Immigration detains 171 foreigners in Masjid India blitz

KUALA LUMPUR: There was tension in the air amid provocations when 171 foreigners were detained for various offences during an Immigration Department operation at Jalan Masjid India here today.
Immigration Department enforcement division director Basri Othman said 14 business premises were inspected in the operation, which involved 160 officers and began at 10am.
"The inspections were carried out to ensure that employers comply with regulations by hiring foreign workers with valid work passes.
"This is also part of our ongoing efforts to educate the public to only employ foreign workers who have been approved or possess a valid work permit," he said in a press conference after the operation.
Basri said 758 individuals were checked, comprising foreign workers, expatriates and Malaysians. Of that number, 171 foreigners were found to have violated immigration laws.
"Some attempted to escape, while others provoked our enforcement personnel in an effort to obstruct inspections.
"The heavy rain further complicated our task, especially when pursuing those who tried to flee through the back of the premises," he said.
He added that among the common tactics used by undocumented migrants was disguising themselves as customers in the area to avoid detection.
"Based on initial checks, several individuals were found without valid work passes, travel documents, or had overstayed.
"The majority of those detained were from India and Bangladesh, with a smaller number from Indonesia," he said.
The foreigners will be sent to the Immigration Detention Depot in Beranang, Selangor.
Basri reminded foreigners in the country without valid permits to take advantage of the government's voluntary return programme to leave Malaysia before action is taken against them.
"At the same time, we warn employers not to hire undocumented workers. Employers who are found guilty of hiring them will face prosecution in court," he said. — NSTP/HAIRUL ANUAR RAHIM

35 foreign GROs detained in Butterworth immigration raid

BUTTERWORTH: The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) detained 35 foreign guest relations officers (GROs) during a raid on an entertainment outlet early today. The women, aged between 23 and 45, were found hiding in a concealed room at the premises. JIM Enforcement Division director Basri Osman said the group included 19 Vietnamese, 14 Thais, one Chinese, and one Laotian national. Two male Chinese nationals were also detained during the operation. A total of 73 local men, suspected to be customers, were inspected by authorities. Basri revealed that the outlet had 10 rooms, each with hidden spaces behind sofas and speakers. A secret room was also discovered inside the toilet area. All entry points, including the lift, had been disabled to obstruct the raid. Officers were forced to break down the door to gain access to the seventh-floor premises. The outlet had reportedly been operating for over a year under tight surveillance. CCTV cameras and suspected informants may have alerted the operator about the raid. Investigations showed the GROs were paid between RM250 and RM300 per hour. A large sum of cash, believed to be payments, was seized at the location. The case is being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/1963. All detainees were taken to the Seberang Jaya Immigration Office for further questioning. They will later be transferred to the Jawi Immigration Detention Depot. The operation involved 45 personnel from JIM headquarters and state offices. It began at 12.30 am and concluded at 2.30 am. - Bernama

Entertainment centre offering GROs at RM300 hourly raided, 37 foreigners arrested

BUTTERWORTH: Operating on the seventh floor of a building in Jalan Bagan Luar, an entertainment centre allegedly offered what was advertised as an "exclusive package" where customers paid up to RM300 per hour to select guest relation officers (GROs) based on their body numbers. The centre's operations were uncovered during a raid by the Immigration Department early this morning, which led to the arrest of 37 foreigners, 35 of whom were suspected of working as GROs. Immigration Department Enforcement Division director Basri Othman said the 1am raid encountered obstacles when the premises' management detected the presence of the operation team and locked all entry points, including lifts and stairwell doors. He said the raiding party had to break through several metal doors to gain access. "After gaining entry, we inspected 110 people and detained 37 foreigners, aged between 23 and 45, including 35, believed to be working as GROs. "They included 19 Vietnamese women, 14 Thai women, two Chinese men and one woman each from China and Laos," he told reporters at the raid site. Basri said that during the inspection of karaoke rooms, several women were found hiding in secret compartments, such as behind sofas, inside speaker boxes and in toilets. "Our checks found that all the detained women were wearing body numbers, and it is believed that customers would select them based on these numbers. "They were paid between RM250 and RM300 per hour, and the money was placed in envelopes marked with the corresponding body numbers, believed to be payment for their services," he added. The entertainment centre is believed to have been operating for about a year and was popular among both local and foreign customers. Basri said most of those detained were found to have violated Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, while several others had overstayed their visas. All detainees were taken to the Seberang Jaya Immigration Office for further investigation before being placed at the Jawi Immigration Depot.
