Cornish student pioneers new scholarship funding

Yahoo30-03-2025

A student from Cornwall has become the first to benefit from a new travel scholarship funded by a late university lecturer who was also from Cornwall.
Finn Woodrow, from the Rame Peninsula, was awarded the Gavin Pomeroy Travel Scholarship as part of his architecture studies at the University of Plymouth.
The university said Mr Pomeroy, who taught at the establishment for more than 30 years, left £50,000 in his will for a scholarship "to support students looking to supplement their learning".
Mr Woodrow, who travelled to Tbilisi, Georgia, to study how politics influenced the design of houses in the region, said the experience was "empowering".
He said: "As a minimally-travelled person, the chance to experience a new place, especially with developed reasoning behind it, was an amazing experience.
"Tbilisi showed me that cities, like the countryside that I grew up in Cornwall, could also be places of poetic dwelling.
"[It] empowered me to dive deeply into an area of interest that I otherwise would not have had the chance to do; fundamentally changing my understanding of cities and architecture."
The university said the initiative, for second-year students, could be used "for anything related to travel", as per Mr Pomeroy's request when he passed away in 2022.
It said: "His entire teaching career was spent at the University of Plymouth, where he lectured until retiring in 1999.
"He loved the arts as a whole, enjoying sketching, painting, music and poetry.
"A keen traveller himself, Gavin wanted the money to support students' passion for the programme, with up to £1,000 available to apply for each year."

Passenger spots volcano erupting from plane window

A Devon man has said it was "fascinating" to watch Mount Etna erupting during his flight home - a day after his wife had run up the volcano. Jon and Jo Meek, from Moretonhampstead, had been visiting Sicily for the European Masters Off Road Running Championship. Mrs Meek - who was sleeping while her husband watched the plumes of smoke from his window - ran in the competition which took place the day before the eruption. "I can't actually believe it because you fly out for one race and if the volcano had erupted and we couldn't race I would have been pretty gutted," she said. "Literally the day before, I ran up to the cable car station and back down as part of the race and we thought absolutely nothing of the volcano." The couple were separated on the plane and were both sat on opposite sides of the aircraft. "I have to confess I was fast asleep on the airplane... but Jon however had a great view," said Mrs Meek. Mr Meek said the experience was "exciting" but had the race been 24 hours later Mrs Meek would "have been in the thick of it". "I was just lucky I was sat in a window seat and overlooking it as we flew off so it's an amazing sight," he said. "I think it was just fascinating... it's exciting to watch. "When we took off and I had the view over it I looked over and she was fast asleep so she slept through the whole thing," he added. Teen paddleboarders rescued in fading light

Two teenagers on a paddleboard have been rescued after getting into trouble off the Cornish coast, rescuers say. Looe RNLI was alerted about the stranded teenagers off Downderry at 20:57 BST on Saturday after onlookers reported seeing them waving their paddles "in distress". Once at the scene, Looe RNLI said it found two teenagers a "fair way out to sea and unable to return to shore in the fading light". An RNLI spokesperson said the pair were taken back to the lifeboat station to warm up and await the arrival of their parents. Funding boost for Cornish trail extension project

A popular Cornish trail's potential extension has taken a step forward after a funding was secured for part of the project. North Cornwall MP Ben Maguire said a large portion of the £200,000 funding needed for a feasibility study to look into extending the Camel Trail to Camelford had been secured from the government and Cornwall Council. The 18-mile (29km) path used by about 400,000 cyclists and walkers every year currently runs along a disused railway line from Padstow to Wenfordbridge. Maguire said extending the trail felt like a "no-brainer" and the idea has also been welcomed by traders who felt it could boost business in Camelford. He said it was "very early days" as more funding would be needed before the feasibility study could take place. If the project does happen, he said it would be a "brilliant boost for north Cornwall, for Camelford and actually Cornwall as a whole" for a "fantastic multi-use trail that's already a huge success story". More news stories for Cornwall Listen to the latest news for Cornwall Kelly Arries, director of Wadebridge-based Bridge Bike Hire, said the trail was a "massive asset" locally and extending it to Camelford would be a great idea. She said: "I think it's really exciting and Camelford has loads to gain from it." Jamie Squire, landlord of The Mason Arms in Camelford, said he was slightly sceptical about where the trail would go in the town, but thought it would help encourage more people to visit. "I think it would bring more people into Camelford because at the minute it's just passing trade," he said. Mark Burnett, Cornwall Councillor for Camelford and Boscastle, said he fully supported the idea. Burnett said: "It makes perfect sense because part of the name Camelford is in the name of the Camel Trail. "Anything that brings footfall and increased tourism into the town using the shops, the cafes, the pubs and other facilities has got to be welcomed in my view."
