
"Air India Crash Report Unclear On Who Made Decisions": Pilots' Federation
President of the Federation of Indian Pilots, Charanvir Singh Randhawa, on Sunday raised doubts over the preliminary report on the Air India AI171 crash, saying it fails to clarify who was in control of the cockpit and points to a possible electrical or software malfunction in the aircraft.
Speaking to ANI, Randhawa said, "The aircraft was actually being flown by the co-pilot, who was the one controlling the plane, while the captain, who was the pilot-in-command, was monitoring the flight. So, it's still unclear who made the key decisions. The preliminary report doesn't make that clear, even though it would have been easy to identify from the Cockpit Voice Recorder who was speaking."
He added that the report mentions fuel control switches changing position on their own, which could indicate a serious glitch. "The report also mentions that the fuel control switches changed position, from cutoff to run, on their own. This suggests there might have been an electrical or software glitch. It seems the system detected that the switch had been moved, even though no one physically touched it."
Randhawa also referred to a Boeing advisory from 2018 warning about similar fuel switch issues in 737 aircraft. "Back in December 2018, Boeing issued an advisory about similar fuel control switch malfunctions in some 737 aircraft. If that information was available, then all the aircraft should have been checked. This circular should have been a directive rather than just an advisory," he said.
Randhawa said he does not believe the pilots would have moved the switches unless both engines had failed, which the report does not confirm. "I don't believe the pilots would have moved the fuel control switches unless they were aware of a dual engine failure causing a loss of thrust. But according to the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), they didn't move the switches. This points to a possible issue in the aircraft's electronic system."
He further added, "Yet, the preliminary report seems to give a clean chit, saying there was nothing wrong with the engines or Boeing's systems. But many questions remain unanswered. A proper investigation is still needed to understand what really happened after the aircraft took off."
According to Randhawa, flight data shows the aircraft reached a speed of 180 knots at 08:08 for two seconds. Ten seconds later, the fuel control switches either changed manually or the system recorded a change, possibly without physical input. He also pointed out that the landing gear was not retracted and the flaps remained in the takeoff position, suggesting a possible system failure.
The President of the Federation of Indian Pilots said,"We know from the flight data that the plane reached a speed of 180 knots at 08:08 for two seconds. Ten seconds later, at 08:08:52, the fuel control switches were either manually reset or the system detected a change, possibly without physical input. Also, it's clear that the landing gear wasn't retracted, and the flaps remained in takeoff position. This suggests some malfunction may have occurred."
"If the pilots moved the switches, it may have been in response to the issue. If not, it may have been an electrical fault that falsely indicated a change," Randhawa said. "I hope that in the next phase of the investigation, these questions are answered clearly. It's also important that the CVR transcript identifies who was giving the commands in the cockpit," Randhawa added.
The crash of Air India flight AI171, a Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, claimed 260 lives, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground.

‘Migrant worker sent to Bangladesh booked in neighbouring country for illegal entry'
A migrant worker from West Bengal, who was pushed into Bangladesh by security agencies, has been booked for 'illegally entering' the neighbouring country, State's Migrant Welfare Board chief Samirul Islam said on Tuesday. Mr. Islam, who is also a Trinamool Congress MP, was referring to the detention and 'pushback' of Amir Sheikh from Kaliachak. He was picked up from Rajasthan in May this year and sent to Bangladesh. 'Interestingly, there was no way to repatriate Mr. Amir except through legal intervention, as he had been tagged under a case involving illegal entry into Bangladesh. Amid such a situation, the Central government is now trying to repatriate Mr. Amir to his Malda home to save face and avoid the legal blow for the illegal pushback,' the chairperson of migrant welfare board posted on social media. Earlier this month, the father of Mr. Amir filed a habeas corpus petition before the Calcutta High Court and the court has sought response from Rajasthan government and Union government. The matter is likely to come up for hearing later this week. Imprisoned for weeks A video of the 19-year-old migrant worker has also surfaced on social media where he can be seen in tears seeking help for repatriation. According to his parents, Jiyem Sheikh and Renu Bibi, he was picked up by the police from Rajasthan in May 2025 and sent to Bangladesh by security agencies and was kept in prison for a few weeks. The parents have produced all documents including their passport, shared a video in which their son is narrating his plight asking for help and sought intervention from district officials. But their son is yet to come home. Hundreds of Bengali-speaking migrants have faced alleged detention and harassment in different States across the country and asked to produce documents to prove they are not Bangladeshi nationals. Some of the migrant workers were also pushed into Bangladesh but later repatriated with the help of Indian authorities, Mr. Islam said. The Trinamool Congress has blamed the Central government for the plight of Mr. Amir, who continues to languish in a prison in Bangladesh.

India, China in 'advanced' negotiations to resume direct flight services soon
NEW DELHI: India and China are in an "advanced stage" of negotiations to resume direct flight services between the two countries soon, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The development comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's likely visit to the Chinese city of Tianjin later this month to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The move to resume the flight services between the two Asian giants also comes amid some strain in India's ties with the US over President Donald Trump slapping a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods. New Delhi and Beijing are moving forward in a "positive" trajectory to restart trade through four border transit points, the people cited above said. Direct flight services between India and China were suspended in 2020 following the Covid-19 pandemic. The air connectivity remained suspended in view of the eastern Ladakh border row. The people cited above said the Indian and Chinese negotiators are looking at firming up a new air services agreement to resume the flight services. But if that is not materialised, then the two sides are set to resume the services using the existing air services framework. It is learnt that Air India has been sounded out about the possible resumption of flight services between India and China.

Air India plane crash: Man who lost mother moves US Federal Court against Boeing
The kin of Kalpana Prajapati, one of the victims of the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash, have moved the US Federal Court against Boeing for speedy justice. Talking to news agency ANI, Hir Prajapati, Kalpana's son, said that the family has hired Mike Andrews, a US lawyer who is currently representing over 65 families affected by the tragic crash. He recently slammed Air India for compensation delays for the victims' families, claiming that it would not have happened if Ratan Tata, former Chairperson of the Tata Group, had been alive. 'We expect the raw details of information from the black-box to come before us at the earliest so that we can make further decisions regarding next course of steps, along with our lawyer,' he said. 'In India, trials get dragged for years. We are fighting the case in the US so that a decision is pronounced early. We believe we will get justice,' he added. Mir told ANI that the Indian government and police helped the Prajapati family 'a lot' at the time of the incident. 'We are thankful to the doctors, too, who handed over the bodies to us after a swift DNA test.' Sharing the tragic detail of the accident, Mir said his mother, Kalpana Prajapati, had rescheduled the flight twice only to end up on the fateful crash. 'I had initially booked a 9th June flight for her but she had fast and she told me that she cannot travel that day. So, I then rescheduled it to 11th June. But she told me that she doesn't want to travel on an odd date. So, I finally booked a ticket for 12th June,' he said. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the 241 people who died in the June 12 crash of Air India flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad. The London-bound Boeing 787, carrying 242 people--including 230 passengers, 10 crew members, and two pilots--crashed shortly after takeoff.
