Tesla's "fully autonomous" robotaxis made their debut in Austin, Texas this weekend. On Sunday, June 22, a small fleet of Tesla's taxis began offering rides to people in the state's buzzing capital, according to Reuters.
It marks the first time Tesla's self-driving cars picked up paying riders. The launch was a "culmination of a decade of hard work," Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote in a post on his social media platform X.
"Super congratulations to the @Tesla_AI software & chip design teams on a successful @Robotaxi launch!!" Musk added.
Tesla did the trial run with 10 vehicles in the a neighborhood called South Congress, reported Reuters. While no one was in the driver's seat, a front-seat rider acted as a "safety monitor" during the trial. It is unclear how much control safety monitors had over the car.
Some people, however, gathered to show their disapproval of the new self-driving taxis. Photos captured protesters gathered on Saturday with signs that stated, "No Robotaxi in Austin."

Culver City Is Losing a Hand-Pulled Noodle Destination

Bang Bang Noodles, a Chinese hand-pulled noodle shop, is closing its Culver location in the Citizen Public Market at the end of June. The restaurant, which specializes in Xi'an-style biang-biang mian, announced the closure in an Instagram post on June 22. Bang Bang's Downtown LA location will remain open. Bang Bang Noodles was founded as a pop-up in early 2020 by chef Robert Lee, who had previously worked at restaurants in San Sebastian, New York City, and Los Angeles. In 2023, Lee opened the first permanent location for Bang Bang Noodles at Citizen Public Market, bringing his signature tingly cumin lamb noodles tossed in chile oil to the neighborhood. In the years since opening, the menu has expanded beyond just the cumin lamb noodles to include Xi'an tomato noodles and Szechuan garlic noodles. After Bang Bang Noodles closes in Culver, those looking for a great bowl of hand-pulled noodles should try Noodle Art in the Original Farmers Market or LAN Noodle, which operates locations in West Hollywood and the San Gabriel Valley. Shiku, a homestyle Korean stand in Grand Central Market from the team behind Baroo, is donating its proceeds from June to August to non-profits that support immigrants in Los Angeles. 50 percent of profits from this summer will be donated to the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, National Day Laborer Organizing Network, and the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA). Frogtown Mexican seafood destination Loreto is popping up at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel for the summer. The pop-up will take over the terrace at Calabra between June 20 and September 1. Expect crudos, ceviches, and seafood-topped tostadas, paired with mezcalitas, and more. ECB's Panetta says no reason to fear banks' liquidity drain from digital euro

MILAN (Reuters) -The digital euro will be designed in a way that poses no threat to the overall liquidity held by the banking system, top European Central Bank policymaker Fabio Panetta said, adding that the ECB could anyway counter any hit to liquidity. Speaking to students at the annual Young Factor conference in Milan, Panetta said a digital euro was a necessity because the digitalisation of the economy risked marginalising the role of central bank money, leading to a riskier and more unstable economic environment. Under the digital euro project, euro zone residents would be able to transfer part of the money in their bank accounts into digital euro accounts with the ECB. To avoid depriving commercial banks of an excessive amount of deposits, the project envisages capping individual savers' digital euro holdings. Panetta said such limits would be set in a "conservative" way, calculating what would be the impact on the aggregate level of liquidity of the maximum amount of cash each saver could shift into digital euros to make sure there is no impact on the economy. "Anyway, be aware that even if the digital euro drained liquidity away from banks and turned bank deposits into central bank liabilities, the level of liquidity in the system is a decision of the European Central Bank. The ECB can offset any reduction in liquidity," Panetta said. "It's like real liquidity. Like water in a tank. Whatever amount spills out, we can refill it. The digital euro is being built in a way that ... limits outflows from bank deposits. On top of that, the ECB could always offset any impact."
