Gary Lineker's final blow in BBC feud as Mo Salah interview 'blocked over Gaza'
Gary Lineker presented his final ever Match of the Day last weekend after leaving the BBC early but a new report has now claimed one of his final interviews was brutally axed
The BBC decided to cancel what would have been Gary Lineker 's final Match of the Day interview shortly before his farewell appearance on the show, it has emerged.
Lineker, 64, bowed out from the iconic highlights show last weekend after 25 years at the helm. His exit from the corporation came shortly after the former England star issued an apology for sharing an anti-Semitic post on social media, prompting him and the BBC to come to terms on an agreement to part ways this year instead of after the 2026 World Cup.
And it has now emerged, via The Sun, that Lineker's final interview in his role - which was due to be with Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool talisman - was axed at short notice.
The report speculates that the move may have been made by the BBC amid concerns that Lineker 'would say something controversial about Gaza' during his chat with Salah.
A source confirmed to the publication that the interview was due to be played across Match of the Day and Football Focus over the weekend of Lineker's final show before Alex Kay-Jelski, the BBC's director of sport, pulled the plug.
They added: 'Out of nowhere, it got cancelled. Some people think they didn't want Gary and Mo to talk about Gaza.
'Salah has spoken out in his support for Palestinians living in Gaza and Gary has made his feelings clear too. It felt like it may have come up naturally in conversation.
'It seems they axed it rather than risk possible editorial issues. They'd only just overcome one storm so to face another would have been a nightmare.'
The BBC, however, said of the decision: 'The interview was cancelled because it was planned to air after Gary's last Match of the Day. It would be wrong to suggest anything else.'
Lineker bid an emotional farewell to viewers at the end of his final show in the hotseat, saying: 'Let me take this opportunity to thank all of the other pundits that I've had the pleasure of working with over the last 25 years, you've made my job so much easier.
'Also, a huge thank you to those you don't see at home: the work that goes into making this iconic show is a huge team effort. From the editors, to the analysis team, from the commentators to the floor managers, from the producers to the camera operators, from the PAs to the subs, thank you all, you're the very best.
'Rather like my football career, everyone else did all the hard work and I got the plaudits. It's been an absolute privilege to host Match of the Day for a quarter of a century. It's been utterly joyous. I'd like to wish Gabby, Mark and Kelly for when they sit in this chair - the programme is in the best of hands.
'And my final thank you goes to all of you. Thank you for watching. Thank you for all of your love and support over the years. It's been so special - and I'm sorry that your team was always on last. Time to say goodbye. Goodbye.'

We like these things because they're safe and a little bit cosy and we all know what the rules are. One of the most rigid genres at the moment is slightly different. Even though it's got a set of incredibly strict rules, it's regarded by its adherents, not as an exercise within conventional boundaries, like an episode of Midsomer Murders, but as a radical demonstration of rule-breaking. I'm talking about the experimental novel. After a while, the sceptical reader has to ask: if the same rule is being broken in exactly the same way, novel after novel, at what point does that turn into a new and very strict rule? Earlier this year, the Irish-British novelist Eimear McBride published a new novel, The City Changes Its Face. I single her out but, to be honest, there is no shortage of other exemplars. It was greeted with rapture by book reviewers. The Guardian observed with awe that 'she uses verbs as nouns, nouns as adjectives'. This magazine's reviewer wrote: 'To say that it is 'experimental' doesn't do justice to its flexibility and force.

Doctor Who star breaks silence on exit after taking time to 'process'
Doctor Who aired its latest season finale on Saturday night, in which the likes of Ncuti Gatwa, Varada Sethu and Millie Gibson appeared to bid farewell to the BBC show Cast member Varada Sethu has now broken her silence following the season finale of Doctor Who on the weekend. The episode, which featured the departure of her co-star Ncuti Gatwa, is thought to mark her exit from the show. Varada, 33, played companion Belinda Chandra in the latest season of the BBC show. The character made her debut in the first episode, which aired in April, and then bid farewell to the Doctor - played by Ncuti, 32 - in Saturday's finale. The actor has since addressed her apparent departure from Doctor Who in a lengthy post shared on Instagram today. Varada wrote about her experience as a cast member alongside various photos, including several of her and Ncuti. She wrote in the caption: "Wow wow wow wow wow. I'm sooo late to the party (as always), but needed to take a few days to process this show, this finale and everything & everyone it has brought into my life, what it all means. "My heart has doubled in size. I have felt so so full of gratitude and love, I still feel I haven't found the words to express it. It has been a true gift to know a woman like Belinda, I will never forget our journey together." Praising her co-stars, she continued by writing: "Thank you [Ncuti] for being my partner in crime, my beloved Doctor. You are unending, pure magic, what a privilege it's been to bear witness to it. Mom & Dad forever. My sweet angel [ Millie Gibson ], thank you for your kindness, for always lifting me up, you have stolen everyone's hearts!! I cannot wait to see what life has in store for you." Varada then expressed gratitude for some colleagues who worked behind-the-scenes. She wrote: "For teaching me and showing me love & support like I've never known before." She added in the post this week: "Thank you to every beautiful soul involved in this madness." She concluded: "And of course to the beautiful fans, thank you soooo much for embracing Belinda, for all the kind words, all the joy! I think I finally understand what you meant [ Russell T. In a video message shared by the BBC, Ncuti said: "It's a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally. The actors playing the Doctor are only actors playing the Doctor. Race Across the World paid tribute to a former contestant at the end of tonight's episode, after it was revealed that Sam Gardiner has died aged 24 in a car crash Race Across the World has honoured a past contestant following their untimely passing. The emotional tribute came at the close of Wednesday's episode for 24-year-old Sam Gardiner, who passed away this week. When the end credits began to roll, the viewers were met with a touching tribute to the series two adventurer. Displayed alongside Sam's photo, the message read: "In loving memory of Sam Gardiner, 2000 to 2025." Fans of the hit BBC travel show expressed their sorrow on X (formerly Twitter), with one posting: "They gave Sam Gardiner an end card. Sad." Another shared: "The tribute to Sam Gardiner [sad face]," and one more added: "Rest in peace to Sam Gardiner, who took part in series 2 with his Mum, Jo, back in 2020." Sam and mum Jo were unable to compete in the final leg of the race after they ran out of money. However, Sam had described his time on Race Across the World as a "life-changing" experience.
