Prolific Southend shoplifter jailed for four months after admitting 14 thefts
A SHOPLIFTER has been jailed after admitting 14 shop thefts across Southend and Westcliff.
David Linder, 30, of the Clarence Road area, was arrested last Sunday after being spotted by an officer in Southend's Warrior Square.
He appeared at Southend magistrates court the following day and admitted all thefts committed between December 8 2024 and April 1 2025.
Linder was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

He was jailed for four months and ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge and that the knife be destroyed.
Essex Police says that within the first three months of this year, 437 people were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting across the county, with 26 of those charged also charged with assaulting a retail worker.

Italy has ended spyware contract with Paragon, parliamentary document shows
By Giuseppe Fonte and Alvise Armellini ROME (Reuters) -Italy has terminated a contract with Israeli spyware maker Paragon, a parliamentary document showed on Monday, following allegations that the Italian government used its technology to hack critics' phones. Paragon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Meta's WhatsApp chat service said earlier this year Paragon spyware had targeted scores of users, including a journalist and members of the Mediterranea migrant sea rescue charity critical of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The government said in February that seven mobile phone users in Italy had been targeted by the spyware. Rome denied any involvement in illicit activities and said it had asked the National Cybersecurity Agency to look into the affair. A newly published report from the parliamentary committee on security, COPASIR, showed that Italian intelligence services had initially put on hold and then ended their contract with Paragon following the media outcry. The report said Italy's domestic and foreign intelligence agencies had activated contracts with Paragon in 2023 and 2024 respectively and used it on a very limited number of people, with permission from a prosecutor. The foreign intelligence agency used the spyware to search for fugitives, counter illegal immigration, alleged terrorism, organised crime, fuel smuggling and counter-espionage and internal security activities, COPASIR said. It said members of the Mediterranea charity were spied on "not as human rights activists, but in reference to their activities potentially related to irregular immigration", with permission from the government. Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, Meloni's point man on intelligence matters, authorised the use of Paragon spyware on Mediterranea activists Luca Casarini and Beppe Caccia on September 5, 2024, the report said. Mantovano was not immediately available for comment. A Sicilian judge last month ordered six members of Mediterranea, including Casarini and Caccia, to stand trial on accusations of aiding illegal immigration, the first time crew members of a rescue vessel have faced such prosecution. All denied wrongdoing. The report found no evidence that Francesco Cancellato, a reported target and editor of investigative website Fanpage, had been put under surveillance using Paragon's spyware, as he had alleged to Reuters and other media outlets.

Man chased on tarmac at Heathrow Airport near moving aircraft
A man has been filmed being chased on the tarmac at Heathrow Airport before being apprehended. The individual, who was wearing something wide around his waist, was seen running away from at least four other men within metres of moving and stationary aircraft. The chase appeared to last around a minute before a van arrived with two people in fluorescent tops, and the man stopped running. He was later pulled to the ground. Several seconds later, a police van arrived. The man was then put into the back of the vehicle. A Heathrow spokesperson said: "Working with partners, we have quickly resolved an incident at the airport involving an individual who accessed the airfield taxiway. "The individual has been removed from the airport. The airport continues to operate as normal and passengers are travelling as planned." Three drivers clocked at over 100mph in an hour
A road policing chief said he was left "horrified" after three drivers were caught driving at over 100 mph on a stretch within the space of an hour. Adam Pipe, from Essex Police, said one of his officers, who was carrying out speed checks on the A12 between Chelmsford and Witham, detected a total of 180 offences in just 60 minutes. One motorist was clocked driving at 140mph, another at 121mph - and a third at 110mph. They will all receive court summons, the force added. "It's totally unacceptable and is putting road users, as well as themselves, at risk of serious injury or death," Mr Pipe said. "I'm horrified to see drivers reaching twice the legal speed limit on our roads," he added. "We've seen a number of serious collisions on our roads this year, with people losing their lives." He said the force was committed to reducing speeds and officers were patrolling the roads network 24 hours a day, to catch irresponsible drivers and keep people safe. The patrol was carried out on Friday afternoon. Mr Pipe said: "I urge people to think about the consequences of driving too fast and the irreparable damage that can be caused. "Don't resort to speeding, it's never worth the devastating cost," he warned. The fixed penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three points on a driving licence. Drivers who exceed the limit by a significant margin can expect six points on a licence, as well as a court appearance and a driving ban, the RAC said.
