BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum releases initiative on AI cooperation, development
RIO DE JANEIRO (July 18): The BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum released an initiative on AI cooperation and development on Wednesday, calling for joint efforts to explore AI-empowered journalism and think tank research.
The initiative formed important consensus on building synergies to reshape global communication, deepening collaboration to forge new models of industrial cooperation, and leveraging intelligent production to build a new ecosystem of knowledge sharing.
The participants agreed that the AI revolution is reshaping the global information landscape, creating new opportunities for digital transformation in the Global South, while exacerbating systemic risks such as technological monopolies and data hegemony.
Therefore, BRICS media and think tanks should ground their efforts in the development realities of the Global South, foster a collaborative paradigm featuring joint technological research, shared standard-setting and collaborative governance deliberation to ensure that AI advancements benefit all humanity.
They also urged BRICS media and think tanks to take this initiative as a starting point to provide implementable frameworks — through collaborative information networks and co-created narratives — for Global South nations to harness digital opportunities and reform the international order, jointly pioneering a new era of civilisational symbiosis in the age of AI.
Under the theme 'BRICS United: Forging a New Chapter for Global South,' the forum, held from Tuesday to Thursday, attracted over 250 delegates spanning media outlets, think tanks, government institutions, enterprises from 36 countries, including BRICS member states and partner nations, as well as regional organisations. — Xinhua AI-empowered journalism BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum

Ghana takes action to meet 3.7-bln-USD Eurobond repayment by 2028
ACCRA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The government of Ghana has instituted measures to meet its external debt service obligation to Eurobond holders by 2028, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed on Thursday. While presenting the 2025 mid-year budget review in parliament, Forson said the government has reactivated its U.S. dollar sinking fund to accrue the needed funds for the debt repayments due in 2026, 2027, and 2028. With the accruals, the minister said the government would be fully prepared to honor its debt obligations of 1.42 billion dollars in 2026, 1.17 billion dollars in 2027, and 1.14 billion dollars in 2028 for Eurobond holders. Similarly, the Cedi (local currency) Sinking Fund Account will specifically target the redemption of debt service humps of 20 billion cedis (about 1.91 billion U.S. dollars) in 2026, 50.3 billion cedis in 2027, and 45.7 billion cedis in 2028, according to the minister. "The implementation of the sinking fund will provide a reliable buffer that ensures timely and predictable redemption of designated public debt obligations," Forson said, adding that such a structured approach to debt servicing would boost investor confidence and contribute to long-term debt sustainability. The West African country inked a memorandum of understanding with its external creditors in January after defaulting on most of its external debts in December 2022. In June, the credit rating agency Fitch Ratings upgraded Ghana's long-term foreign-currency issuer default rating to "B-," up from "restricted default."

VICTORIA FALLS, Zimbabwe, July 24 (Xinhua) -- A total of nine Chinese cities were accredited as international wetland cities on Thursday during the opening of the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP15) held in Zimbabwe's resort city of Victoria Falls, bringing the total number of such cities in China to 22, the highest in the world. The nine newly accredited cities are Chongming in Shanghai, Dali in Yunnan Province, Fuzhou in Fujian Province, Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province, Lhasa in the Xizang Autonomous Region, Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, and Yueyang in Hunan Province. Johane Chenjekwa, mayor of Kasane in Botswana, commended China for promoting wetland conservation, noting that Africa can benefit from cooperation with China in wetland management. "We will see, as we interact, what we can learn from them. They are also willing to learn from how we do things here, so it's really a (great) experience to be mingling (together)," he said. Chenjekwa added that as the world faces the common challenge of wetland degradation, joint efforts with China can help tackle its impacts. In his opening remarks, Jay Aldous, deputy secretary-general of the Convention on Wetlands, noted that while urbanization brings tangible development progress, there is a need to ensure that it does not interfere with wetland preservation. "Unplanned or poorly managed urban expansion has emerged as a global concern, contributing to the degradation of wetlands, loss of biodiversity, disruption of ecological balance, rising greenhouse gas emissions, worsening air and water pollution, and escalating the impacts of climate change," he said. In response to these challenges and recognizing the pivotal role of cities and urban wetlands, the Convention on Wetlands launched the Wetland City Accreditation scheme to encourage the protection of urban wetlands and their integration into sustainable urban planning, Aldous said. "By embracing the convention's principles of wise use, cities can harness the ecological, social, and economic benefits that wetlands provide, including climate adaptation and mitigation, flood regulation, cultural value, and improved human well-being," he said. Held under the theme of "Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future", the COP15, which will conclude on July 31, has brought together contracting parties to strengthen international commitments to wetland protection.

Roundup: African experts spot potential of Juncao technology to boost livelihoods, sustainable agriculture
KIGALI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- African agricultural experts are looking to harness Juncao technology, a Chinese innovation used in mushroom cultivation and livestock feed, to improve livelihoods and increase incomes in rural communities across the continent. "Juncao technology offers far more than mushroom cultivation; it is a comprehensive innovation having crop, livestock production, environmental protection, livelihood nutrition and economic empowerment," said Telesphore Ndabamenye, director general of the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board. He made the remark while attending the closing ceremony of a Juncao technology workshop held on Wednesday in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Stressing the importance of Juncao technology in advancing agricultural transformation, Ndabamenye said the participation of trainees from diverse economies highlighted the broad applicability of the technology, particularly in addressing the socioeconomic challenges faced by smallholder farmers. "Juncao technology is regarded in Rwanda as a vital contributor to the country's inclusive agriculture transformation. It supports our national vision of a professionalized and commercialized farming sector with active participation of both men and women as stated under Rwanda's vision 2050," he said. He reaffirmed Rwanda's commitment to integrating Juncao technology into the country's strategy for food and nutrition security, environmental sustainability, and economic development, in full alignment with continental and global development agendas. Since Juncao was first introduced to Rwanda in 2006, more than 35,000 local farmers have received training, and over 4,000 households, along with 50 companies and cooperatives, have been supported in engaging in Juncao-related activities. The July 16-23 Juncao workshop was held at the China-Rwanda Agriculture Technology Demonstration Center, co-hosted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and China's Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University. As part of the training, participants visited several projects in Huye and Nyanza, gained hands-on experience, and deepened their understanding of Juncao technology's potential. Innocent Shayamano, chief agriculture extension specialist and project coordinator from Zimbabwe's Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, said the workshop covered critical areas such as cultivation management of Juncao grass, including all its agronomic aspects. "This course was relevant and significant for our country. We have seen the opportunities in embracing Juncao technology in terms of using Juncao grass as a substitute for livestock feed. This technology came to transform livelihoods and ensure that rural communities have enough income," he said. Chinese Juncao expert Lin Hui said the participants' active engagement, thoughtful questions, and enthusiasm for applying the acquired knowledge were truly inspiring. According to Lin, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University of China has organized 388 training courses over the years, benefiting more than 16,000 people worldwide. According to Li Jiahui, a representative of the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda, the technology has benefited over 100 countries since 2001, helping families lift themselves out of poverty and achieve prosperity. "It has been proven that Juncao is not merely a technology but a grass of wealth and a grass of happiness. China takes great pride in sharing the technology as part of its commitment to South-South cooperation," Li added.
