This year's Comrades Marathon not only saw thousands of runners pounding the pavement from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, but it also became a powerful catalyst for change, raising over R6 million through the Comrades Marathon Association's Amabeadibeadi Charity Drive.
The funds generated during Sunday's event will benefit six deserving charities, each represented by passionate participants aimed at making a difference in their communities.
Since its inception in 1996, the Amabeadibeadi initiative has been integral in supporting vital organisations, including the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC), SANParks Honorary Rangers, Community Chest, Rise Against Hunger, Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT), and Childline KwaZulu-Natal.
CHOC has emerged as a leading beneficiary this year with R2.5 million raised, thanks in large part to the enthusiasm of the runners known as the "CHOC Cows."

Manager Jayde McCarthy expressed pride in the fundraising effort.
'We did super well with our cows being absolutely amoozing!' she said. McCarthy highlighted the remarkable contribution of fundraiser Ida van de Wetering, who single-handedly secured R165,000.
'It's incredibly motivating to consider that we are running on behalf of children battling cancer,' she added.

This year marked the second occasion that SANParks Honorary Rangers participated in the marathon, with representative Peter Zietsman sharing insights about their commitments: 'Due to financial limitations, we have certain capital expenditure requirements that cannot be met. Events like these allow us to fill those gaps for SANParks to achieve its objectives in terms of community responsibilities.'
Their watering hole, featuring two grand blow-up elephants, served as a reminder of their mission to protect South Africa's natural heritage.
Community Chest's executive director, Gordon McDonald, also spoke passionately about their purpose for the funds raised.
'The money will be spent on early childhood development because there's a critical problem with children not receiving enough early education,' he explained.

With a focus on offering nutritious food and stimulating educational programmes, Community Chest supports approximately 7,800 children daily in vulnerable areas around Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
Their refreshment station, strategically placed 1.5 km from the finish line, became a point of encouragement for runners along the challenging route.

Comrades Marathon proposal goes horribly wrong!

A Comrades Marathon runner's live televised proposal didnt go the way he anticipated. After crossing the finish line, the man proposed to his girlfriend, a fellow runner. The moment was caught on camera. In a clip posted on social media, a Comrades Marathon runner from Johannesburg's Fitness From Africa running club was seen proposing to his partner. The runner and his girlfriend had just crossed the finish line when he suddenly dropped down on one knee. 'Will you marry me?' he asked his partner – both of whom are green number veterans – who nervously laughed. She then whispered in the man's ear: 'Not on TV, please!' @rofhiwaroro3 #comradesmarathon2025 #running #fyp #proposal ♬ original sound – Rofhiwa The live moment was aired as part of SuperSport's Comrades Marathon coverage. The presenter asked the woman, 'I don't know if she said yes,' before she pushed his microphone out of his face. In the comments section of the video, many South Africans felt sorry for the runner being publicly rejected. Others chastised the man for humiliating his partner on live television. While the veteran Comrades Marathon runner did not get the results he hoped for – at least in the love department – another did when he popped the question to his partner, who was cheering from the sidelines. @nikitafortmann02 another day celebrating strangers 🥹🥹❤️❤️ #comradesmarathon #tiktoksa #proposal ♬ Ordinary (Wedding Version) – Alex Warren Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Fresh under pressure – Man conquers Comrades dressed in 13kg can of Shield deodorant.

Comrades Marathon 2025 had no shortage of tough runners, but one stood out like no other. LucQuevauvilliers, a five-time Comrades finisher, took on the 89.98km challenge this year, wearing a full-body 13kg Shield Can Man suit, turning heads and gaining loud cheers of support. The partnership between Luc and Shield, one of South Africa's most trusted deodorant brands, served two important purposes – to put the products movement activated technology to use, and highlight its promise that when you bring the heat, Shield brings the freshness – and to help Luc support conservation efforts in South Africa, a cause close to his heart. 'Luc embodies the essence of what Shield stands for, confidence in motion, pushing limits, and doing it all with freshness,' said Aneska Narandas, Brand Manager for Shield South Africa. 'We're incredibly proud to have supported him on this wild journey, especially because it also shines a light on the incredible work that SANParks does.' Despite the heat, the hills, and the extra 13kgs on his body, Luc crossed the finish line confident, dry, and still in good spirits. 'This was one of the most intense things I've ever done,' said Luc. 'But Shield kept me fresh every step of the way. I've run five Comrades, but this one? It was next level. I'm grateful to Shield for letting me do something totally outrageous – and prove that the product works under wild conditions.' The Shield x Luc stunt became one of the weekend's most talked-about stories — drawing cheers from spectators, admiration from fellow runners, and traction across digital and social platforms whilst raising funds for SANParks, in support of South Africa's protected wilderness areas.
