Vehicular movement hit by twin strike
The forum of 10 central trade unions and their associates, which include, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), HMS, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC), Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) and United Trade Union Congress (UTUC) participated in the nation-wide protest. The Opposition Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) extended their support to the protest of trade unions.
Similarly, the drivers of different transportation vehicles including buses, taxis and trucks resorted to the cease work protest since Tuesday morning demanding welfare measures for the drivers in the State. The protesters staged demonstrations in different places and blocked several roads including national highways in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Bargarh, Bhadrak, Balasore, Bolangir and Sambalpur.
Due to the protest by trade unions and thousands of drivers, vehicular movement has been severely affected in the State, said a police officer. A large number of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of major roads and NHs as the protesters picketed on the roads. The protesters were also seen staging a protest blocking the railway tracks in Bhubaneswar station. The commuters remained stranded in the bus stands across the State.
Several Central government offices, banks, business establishments and educational institutions were also partially affected in some places including Rayagada, Berhampur, Nabarangpur and Gajapati districts, police said. Fuel stations in Bhubaneswar remained closed as the trade union members picketed before the petrol pumps. However, the offices and educational institutions functioned normally in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and some other cities.
Trade union leader Sura Jena, who was leading a protest near the railway station here, alleged that the Narendra Modi-led Central government is exploiting the labourers of the country by imposing the Labour Codes. 'The Central government is privatising Central PSUs, airports and other public properties one after another and failed to control inflation and unemployment, which is at its peak,' he said.
Among major demands, the Trade Unions demanded immediate rollback of the four Labour Codes, Rs 26,000 per month wage for workers, reinstating the old pension scheme and strengthening protections for workers in both organised and unorganised sectors.
Under the banner of Odisha Drivers' Mahasangha, thousands of drivers of buses, trucks, vans, taxis, auto rickshaws and other commercial vehicles have been staging 'steering down' protest as their talk with the State government remained inconclusive.
The protesting drivers held different meetings for over four hours on Tuesday night with the Transport department officers and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena.
Aditya Prasad Behera, treasurer of the association, said, 'No decision has been taken yet. Our president will announce if the strike will be called off.'

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Wednesday derided and mocked the Opposition for 'alerting' the government about the China-Pakistan fusion, particularly during the recent military face-off under Operation Sindoor, thereby posing a grave threat to India's national security. 'Today, China gurus claim that China-Pakistan combo is a serious threat, but it all started with the giving away of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and then several strategic partnerships between them, including Pakistan-China treaty of China friendship (2005), Gwadar airport deal (2013),' he pointed out. Further blaming the Congress-led dispensation for turning a blind eye to Hambantota port, he informed the House that the then government said it was 'no matter of concern' despite it posing as a strategic threat to India's maritime security. Responding sharply to P. Chidambaram's question on what transpired during his recent China visit, the Minister took a swipe, saying, 'unlike others, he didn't discuss anything secretly'. 'We discussed terrorism, de-escalation, fostering relationship based on mutual respect and mutual trust and mutual sensitivity,' he said, highlighting the Modi government's firm stance on foreign policy. He also thanked all the members of the Parliament, including Shashi Tharoor, Kanimozhi and others who stood together and presented a united front during India's diplomatic outreach after the operation, and exposed Pakistan's brazen hand in global terror.

Russian missiles hit Ukrainian army training ground, killing at least 3 soldiers
Kyiv, Jul 30 (AP) A Russian missile hit a Ukrainian army training ground, killing three soldiers and wounding 18 others, authorities said, in the latest attack to embarrass military officials as they struggle to make up a severe manpower shortage in the nearly three-and-a-half-year war. The Russian Defence Ministry said that the strike killed or wounded about 200 Ukrainian troops. The ministry said that Ukraine's 169th training centre near Honcharivske in the Chernihiv region was hit with two Iskander missiles, one armed with multiple submunitions and another with high explosives. Meanwhile, Russia continued its stepped-up aerial campaign against Ukrainian civilian targets, launching 78 attack drones overnight, including up to eight newly developed jet-powered drones, Ukraine's air force said Wednesday. At least five people were wounded. Civilian casualties The UN mission in Ukraine says there has been a worsening trend in civilian casualties from Russian attacks this year, with 6,754 civilians killed or injured in the first half of 2025 — representing a 54 per cent increase from the same period in 2024. Since Russia launched an all-out invasion of neighbouring Ukraine on February 24, 2022, at least 13,580 Ukrainian civilians, including 716 children, have been killed, according to the UN. In an effort to stop that, US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he's giving Russian President Vladimir Putin until August 8 for peace efforts to make progress or Washington will impose punitive sanctions and tariffs. Western leaders have accused Putin of dragging his feet in US-led peace efforts in an attempt to capture more Ukrainian land. Recent attacks under investigation Ukrainian forces are mostly hanging on against a grinding summer push by Russia's bigger army, though the Russian Defence Ministry has claimed some recent small advances at places along the 1,000-kilometre front line. Ukrainian ground forces acknowledged that a Russian strike hit a military training ground in the Chernihiv region of northern Ukraine, but its casualty report differed widely from one issued by Moscow. The new law allows those who want to contribute their experience and skills, particularly in noncombat or specialized roles. In February, Ukraine's Defence Ministry began offering new financial and other benefits that it hopes will attract men between the ages of 18 and 24 to military service. Men in that age group are exempt from the country's draft, which covers men between 25 and 60 years old. He urged the temple administration to alert both the Odisha state government and the central government and also called for diplomatic intervention with Chinese authorities to put an end to the sale of such disrespectful items. 'This is not just an isolated case. There is a growing pattern where sacred Jagannath-related terminology like Mahaprasad and Patitapaban Bana are being misused for profit. Though steps have been initiated to legally protect these religious symbols and terms, the process needs to be accelerated," Pujapanda told Sambad. Former MP and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Amar Patnaik also spoke out against the product.
