Jaguars' OC Grant Udinski on what it's like working with Travis Hunter
#Jaguars OC Grant Udinski on working with Travis Hunter: "He's been an injection of energy into not just the offense, but I think the team. What you see on TV — him dancing around and bringing the juice and energy — that is genuine."📺 Full episode: https://t.co/QgPxEMgRYi https://t.co/bUEhI69q0v pic.twitter.com/qzAkquyizY
On the latest episode of 'NFL Spotlight' with Ari Meirov, Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive coordinator discussed what it was like working with Travis Hunter, who is playing both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
"He's been an injection of energy into not just the offense, but I think the team," Udinski said. "What you see on TV of him dancing around or bringing the juice and all of that energy to practice, that is genuine. That's the real deal right there.
"He's a lot of fun to be around, not only because he brings that energy but because he is a football guy in the sense that he loves football, wants to be great, willing to work, wants to talk about things, wants to go over things."
Since arriving in Jacksonville, Hunter has been in both the offensive and defensive meeting rooms, learning both playbooks and the terminology of each scheme. But on the practice field, most of Hunter's playing time up to this point has come at wide receiver.
That was the plan from the start, and GM James Gladstone added recently that the team views cornerback as Hunter's more natural position. I would also add that the team likely wanted Hunter to get a jump start on what is a robust playbook under Liam Coen.
The next step for Hunter in his progression will be practicing on both offense and defense regularly during the same practice. For most of OTAs and minicamp, Hunter was either on offense or defense on a given day.
Now, how exactly Coen and the Jaguars plan to divvy up those practice reps for Hunter remains to be seen.
"Like Liam said," added Udinski, "I know he's mentioned it multiple times, he can run all day. So he's out there excited about practice, and he's practicing hard for the entire time he's practicing. That's exciting for me as a coach to be a part of that to let alone have a guy like that to get to work with.
"I'm excited about the challenges of splitting time between offense and defense and the many different roles that he'll play on our team and if there's a guy that can do it, I'm excited about seeing him approach that challenge."

Davante Adams wants Travis Hunter to succeed, doubts anyone can play both ways long-term
Davante Adams knows how hard it can be on a wide receiver's body to play game after game for a decade. And that's why Adams doubts that Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter can have a long career playing both wide receiver and cornerback. Adams was asked on The Pivot Podcast which players he's most looking forward to seeing this season, and he named Hunter as his top choice. 'One, Travis Hunter. I want to see Travis Hunter do his thing,' Adams said. But Adams said that while he's impressed with Hunter becoming a superstar two-way player in college at Colorado, Adams has his doubts that even a player of Hunter's talent can be an elite contributor on both offense and defense. 'I don't even think it's possible to do, for real. Not at a high level,' Adams said. Adams said he could see Hunter having an impact early in his career on both sides of the ball, but questions whether it's fair to him to expect him to take the wear and tear on his body of being a full-time player on both offense and defense. 'I'm not even concerned so much if he can do it over the course of a game or season, it's more like how long is his career going to be if he's playing that many snaps?' Adams said. 'Once you get out there playing both sides, now you have to tackle. You've got to tackle Derrick Henry with that frame.' A handful of players in modern football have played significant snaps on both offense and defense, but no one has had a long career as a full-time contributor on both sides of the ball in more than half a century. If there's anyone who can do it, it's Hunter. But Adams doubts there's anyone who can do it.

3 Steelers position battles to watch in preseason opener vs Jaguars
The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 preseason opener is just around the corner. While fans will have to make do without the exciting rookie Will Howard, there's still plenty of intrigue as the Steelers face off on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 9 — including these three existing positional battles to keep an eye on. Cameron Johnston vs. Corliss Waitman While not as exciting as some of the other positional battles, the now-healthy Johnston will apparently have to re-earn the starting punter spot. Waitman served admirably in place of the veteran punter last season, but if he wants to remain on the roster, he'll need a fantastic preseason performance. Kaleb Johnson vs. Kenneth Gainwell A battle no one was expecting — that is, until Johnson was surprisingly listed as the RB3 on the unofficial depth chart. Gainwell's experience and talents as a pass-catching back give him the edge over the third-round rookie, but Johnson's performance against Jacksonville could blow the competition wide open. Pat Freiermuth vs. Jonnu Smith Another shocking battle to watch during preseason — if the first-team offense plays a drive vs. the Jaguars — is Freiermuth and Smith for the TE1 role. Many assumed Freiermuth would remain the top tight end due to his experience with Pittsburgh, but the unofficial depth chart let us know that the top spot is up for grabs — and Smith could claim it with a dominant preseason outing.
