All-Star Tatis leads the Padres to a 4-1 win against the Rangers

SAN DIEGO (AP) — All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr. scored the tying run in the third inning and doubled in the go-ahead run in the fourth for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Texas Rangers 4-1 on Sunday night to take two of three.
Tatis, named to the National League All-Star team for the third time, reached base four times.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the fourth, Tatis doubled into the left field corner to bring in Trenton Brooks for a 2-1 lead. Martín Maldonado came around from first, slid headfirst and originally was called safe on Marcus Semien's relay throw to catcher Jonah Heim, but the Rangers challenged and the call was overturned.
The Padres failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation with two outs in the bottom of the first against Jack Leiter (4-6). But they tied it two innings later when Tatis reached on a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Luis Arraez's two-out single to center.
Maldonado and Jake Cronenworth singled in runs in the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Padres rookie opener David Morgan had a rough first inning but allowed the only run thanks to a play at the plate and a great diving catch by Cronenworth with the bases loaded.
Leiter allowed two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts and two walks.
Kyle Hart (3-2) got the win and Robert Suarez pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save to tie for the big league lead.
Key moment
Tatis' RBI double came one pitch after he was brushed back and lost hold of his bat.

Spain's 6-2 win over Belgium puts it on brink of Euro 2025 quarterfinals

THUN, Switzerland (AP) — World Cup champion Spain closed in on the quarterfinals of the Women's European Championship with another statement victory, 6-2 over Belgium on Monday. It was, surprisingly, the first time Spain won back-to-back matches at the Euros, after beating Portugal 5-0 in its opener. With 11 goals in two matches, Spain and its star-packed squad is living up to its billing as the tournament favorite. Spain will secure a place in the quarterfinals if Italy avoids defeat against Portugal later — a result that would also eliminate Belgium. Spain laid siege to the Belgium goal from the start. Mariona Caldentey played in a lovely pass from the edge of the area to Vicky López, who cushioned it on for Alexia Putellas to sweep into the far corner. However, Spain's 22nd-minute lead lasted barely two minutes before Justine Vanhaevermaet headed in Tessa Wullaert's corner at the near post. Spain captain Irene Paredes was playing her first match of the tournament after being suspended from the opener, and she made it 2-1 before the break when she headed in a corner. Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí was brought on at halftime. She was hospitalized for viral meningitis before the tournament and played only eight minutes against Portugal. Belgium leveled again through Hannah Eurlings shortly after the restart. It was initially ruled out for offside but awarded by the VAR. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Less than a minute later, Spain led for a third time when Putellas played in Esther González for the veteran forward to score her third goal of the tournament. When a González effort was blocked, the ball was not cleared and Mariona Caldentey fired in Spain's fourth. Claudia Pina curled a sumptuous 20-yard effort into the top right corner and there was still time for Putellas — another two-time Ballon d'Or winner — to net her second of the match. ___ AP soccer:

NASCAR's first in-season tournament adds some drama to the Cup Series finish in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — NASCAR's first in-season tournament hasn't made much of an impression on its drivers so far. Ty Gibbs said Sunday he didn't know who his second-round opponent was until after the Cup Series race. That might be about to change. Gibbs is one of eight drivers still in the mix for the $1 million prize that goes to the winner of the five-race, bracket-style competition. While Shane van Gisbergen was closing out his Cup victory in Chicago this weekend, some of the most compelling action on the downtown street course was at least connected to the inaugural In-Season Challenge. Alex Bowman and Bubba Wallace raced each other hard in the final laps after they tangled in Chicago last year. Bowman got the better of the head-to-head matchup, finishing eighth and eliminating Wallace from the tournament. John Hunter Nemechek was 15th, one spot better than his opponent, Chase Elliott. Gibbs had a strong day and finished second, good enough to beat AJ Allmendinger in sixth. Ty Dillon, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Preece, Zane Smith and Erik Jones also moved on. The 14th-seeded Smith upset No. 3 seed Chris Buescher by finishing 14th. He is matched up with Gibbs for Sunday's road race at Sonoma. 'I hate we had to knock another Ford out, but it's super cool to advance,' Smith said. With the in-season tournament — part of a new media rights deal that includes TNT — NASCAR is following in the footsteps of the NBA and soccer leagues around the world. After Sonoma this weekend, it concludes with races at Dover and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bowman said the tournament wasn't on his mind as he battled with Wallace at the end in Chicago. Whatever the reason for the contact, their head-to-head matchup certainly added a bit of intrigue to the racing behind van Gisbergen's victory. With the money involved and the field trimmed to eight drivers, there could be more moments like the duel between Bowman and Wallace in the final weeks of the challenge. 'I wasn't expecting that to happen or to get raced like that, but we did,' Bowman said. 'We just have to move on from it and keep digging.' It sure sounds as if Dillon is enjoying the competition. Dillon, the No. 32 seed, eliminated Brad Keselowski on Sunday after he upset top-seeded Denny Hamlin at Atlanta on June 28. There was absolutely no drama in Dillon's win after Keselowski was collected in an early crash that began with Carson Hocevar hitting the wall and spinning out between Turns 10 and 11. Hocevar was eliminated by Reddick. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'I'm just so proud of Kaulig Racing and our No. 10 team,' Dillon said. 'I knew in a basketball city, going up against Brad in a game of knockout, I was going to have a good chance.' Dillon takes on Bowman and Preece faces Reddick in the next round. But the most interesting contest just might be Nemechek versus Jones in a matchup of Legacy Motor Club teammates. 'I felt like if we could have gotten through the first round, these next two rounds are really good for us,' Preece said. 'Our road course program is pretty strong, and we keep making it better. So going into Sonoma, I think we're up against Tyler Reddick, so he's really good at road courses as well, but I like being the underdog.' ___ AP auto racing:
