‘Mushroom killer searched online for deadly mushrooms' before in-laws deaths

Metro2 days ago

A woman accused of murdering her ex-husband's family by poisoning their lunch with death cup mushrooms searched the deadly ingredient online before their deaths, a court has heard.
Erin Patterson is charged with three counts of murder after her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson died in hospital in July 2023.
She has also been accused of attempting to murder Heather's husband Ian, who was the only one to have survived the meal.
They were suspected of eating poisonous mushrooms after eating a beef wellington meal cooked by Patterson at her home in Leongatha, Victoria.
Cybercrime officer Shamen Fox-Henry said he found references to the mushrooms on Patterson's device.
When asked if she had searched them online, she said she had 'no specific memory' but admitted: 'Does look like somebody did that yes.
'I don't remember doing it, it's possible it was me… I didn't use Internet Explorer or Bing but I accept maybe I did this time, I'm not sure.'
But she added she wanted to know if death caps 'grew in South Gippsland'.
Another online post was also found in May 2022 on iNaturalist, which Patterson says she 'does not know' if she looked it up.
The victim's symptoms were described as being consistent with poisoning by death cap mushrooms, which is a dull green fungus known scientifically as Amanita phalloides and can cause serious organ failure within 24 to 48 hours.
Patterson's ex-husband Simon Patterson had also been invited to the lunch but did not attend.
She admitted it was 'unusual' to have them all over for dinner, but she 'wanted it to be special'.
After preparing the meal, she has also been accused of dumping the dehydrator used to prepare the mushrooms in a forest.
Patterson argued after she was told her guests were being treated for poisoning at hospital, she 'just got really scared' and got rid of the dehydrator.
She said: 'I had a good relationship with them. I said they always treated me like a daughter, not like a daughter in-law, they treated me like their own daughter.'
Erin's ex-husband Simon was questioned in court about her behaviour as his parents were dying in hospital.
Simon denied that Erin had asked about the health of his parents during a phone call, which he said he thought 'that would be something that she'd be interested in asking about.'
He said he thought at the time that it is 'odd.'
The trial continues.

Body found in search for woman who disappeared after leaving London home

A body has been found by police searching for a Colombian woman who vanished after leaving her east London home. Yajaira Castro Mendez, 46, was reported missing on May 31 having left her home in Ilford on the morning of May 29. Her family has been told about the discovery of the body, which was found during searches in Hampshire's Bolderwood area on Saturday, but formal identification has yet to be made. Detective Inspector Jay Gregory said: 'This is a very sad development in the investigation and our thoughts are very much with Yajaira's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. 'We continue to appeal to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to please come forward.' A post-mortem examination has yet to take place. The Met said a man who was known to Ms Castro Mendez appeared in court on Friday charged with her murder and was remanded into custody. Her disappearance was initially treated as a missing person investigation led by local officers. The investigation was then transferred to the Met's Specialist Crime Command on June 5, after a range of extensive further inquiries suggested she had come to harm. Police were at a scene in Gray's Inn Road, Camden, on Friday as part of their investigation. Brit backpacker faces 20 years in jail for 'killing man in e-scooter crash'

A British backpacker faces up to 20 years in jail in Australia after being charged with killing a pedestrian in an e-scooter crash. Alicia Kemp, 24, is said to have spent six hours drinking before ploughing into the back of 51-year-old Thanh Phan on a footpath in Perth's central business district on May 3. Mr Phan died in hospital from brain injuries suffered in the collision. Kemp's passenger, a 26-year-old woman, suffered a fractured skull and broken nose when she was thrown from the scooter. Kemp was denied bail when she appeared in court in the city charged with dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm and dangerous driving occasioning death. Her application was refused after prosecutors told the magistrate the risk of her fleeing in the face of a 20-year maximum sentence was too great, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. Mr Phan's family paid tribute to a 'beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend'. They also called for a review of e-scooter hire regulations 'to help prevent further serious incidents that put lives at risk'. Kemp had been out drinking with a friend from 2.30pm on the day of the crash, the court heard. After her friend was asked to leave for being too drunk, they were said to have walked along Murray Street and hired an e-scooter just before 8.30pm. More Trending Kemp's 'inexplicably dangerous' riding was caught on CCTV, the prosecutor said, with other pedestrians having to get out of their way to avoid being hit. She was travelling at up to 25kph at the time of the collision, hitting Mr Phan while he was waiting to cross the road, the court heard. Kemp is next due in court on July 15. Boy, 11, dies weeks after another child killed in M4 minibus crash

An 11-year-old boy has become the second child to die after a minibus overturned on a busy motorway. Othniel Adoma, from Bracknell, Berkshire, died on Thursday, more than three weeks after the single-vehicle crash. The white Ford Transit minibus overturned on the exit slip road at junction 10 of the M4 eastbound, near Wokingham, on Sunday, May 11. A six-year-old boy, who has not been named, also died in the collision. Five other children who were injured have now been discharged from the hospital. No arrests have been made following the smash, which involved only the minibus. The motorway was closed in both directions to allow more air ambulances to land at the scene. Detective Sergeant Lyndsey Blackaby said: 'My thoughts, and the thoughts of everyone at Thames Valley Police, are with the family and friends of Othniel Adoma. 'Othniel's family has released these beautiful pictures of Othniel in his memory. Othniel's family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.' More Trending South Central Ambulance Service said it was first alerted to the crash at 2.24 pm, with its first units arriving at the scene eight minutes later. Five critical care units, including two air ambulances, attended the incident along with six ambulances. One motorist said she saw the huge emergency scene just before the road was closed off as she drove past it. She claimed 'idiots were still driving down the inside lane they had closed so the emergency vehicles could get through – hope they all get tickets.'
