LONDON (AP) — Newly promoted Premier League club Leeds added Slovenia standout Jaka Bijol to its defense ahead of the second-tier champion's return to the top level.

Bijol has played 63 times for Slovenia, including all four games at the 2024 European Championship.
He helped shut out the England attack led by Harry Kane and Portugal's attack led by Cristiano Ronaldo in 0-0 draws. Slovenia was eliminated by Portugal in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout.
Slovenia starts a 2026 World Cup qualifying group in September in a competitive group with Switzerland, Sweden and Kosovo.
Leeds, whose United States ownership group is led by 49ers Enterprises, starts its Premier League season hosting Everton on Aug. 18.

Daniel James close to signing new Leeds contract

Leeds United are close to finalising a new contract with Daniel James. The 27-year-old's exisiting deal expires in June 2026 and, after arguably the best season of his career, securing his future was among the priorities at Elland Road this summer. James is currently on holiday and yet to sign the paperwork but all parties involved in the negotiations are confident this will be resolved over the coming weeks. Advertisement Incoming transfers are dominating United executives' schedules, but the winger will be invited in to sign when the right moment emerges. The Wales international joined Leeds in August 2021 for £25million ($33.9m), two-and-a-half years after a transfer from Swansea City fell through with James already inside Elland Road. He struggled to make an impression in his first season in West Yorkshire and was then sent on loan to Fulham in 2022-23. James was with the west London side as Leeds slipped out of the Premier League in May 2023, but he returned to play a major part in the run to 190 points across two Championship campaigns under Daniel Farke. Forty-one goal involvements across 79 league appearances followed over the past two seasons. In 2024-25, James was named Leeds United's Player of the Year, shortlisted for EFL Championship Player of the Season and PFA Championship Players' Player of the Year, as well as making the EFL Championship Team of the Season. This contract would mark a remarkable turnaround in James's fortunes and reputation at Elland Road. As his loan to Fulham in 2022 underlined, things were not going his way at all in Leeds. James was used plenty by Marcelo Bielsa, but it was often as a striker when the team's other options were injured. It's not a position which has ever looked like suiting the winger and he never found any meaningful form, though the same could be said for his time with Fulham too. It was not a loan which put James in the shop window and there were never any murmurings about him moving on when Leeds were relegated. The drop has proved to be everything James needed. Yes, he was now facing inferior opposition, but the Championship gave James the platform to rebuild himself and his momentum. Injuries have cruelly stopped him in his tracks on a few occasions under Farke, but the German has got the best from the winger. Advertisement James has found a killer instinct in the final third and was rightly in the conversation for player of the year awards last month. Of those Leeds players with contracts expiring in 2026, James was the standout name that needed to be tied down. The big question now is whether James can keep those goals and assists flowing in the top flight.

Liverpool risk losing key centre-back over contract stand-off

Konaté Contract Stalemate Raises Big Questions for Liverpool Ibrahima Konaté's Liverpool Future in Doubt Liverpool fans woke up to troubling headlines, as The Guardian reported that Ibrahima Konaté is 'disappointed with Liverpool contract offers as talks stall.' On the latest episode of The Daily Red Podcast by Anfield Index, Guy Drinkel delivered a detailed and impassioned analysis of the situation. Konaté, affectionately referred to as 'Ibu' by fans, is entering the final year of his current deal, and negotiations to extend his stay appear far from resolved. Drinkel didn't hold back. 'We just have to get it done,' he insisted. 'People have fitness concerns, but you do have to roll the dice with players who are world class.' He acknowledged those concerns but pointed to the French defender's undeniable quality when fit. 'We saw the first half of last season, he was just as good as Van Dijk when fully fit and in the groove.' Pay Konaté What He's Worth Money is at the heart of the matter. Rumours suggest Konaté wants £200,000 per week, roughly what Virgil van Dijk was on before his latest renewal. 'If we've got 26-year-old Ibu and we contract him for another five years and he goes on to 31… 200 grand a week is nothing,' said Drinkel. 'Especially with the growing wages, the Saudi influence, the Real Madrid power plays.' Photo: IMAGO Advertisement He questioned the club's hesitation, particularly given the precedent of paying Thiago Alcântara a high wage package upon arrival. 'If he's anywhere like 250 [thousand] and below… just get it done,' Drinkel urged. 'I know we're not businessmen, but as a fan, like I don't care if we're saving an extra 20 grand a week. Just get Ibu paid.' Replacement Talk Sparks Anxiety While links to Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi offer an exciting alternative, they also signal potential unease about Konaté's future. 'Is Guéhi more the Quansah replacement or is he seen as the Ibu replacement?' Drinkel asked. 'It's a scary thought.' Photo: IMAGO Advertisement He did express admiration for Guéhi, calling him 'the best English centre-back' and noting his prime age at 24. But the idea of having to replace Konaté due to avoidable contractual failings clearly rankled. 'It would be so disappointing… if Ibu is literally wanting to stay or is willing to stay… and we're just not paying him enough, that's more of an annoying thing than Trent,' he said, referencing the long-running saga surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold's Real Madrid ambitions. Konaté Belongs at the Heart of Liverpool's Defence The depth of Drinkel's belief in Konaté was impossible to ignore. 'For me personally, I think Ibu is one of the top five centre-backs in the world off the top of my head,' he said. 'In the Premier League, I wouldn't trade him for anyone. Not a single soul.' Photo: IMAGO He even went further, painting a vision of Liverpool's future defence with Konaté at its core: 'If we sign Guéhi … and keep Ibu… we can keep [those] three centre-backs for the rest of Van Dijk's contract.' For Drinkel, that scenario represents ideal succession planning and squad building. Letting Konaté slip through the cracks, in contrast, would be 'really, really annoying.'

Transfer news: Gittens to Chelsea, Eze to Tottenham Hotspur — Reports

The summer transfer window has already provided some huge deals (Florian Wirtz, Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap to name a few) and the reports just keep on coming. MORE — Full list of Premier League ins and outs this summer Below we take a look at some of the latest transfer reports involving Premier League clubs. Gittens to Chelsea back on? It appeared that the deal for Jamie Gittens to head to Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund was off and the English winger could be heading to Bayern Munich instead. But a report from The Athletic says that Chelsea are closing in on signing Gittens, 20, after a breakthrough in talks with Dortmund. Gittens would be the direct replacement for Jadon Sancho, who has gone back to parent club Manchester United, and the talented English winger is exactly the kind of player Enzo Maresca wants. He's direct, works hard up and down the flank and has the ability to cut inside and float around as one of the three attacking players in his system. Per the report, Gittens would sign a seven-year deal with Chelsea. Spurs set to move on to Eze? With the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, it appears Spurs may go in a different direction with their hunt for a new chief creative talent: Eberechi Eze. According to talkSPORT Spurs have now turned their attention to Eze. The England international has been a star for Crystal Palace over the last few years and was crucial in their FA Cup win as he's taken the Eagles to Europe. But Eze, 26, knows that big clubs will be circling for him this summer and this move would be a very good fit. The system new Spurs boss Thomas Frank plays would be ideal for Eze and he will get the best out of him, just as he has did with Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa at Brentford. If Eze is to leave Palace for one of the Premier League's big boys this summer then joining Frank at Spurs should be his top priority.
