UP government issues order to keep more than 2800 employees in permanent service who worked in previous COVID pandemic
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 28 (ANI): The Uttar Pradesh government has issued an order to keep more than 2800 employees who worked during the previous COVID time in permanent service.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak informed that more than 2200 people have been accommodated, and an order was issued to the government hospitals to accommodate them on priority.
'The government has issued an order to keep more than 2800 employees who worked during the time of COVID permanently in service. More than 2200 people have already been accommodated. For the remaining, a government order was issued yesterday to accommodate them on priority in all our hospitals', Brajesh Pathak told ANI.
The development takes place after there has been a sudden surge in Coronavirus cases in the country. According to the Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Dangs Lab, Arjun Dang, the rising cases of Covid-19 belonged to the sub-lineage of the Omicron virus.
Dang further stated that in states like Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, the variants that were named as 'Variants under Monitoring' were of types LF7 and NV181 and were more transmissible.
'We must understand that the current spreading variants are again a sublineage of the Omicron virus. Additionally, in states like Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, we have certain other sub-variants that have been named Variants Under Monitoring, and these are basically of two types, LF7 and NV181. Currently, the cases that we are seeing are more transmissible. They can infect people easily, but again, from the severity perspective, till now, we have not seen any severe cases,' Dang told ANI.
Meanwhile, India reported 1,009 active COVID-19 cases in the country on Monday, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. As per the Health Ministry, India's COVID-19 update showed a total of 1009 active cases, with 752 new cases recently confirmed.
According to the government data, Kerala currently tops the chart with the highest number of active cases at 430. Other states with notable case counts include Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), Gujarat (83), and Karnataka (47). (ANI)

Ludhiana records second Covid death as cases rise to 18
Ludhiana: Around 10 days after a local resident died of Covid in Chandigarh, an elderly woman became the second patient to die of Covid at a Chandigarh hospital. With this, the the number of Covid cases reported in the city this year has risen to 18 and the number of deaths has risen to two. Civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur confirmed the second Covid death and said that there are 13 active cases in the district. As per the health department, new cases reported on Friday include a 22-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman. Health officials said that the woman who died of Covid in a Chandigarh hospital was a 69-year-old resident of Koom Kalan area. The woman, who had been struggling with obesity, had intermittent fever for about five months. She had been undergoing treatment in PGI for the past month. A health department official said that after her condition deteriorated, she was referred to PGI, Chandigarh and then to Sector 16 government hospital in Chandigarh before being shifted back to PGI, where she passed away on June 4. The official added that four of the woman's contacts were tested for Covid but only her grandson tested positive. Around 13 patients are in home quarantine. Those whose home quarantine has ended include the 19-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother from Basti Jodhewal area, whose father died of Covid on May 28. Sources in the health department said that of the 18 patients who tested positive for Covid, 13 are from Ludhiana city, three from Koom Kalan area and one each from Sudhar and Khanna. Addressing the gathering at a function in Ludhiana on Friday, health minister Dr Balbir Singh said that there was no cause for concern. He maintained that the situation was completely normal and Punjab was fully equipped to tackle any situation. However, he advised immunocompromised individuals such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with conditions like kidney disease, high blood pressure, cancer, or respiratory issues to wear masks outdoors. He also underscored the importance of vigilance while affirming the state's preparedness to handle any health challenges. Talking to TOI, the minister said that they have adequate beds for Covid patients in Ludhiana. He suggested that the cases are of the Omicron variant. The health department advisory suggests that people continue using masks in crowded areas. "If you feel any flu-like symptoms, wear a mask and consult the nearest health centre, it says. Can This Covid Vaccine Technology Also 'Kick And Kill' HIV?
