
Volkswagen to ditch ID naming scheme for 'proper names' for new EVs
The current Volkswagen ID naming scheme for its electric vehicles (EV) will be junked in favour of something more in keeping with the brand's history.

It's unclear what names Volkswagen is intending to use for these cars and future EVs, with Mr Sander simply saying the company will 'announce that when the time comes'.
Earlier rumours indicated the next-generation
Golf
, which will be an electric-only model, would be
christened ID. Golf
. Given Volkswagen intends to keep the present petrol- and diesel-powered Golf in production
into the next decade
, and sell it alongside the new EV-only Golf, having the ID. prefix allows for differentiation between the two cars, while retaining the name recognition and heritage of long-lived Golf badge.
If this rumour proves to be true, the ID. 2all could end being the ID. Golf, while the smaller ID. Every1 could be the ID. Up. It's possible Volkswagen could go down the Chevrolet route, and simply call these cars the Golf EV, and Up EV.
Of course another possibility is giving these cars completely new names, possibly related in some way to the existing ICE (internal combustion engine) car in its class.
The brand has a history with this. For example, the sedan version of the Polo was once known as the Derby, while the booted variant of the Golf was the Jetta — both are named after air currents, the Gulf stream and jet stream, respectively.
Currently Volkswagen's EV carry the ID. sub-brand followed by a number, with larger numbers denoting bigger or more expensive vehicles. Like the alphanumeric systems employed by Hyundai and Kia, Volkswagen ID names don't differentiate classic body styles, like hatches and sedans, from crossovers.
Reverting to 'proper names' follows on from a declaration in 2023 by Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's head of design, that the marque would
ditch the current rounded, cab-forward design of the ID cars
for something more normal and traditional for its next-generation EVs.
The shift has already started with the company's concept cars, which were it not for their ID. badging could easily pass off as next-generation of versions of its ICE vehicles.
These include the 2023 ID. 2all, 2025 ID. Every1, and the
ID. Aura, ID. Era and ID. Evo
that were recently unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai motor show.

The Cupra Born is no longer on the company's Australian website, and Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the electric hatch is no longer on sale in Australia now that local stocks of the car have run dry. While the Born is available in Europe with a variety of motor and battery options, local models all come equipped with a 77kWh battery and a 170kW motor driving rear wheels. A 240kW/545Nm motor drives the rear wheels in the Born VZ currently sold in Europe. Under the skin, the Born uses the Volkswagen Group's MEB all-electric architecture, which underpins all of the automaker's EVs apart from a few models from Audi and Porsche. The Born's closest relation is the Volkswagen ID.3. Both cars share drivetrains, overall silhouette, much of their underlying structure, and doors. The Born's best performance was in 2023, its first full year on sale, when 887 found new homes. For this calendar year until the end of May, the Born (301) is Cupra's second-best selling model behind the Formentor SUV (686). In the broader EV context, the Born is well behind the market leaders: Tesla Model Y (6974), Model 3 (2583), and Kia EV5 (2212). But if we look at just electric hatchbacks, its performance isn't too bad. It's behind the MG 4 (2017), BYD Dolphin (776), and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (364), but ahead of the Kia EV6 (228), GWM Ora (271), Renault Megane E-Tech (138), and Nissan Leaf (62). We know this list includes an eclectic range of models across a variety of sizes and price points, some of which are marketed as SUVs, but pinning down price points can a little tricky as EV pricing tends to move around quite a bit. No Kia Sportage PHEV for Australia, at least for now
The facelifted Kia Sportage range won't be joined by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option to compete with Mitsubishi and an increasing number of Chinese brands, as well as the next-generation Toyota RAV4, says the brand's local product boss. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the upgraded mid-size SUV, Kia Australia general manager for product Roland Rivero said the Sportage PHEV hasn't been engineered for right-hand drive. 'As much as we'd love to throw [a PHEV] into say, a Sportage, we couldn't justify the business case from a volume and business case perspective [for RHD], and therefore this generation won't see a plug-in hybrid variant in Australia,' Mr Rivero said. However, it remains unclear how many new PHEV variants of the large SUV are coming. Like the Sorento PHEV, the Sportage PHEV is powered by a familiar 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine combined with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery back. Total system output is rated at 200kW for the facelifted model in North America, and while electric range hasn't been confirmed for the new version, the pre-update model in the US quoted around 50km of EV range from a 13.8kWh battery. Note that we've used the North American Sportage PHEV as a reference since it's the longer-body model similar to the vehicle sold in the Australian and Korean markets, as opposed to the shorter Slovakian-built version sold in Europe and the UK. Interestingly, the long-body Sportage PHEV is built in Korea for the US, despite Kia America producing petrol variants in Georgia. Chery will soon launch a Tiggo 7 Pro 'SHS' PHEV, and Toyota has confirmed the next-generation RAV4 Hybrid will be joined by a PHEV version in 2026. Leapmotor also has the C10 REEV (Range Extended Electric Vehicle) in this space. PHEV sales continue to grow in Australia, outpacing those of all other powertrain types – albeit off a lower base.
