Pep Guardiola confirms Man City stance on Phil Foden after star's admission
Pep Guardiola says that Manchester City will offer Phil Foden their full support after he opened on his mental and physical struggles following a difficult season
Pep Guardiola has assured Phil Foden that he's ready to do whatever it takes to nurse him back to health both physically and mentally. The Manchester City midfielder has been left out of the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Andorra and the friendly with Senegal after sending a plea to Thomas Tuchel about needing a rest.
The 24-year-old has been a shadow of the player that was named FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Player of the Year last season and has admitted that he's been plagued by an ankle injury and mental burn-out.
Guardiola has named Foden in the squad for a final-day visit to Fulham from which City need a point to guarantee Champions League qualification - and that the Stockport-born academy graduate will be going to the Club World Cup in the United States next month.
But the City boss said: 'Phil is family for us. He's come from being a baby boy from the academy to be a star with us. We want to help him, that's the most important thing. He needs rest - and it's going to happen after Sunday.
'Step by step he comes back and we want to help him. I don't care about his performances, I want him to feel good and the rest will come. In principle, he will come to America.'
City moved into third place by beating Bournemouth on Tuesday night and their superior goal difference means a point at Craven Cottage is likely to be enough to take them back into the Champions League.
Guardiola insisted he was joking when he suggested after the 3-1 win over the Cherries that he would quit the Etihad if new sporting director Hugo Viana attempts to build a bigger squad this summer after seeing City's season undermined by injuries.
But he did admit that his players are now facing a make-or-break game that will have consequences for the future. Guardiola said: 'I was laughing when I said that - I'm not going to quit. But the expression is the same: I don't want players at home when the team is playing.
'Everyone needs the chance to compete. Injuries, if they happen, are a big problem but we expect next season to be different. In the last three weeks or a month, four or five players sitting at home is not healthy for any of us, for the club, me, anyone. The club knows it and agrees with me, we're going to find the best way for all of us.
'This is by far the biggest game of the season. It's really important and Fulham are an exceptional team. Wow, it will be a tough game.
'If we don't get it (the result) then I will tell you afterwards what will happen. We must also think about what happens if we are in the Champions League.'

'It really was the best job in local radio'
As the 2024-25 season comes to an end, it is expected to be a summer of change at Manchester City. It is also going to be one at BBC Radio Manchester. After eight seasons with the team, I have decided now is the time to go for a new challenge and that means leaving my role as the station's Manchester City six of those eight seasons I have been lucky to be the voice of the Blues on local radio. I have witnessed four Premier League titles in a row, three final-day dramas, two Manchester derby FA Cup finals and one are too many moments to provide a single standout. Big nights, big games, it really was the best job in local started with a one-off opportunity as Manchester City beat West Ham at London Stadium 5-0 in January 2017. It ended with a full-time job and watching Omar Marmoush scoring the club's goal of the season at home to club, the manager and the players have been brilliant to speak to and work with through those have given me stories some can only ever dream of.I want to say thank you to the listeners. I tried to call each game fairly, with passion and pride in my work. Win, lose or draw, I hope I made you laugh, cry (but in a good way) and get feels like the right time to explore new broadcasting opportunities and push myself further. And according to Spanish outlet AS Sport, Madrid are in the hunt for a new Joselu-like figure to come to the Bernabeu. The former Stoke and Newcastle forward may have flopped in the Premier League, but he's fondly remembered in the Spanish capital. Joselu scored crucial goals en route to Real's 2024 Champions League victory, most notably his two late notches in the semi-final win over Bayern Munich. READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS NOW WE'RE BOTH POSH! David Beckham to be awarded knighthood after string of near misses Joselu, who came through the ranks at Real as a youngster, scored 18 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions as he played a vital support role after rejoining for a year aged 33. And having been without such a prolific role player this year after Joselu joined Saudi side Al-Gharafa SC, Firmino has reportedly dropped onto Madrid's radar. The Brazilian, 33, who once featured in one of most lethal Premier League front-threes with Mo Salah and Sado Maino, now plays in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli. Firmino is also seen as someone who could play a vital bench role for new manager Xabi Alonso, who also starred for both Liverpool and Madrid. Trent Alexander-Arnold breaks down in tears and kisses badge as he gets emotional send-off from Liverpool fans A move would allow youngster Gonzalo Garcia, 21, another year to develop after scoring 25 goals for Madrid's academy this season. If does complete the switch, then Firmino would be reunited with former Liverpool team-mate Alexander-Arnold. The pair who won it all at Liverpool during Jurgen Klopp's golden years, including the club's first-ever Premier League trophy and the 2019 Champions League title. While Firmino was given a hero's send-off when he was released in 2023, the England right-back faced heavy criticism from Liverpool fans, who were initially fuming about his free agent status. But Madrid have since paid £10million to release Alexander-Arnold a month early from this contract that was due to end on June 30. The Spanish giants were hell-bent on having the 26-year-old for the Club World Cup, starting on June 14 in the US. Firmino would also have fellow Brazilians Vinicius Jr and Eder Militao as team-mates.
