Norway wealth fund terminates Israel asset management contracts

The Hindu2 days ago
Norway's $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund said on Monday (August 11, 2025) it is terminating contracts with asset managers handling its Israeli investments and has divested parts of its portfolio in the country over the situation in Gaza and the West Bank.
The announcement follows an urgent review launched last week following media reports that the fund had built a stake in an Israeli jet engine group that provides services to Israel's armed forces, including the maintenance of fighter jets.
"All investments in Israeli companies that have been managed by external managers will be moved in-house and managed internally," the fund said. The fund, an arm of Norway's central bank, which held stakes in 61 Israeli companies as of June 30, in recent days divested stakes in 11 of these, it said in a statement, without naming the groups.
"We have now completely sold out of these positions," the fund said, adding that it continued to review Israeli companies for potential divestments. The review will also lead to improved due diligence, it added.
"The fund's investments in Israel will now be limited to companies that are in the equity benchmark index. However, we will not be invested in all Israeli companies in the index," it said.
The fund, which owns stakes in 8,700 companies worldwide, held shares in 65 Israeli companies at the end of 2024, valued at $1.95 billion, its records show.
In the last year it sold its stakes in an Israeli energy company and a telecoms group over ethics concerns, and its ethics watchdog has said it is reviewing whether to divest holdings in five banks.
Norway's Parliament in June rejected a proposal for the fund to divest from all companies with activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.

New Zealand PM says Netanyahu has 'lost the plot'

New Zealand's prime minister said Wednesday (August 13, 2025) that Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu had "lost the plot", accusing him of going too far in his efforts to wage war on Gaza. "What's happening in Gaza is utterly, utterly appalling," said Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. "Netanyahu has gone way too far. I think he has lost the plot," added Luxon in unusually candid comments. "He is not listening to the international community and that is unacceptable." Mr. Netanyahu recently rolled out plans to take control of Gaza City and wipe out Hamas, insisting it was "the best way to end the war" despite growing calls to halt the bloodshed. UN-backed experts have warned of widespread famine unfolding in the territory, where Israel has severely restricted the entry of humanitarian aid. Israel has faced mounting criticism over the war, which was triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel. New Zealand on Monday hinted it could join the likes of Australia, Canada, France and Britain in recognising a Palestinian state. "New Zealand has been clear for some time that our recognition of a Palestinian state is a matter of when, not if," Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said. "Cabinet will take a formal decision in September over whether New Zealand should recognise a state of Palestine at this juncture — and if so, when and how."

Israel, Russia 'on notice' for sexual violence in conflict zones, warns UN Chief

As the Gaza and Ukraine wars continue to rage, the United Nations has put Israel and Russia "on notice" amid concerns of their armed forces committing sexual violence in conflict zones. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned Israel and Russia of being put on the blacklist of parties that have been "credibly suspected of committing or being responsible for patterns of rape or other forms of sexual violence."(AFP) In his annual report to the UN Security Council on conflict-related sexual violence, as seen by Reuters, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned Israel and Russia of being put on the blacklist of parties that have been 'credibly suspected of committing or being responsible for patterns of rape or other forms of sexual violence'. This warning from the UN comes after the intergovernmental organisation documented 'patterns of certain forms of sexual violence'. In the report, the Palestinian militant group Hamas has already been blacklisted for the sexual violence and rape committed during the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel. Hamas, however, has rejected these claims and dismissed them as an attempt to divert attention from the ongoing war in Gaza. What are the allegations against Israel? In the warning to Israel, the UN chief has stated he was gravely concerned about credible information of violations by Israeli armed and security forces", particularly against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, detention centres and military bases. "Cases documented by the United Nations indicate patterns of sexual violence such as genital violence, prolonged forced nudity and repeated strip searches conducted in an abusive and degrading manner," Guterres wrote in the report. Despite communication with Israel's special envoy over sexual violence, the UN chief alleged "limited information" has been provided to the UN "on accountability measures undertaken in relation to alleged incidents of sexual violence, despite witness testimony and digital evidence of Israeli soldiers committing such violations." Israel has rejected these claims. In a strong response, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon has deemed the allegations made by the UN as "unfounded" and based on "biased publications". "The UN must focus on the shocking war crimes and sexual violence of Hamas and the release of all hostages. Israel will not shy away from protecting its citizens and will continue to act in accordance with international law," Danon said in his response. What are the allegations against Russia? In the notice to Russia, the UN chief flagged concerns regarding sexual violence committed by Russian armed forces and security personnel against Ukrainian prisoners of war. "These cases comprised a significant number of documented incidents of genital violence, including electrocution, beatings and burns to the genitals, and forced stripping and prolonged nudity, used to humiliate and elicit confessions or information," said Guterres, citing documentation from 50 official and 22 unofficial detention facilities in Ukraine and Russia. Russia and its UN mission in New York are yet to respond to these allegations.

‘No foreign backing, no arms' for Hezbollah, Lebanon tells Iran's security chief

Lebanon's president warns against foreign-backed armed groups as his cabinet approves a US-backed plan to disarm Hezbollah amid Iranian assurances of respect for sovereignty and renewed debate over the group's weapons. No group in Lebanon is permitted to bear arms or rely on foreign backing, its president told a visiting senior Iranian official on Wednesday after the cabinet approved the goals of a U.S.-backed roadmap to disarm the Iran-aligned Hezbollah group. During a meeting in Beirut with Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's top security body, Joseph Aoun warned against foreign interference in Lebanon's internal affairs, saying the country was open to cooperation with Iran but only within the bounds of national sovereignty and mutual respect. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Larijani said the Islamic Republic supports Lebanon's sovereignty and does not interfere in its decision-making. 'Any decision taken by the Lebanese government in consultation with the resistance is respected by us,' he said after separate talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, whose Amal movement is an ally of Hezbollah. By 'resistance', Larijani was alluding to the Shi'ite Muslim militant Hezbollah, which was founded in 1982, grew into a 'state-within-a-state' force better armed than the Lebanese army and has repeatedly fought Israel over the decades. 'Iran didn't bring any plan to Lebanon, the U.S. did. Those intervening in Lebanese affairs are those dictating plans and deadlines', said Larijani. He said Lebanon should not 'mix its enemies with its friends - your enemy is Israel, your friend is the resistance'. 'I recommend to Lebanon to always appreciate the value of resistance." The US submitted a plan through President Donald Trump's envoy to the region, Tom Barrack, setting out the most detailed steps yet for disarming Hezbollah, which has rejected mounting calls to disarm since its devastating war with Israel last year. Hezbollah has rejected repeated calls to relinquish its weaponry although it was seriously weakened in the war, with Israel killing most of its leadership in airstrikes and bombings. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It was the climax of a conflict that began in October 2023 when the group opened fire at Israeli positions along Lebanon's southern frontier in support of its Palestinian Islamist ally Hamas at the start of the Gaza war. Aoun also said recent remarks by some Iranian officials had not been helpful, and reaffirmed that the Lebanese state and its armed forces were solely responsible for protecting all citizens. Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran supported any decision Hezbollah makes, adding that this was not the first attempt to strip the group of its weapons.