Last Updated: A team of Australian scientists has developed a novel method to reveal hidden HIV in white blood cells Scientists at Australia's Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne have developed a groundbreaking method to 'wake up" hidden HIV within the human body, a crucial step that could enable their complete removal. And they have used mRNA technology, the same kind used in Pfizer and Moderna's Covid-19 vaccines. Nearly 40 million people are living with HIV worldwide. One of the main challenges in curing the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) lies in its ability to establish latent reservoirs. These are small numbers of infected cells, primarily resting CD4+ T cells, where the virus integrates its genome but remains dormant and invisible to both the immune system and antiretroviral therapies (ART). While ART can suppress the virus to undetectable levels, it cannot eliminate these hidden reservoirs. If treatment stops, the virus can re-emerge and replicate, necessitating lifelong medication for people living with HIV. The Australian team discovered a novel way to deliver 'special instructions" to these hidden, latently infected cells. In a study published in Nature Communications, the researchers demonstrated how they packaged mRNA inside novel, microscopic fat-like bubbles called lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), specifically a new design termed 'LNP X". The key breakthrough was engineering these LNPs to successfully transport the mRNA into the previously hard-to-reach resting CD4+ T cells. Once delivered, the mRNA instructs these cells to 'give up" the dormant virus, forcing it out of hiding and making it visible. This strategy aligns with the long-sought 'kick and kill" approach to HIV cure, where latency-reversing agents 'shock" the virus out of its dormant state, allowing the body's immune system or other therapies to 'kill" the newly exposed infected cells. Dr Paula Cevaal, a research fellow at the Doherty Institute and co-first author, described the initial results as astonishing, requiring repeated experiments to confirm their accuracy. 'We were overwhelmed by how big the difference was," she noted, emphasising the unprecedented success in revealing the hidden virus. While the research is currently laboratory-based and conducted on cells donated by HIV patients, this innovative method represents a significant step forward. West Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari accuses State of ‘suppressing' fresh Covid data
Leader of Opposition of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Suvendu Adhikari on Friday accused the West Bengal government of keeping the State's Covid bulletin 'defunct' in a bid to 'suppress' the data on fresh Covid-positive cases in West Bengal. 'The State health department's Covid portal has been kept non-functioning to ensure the real number of Covid-positive cases does not get recorded there. The real Covid data is being suppressed in the same way that figures of dengue cases were suppressed,' Mr Adhikari said. Notably, official Covid bulletins have not been released on the State Health Department website since January 28, 2023. The bulletins, which were being uploaded almost daily since February 2020, carried facts and figures with respect to active Covid cases, fatalities, and recoveries in the State. The lack of updated data on fresh Covid cases on the West Bengal Health Department website assumes significance in the wake of a developing Covid surge in the country, where several positive cases are being recorded daily across States. A total of 55 people have died from Covid-related causes this year, according to the Covid dashboard operated by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In the Union Health Ministry's Covid dashboard, West Bengal recorded the third-highest increase in Covid-positive cases (58) among the States between June 5 and June 6, accounting for a total of 596 active cases in the State. Meanwhile, 91 people were cured and discharged on June 6, amounting to a total of 218 cured Covid cases so far this year. So far, one person has died from Covid-related causes in West Bengal this year, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data. On Friday, LoP Mr Adhikari also claimed to have accessed the State's 'accurate' district-wise Covid data. 'In Malda, for example, if 10 people are being tested for Covid, nine are being found to be positive,' he added. He further alleged that similar 'data suppression' was seen during the dengue wave. 'Doctors were scared of writing dengue as a diagnosis, in fear of transfer or torture. Now, the cases cannot be suppressed, so the government has stopped updating the data on the portal,' Mr Adhikari said. On being asked the source of the data he cited, the LoP said that the West Bengal administration does not just comprise 'Mamata Banerjee's people' but also supporters of the saffron party. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh opposed Mr Adhikari's accusations, saying that the State government is monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps. 'People have been told to stay alert. The State is making necessary system-based arrangements. However, the BJP has a habit of using fearmongering as a political tool. They should focus on the Covid situation in saffron-ruled States. The situation is in control in West Bengal,' Mr Ghosh said. Rally for 'Nari Samman' On Friday, Mr Adhikari also announced that he will lead a 'Nari Samman Yatra' (rally for women's honour) on June 9 in Bolpur in West Bengal's Birbhum district. Recently, Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal was accused of verbally abusing and threatening the Officer-in-Charge of Bolpur police station and his female family members after the alleged audio of a phone call between Mr Mondal and the police officer went viral.
