said: "I wanted to file objections and contacted the local BBMP revenue official, but he told me to approach special commissioner Munish Moudgil in the BBMP head office. When I went to the central office at Hudson Circle, I was told to call the BBMP helpline. Initially, the helplines did not work. When someone finally answered, I was again redirected to the local revenue official. I am only going around in circles with no solution at sight." In the second attempt, the reporter pressed 1, but the loop continued until the call was dropped again. The entire sequence was recorded on video. Later, at 4:57pm, the e-khata helpline (9480683695) was tried. A recorded message asked the caller to "hold the line" as the line was busy. After waiting nearly seven minutes, the call disconnected automatically. A second attempt at 5:21pm met with the same fate. Residents say this is not an isolated glitch but a persistent failure. "It's impossible to get through. I've tried more than 20 times in the last week," said Shalini Rao, a resident of JP Nagar. She added, "Even if you're lucky enough to connect, you either get disconnected midway or are stuck in endless loops." Ramesh Gowda from Yelahanka, a sports teacher at a private school, recounted a similar experience: "I needed to clarify a mismatch in my property details. The helpline was my first option, but after repeated failures, I had to take half-a-day's leave to go to the revenue office, where I was told to come back another day because the official concerned was busy." With citizens' frustration mounting, civic activists said BBMP must urgently overhaul its grievance-redress system. "A helpline that doesn't connect is worse than no helpline at all — it erodes public trust," said Vinod Kumar, member of a residents' welfare association.
