Friars Walk Newport says Home Store only temporary

When the new Home Store was announced to be taking over the old Debenhams unit in Friars Walk, Newport, earlier last month, shoppers were understandably delighted.
The unit stood empty since the collapse of the national chain four years ago and after a being used as a vaccination centre during Covid, and until April, there was no sign of life in the building. But since its opening, some shoppers say they have been left disappointed by the replacement.
It may be part of the signage advertising the once empty unit, but the phrase 'bring this space to life' emblazoned above the front doors fills shoppers with anticipation upon entering.
The new Home Store sells a range of kitchen supplies, storage, carpets and electricals.
However, concerns have been raised about the appearance of the store which internally has all the same fixings from the previous Debenhams shop and signage from brands such as Wallis or Urban Decay, which are not part of this operation.

Instead, shoppers are met with piles of toilet role for sale, cleaning items and Tupperware.
With initial reports leading shoppers to believe that the store would be a furniture store, the change in direction has left some feeling increasingly disappointed. But Friars Walk has taken to reassuring customers on the store's purpose
Inside the new Home Store in Friars Walk, Newport (Image: NQ) A spokesperson for Friars Walk said: 'Home Store opened its doors in May as a temporary let whilst we continue to look for a more permanent tenant to fill the space; in the meantime, the doors are open, the lights are on and it's an additional offer for customers in the city.'
There is a consensus among shoppers: they are left unsatisfied.
With zero online presence it's hard to find anything out about the business until you visit, but users have taken to social media to express their displeasure with the store's allocation to the unit.
Many Facebook users have expressed their distaste for the shop, on posts concerned about its purpose. User Eleanor Fynn-Goggin described how they simply "walked in and walked straight back out".
Other users such as Graham Shrewsbury believe that the Debenhams signage should stay, as a reminder of "the wonderful stores we have lost that now sell junk".
One reader, who calls themselves chezzajo, on a previous Argus article announcing the store's opening said: 'It's not a furniture store. It sells cheap, tacky goods with false discounts.'
The Argus has made numerous attempts to meet with the manager of Home Store but so far our attempts have been unsuccessful.

Readers express disappointment as Caffi Florence set to close

Earlier this week, The Leader reported on the announcement that Caffi Florence, based at Loggerheads Country Park, would be closing for good. The cafe has been based at the park, between Ruthin and Mold, for more than a decade. It was taken over by the staff in 2014 and initially became a workers cooperative. Over the years, as staff left to pastures new, the running of the business became the primary responsibility of Nicola Price-Rohan, the front of hose manager and Catherine Metcalfe, who is head chef. The pair have been running the business as a partnership since June 2017 and even managed to retain all their staff through the Covid pandemic and refurbished for a re-opening. But, there was disappointment for visitors recently when the team confirmed that Caffi Florence would be closing for good as of August 31. Speaking to The Leader, Nicola cited a dispute with Denbighshire County Council as the main issue. She said that work to improve flood defences and renovated dated buildings, would have seen a significant rent increase for them. She added that the cafe's regular customers, and their dogs 'have been the backbone' of the business over the years. In response, Denbighshire Council said it was 'disappointed with the outcome'. Also left disappointed are our readers who have been contacting us to share their views on the Cafe's imminent closure. Norma Sommerville said: "Outrageous! Will be missed by many families. Walkers young and old should be encouraged." Christine Vandelden added: "It's needed there for people to enjoy a day out." Sonia Williams said: "Oh that's such a shame. We always have an ice-cream on our walk." TOP STORIES TODAY Eirlys Hollinshead told us: "This is so sad, grew up in Gwernymynydd. Has been there as long as I can remember, I worked on a Saturday there and all the children from Colymendy use to come. It will be sadly missed." Dianne Edwards said: "So sorry to hear this Nikki, you and your staff have worked so hard over the years, you will all be missed." Helen Doyle said: "So sad. You will be missed by many dogs and humans alike." Tracy McDowell said: "Without the cafe and the lovely staff that work there, it wouldn't be the park that has become so well loved today. The families, dog walkers, school parties, elderly, have all called in the lovely cafe over the years and returned over and over. "Over 30 years, I have shared it with my family, young and old . From the first meeting of my husband's large family, to kid's parties, family get together in the summer , afternoon tea's to hot chocolate and a sandwich in the winter. Thank you to everyone at Caffi Florence. You will be missed." Gillian Prestwich said: "What a great shame, it is always so busy." Annie Lloyd added: "Very disappointed. Small businesses should be encouraged to thrive in the area, especially when they have a proven track record."

Leisure centre to reopen two years after closure over severe storm damage

Girvan's Quay Zone leisure centre is on track to reopen early next year after being forced to close due to severe storm damage in January 2024. And it is expected that an extension will be complete by March next year. The facility, operated by South Carrick Community Leisure (SCCL) under a 40-year lease from South Ayrshire Council, was left uninhabitable after Storm Isha and subsequent stormy weather caused major water ingress. Since then, services have been delivered from temporary locations in Maybole and Girvan to keep the community's swimming, gym, and fitness programmes running. Within a month of the closure, SCCL negotiated a temporary lease for the recently vacated Maybole Swimming Pool, allowing general and lane swimming, Aquafit, and a Learn to Swim programme to continue. A temporary gym was set up in Girvan Community Centre in July 2024, offering a full range of equipment and a limited schedule of fitness classes. School swimming lessons were also maintained thanks to funding from Carrick Futures, the Tralorg Community Benefit Fund, and Girvan and South Carrick Local Place Plan funding. In 2025, 289 local pupils took part, up from 242 in 2024, with Girvan Primary joining the programme for the first time since the closure. The report to South Ayrshire Council's Services and Partnerships Performance Panel stated that, prior to the storm, the Quay Zone was on course for a post-Covid recovery year, with income expected to be 7.5 per cent higher than the previous year. While the closure resulted in trading losses, the facility should not lose out overall, with insurance payments expected to bring the 2024–25 accounts to a balanced position. Repair work, managed by the council's design and asset teams alongside insurers, is expected to return the pool, gym, and studio spaces to SCCL by the end of December 2025. , An extension, due for completion in March 2026, will expand the café, add meeting and function space, and create a balcony with views of Ailsa Craig and Woodlands Bay. SCCL General Manager, Peter Linton, praised staff for their flexibility and commitment in maintaining services over the past 18 months, despite operational challenges with older facilities and staffing logistics. Councillors on the Service and Partnerships Performance Panel will scrutinise the update at their meeting on August 20.
