Japanese car firms at bottom of UK electric sales ranking

South Wales Argus11 hours ago
The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) think tank, which conducted the research, said the stakes 'could not be higher' for car companies which do not prioritise the transition to electric motoring.
Honda had the largest decrease for UK EV sales in the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, at 92%.
Mazda recorded the second biggest drop at 76%.
Nissan saw a 69% fall, but the ECIU noted the company is retooling its factory in Sunderland to build three new EV models, which will likely drive significant uptake.
At the other end of the scale, Ford saw the biggest year-on-year increase, with UK EV sales more than four times higher, partly because of the launch of the Ford Puma Gen-E.
The top five also included Renault and Volkswagen, which both saw UK sales of their EVs more than treble.
Colin Walker, head of transport at the ECIU, told the PA news agency: 'Traditional brands are fighting back, dramatically increasing the number of EVs they sell in what is now the world's fourth largest EV market.
'Legacy manufacturers are proving more than capable of making the transition to building the electric cars of the future with European manufacturers dominating.'
A report by consultancy CBI Economics found a failure by the automotive sector to make the transition to manufacturing EVs could see its contribution to the UK economy fall by as much as £34.1 billion, with the loss of more than 400,000 jobs.
Mr Walker said: 'The stakes for car companies the world over, and the car industry here in the UK, could not be higher.'
Ben Nelmes, chief executive of green consultancy New Automotive, which provided the statistics for the ECIU's analysis, said: 'The race to go electric is on and our new data separates the sprinters from the stragglers.
'It is fantastic to see legacy brands like Ford, Renault and the UK's own Mini delivering for drivers with a colossal surge in EV sales.
'The message to the laggards is simple: get on and build the brilliant EVs of the future, or prepare to be left behind.'
The Government has pledged to ban the sale of new fully petrol or diesel cars and vans from 2030.
Sales of hybrid cars will still be permitted until 2035.
Under the Government's zero emission vehicle (Zev) mandate, at least 28% of new cars sold by each manufacturer in the UK this year must be zero emission, which generally means pure electric.
Across all manufacturers, the figure during the first half of the year was 21.6%.
Recent changes to the mandate mean it will be easier for manufacturers who do not meet the targets to avoid fines.
A spokesperson for Mazda said the brand's drop in EV sales was caused by the discontinuation of the Mazda MX-30 BEV (battery electric vehicle), but the fully electric Mazda6e will be introduced in 2026.
He added: 'We will continue to meet the needs of our customers while developing a robust plan for the introduction of multiple EV models beyond 2026 that will give our customers an easy transition into electrified driving.'
Honda and Nissan were approached for a comment.
– Here are the top five car brands based on their increase in UK EV sales in the first half of the year:
1. Ford: 324%
2. BYD: 261%
3. Renault: 251%
4. Porsche: 203%
5. Volkswagen: 201%
– Here are the bottom five:
1. Honda: -92%
2. Mazda: -76%
3. Nissan: -69%
4. Toyota: -41%
5. MG: -35%

Why Chelsea's latest Xavi Simons transfer is set to fail as Blues try to bring in £60m RB Leipzig star

Chelsea are looking to swap a star player for Xavi Simons OUT OF THE BLUE OUT OF THE BLUE Why Chelsea's latest Xavi Simons transfer is set to fail as Blues try to bring in £60m RB Leipzig star Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CHELSEA'S bid to include Christopher Nkunku in negotiations to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig is set to fail. Former Leipzig star Nkunku, 27, is the latest Blues player to be offered as bait as talks continue over Dutch playmaker Simons. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 Chelsea are willing to swap Christopher Nkunku for RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons Credit:4 Chelsea ace Nkunku is not keen on returning to his old club But the France international forward is understood not to be keen on returning to his old club. And Leipzig would not be able to match Nkunku's current wages at Stamford Bridge, which reports in Germany claim could be as high as £17million per year. The Frenchman's actual salary is believed to be considerably lower yet still beyond Leipzig's budget. Sporting director Marcel Schafer is under pressure to slash wage costs by 20 per cent as the Bundlesliga club adjust to the financial reality of not playing in European competition this season. And Leipzig are for now standing firm on their £60m valuation of Simons. Agent Ali Barat, who represents Chelsea stars Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson, is working for Simons in his bid to land a move to the Premier League. Carney Chukwuemeka, Renato Veiga and Tyrique George have all been linked with moves to Leipzig as part of the Simons negotiations. Swap deals are now rare in football because of financial regulations and the way transfer payments are calculated for accounting purposes. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS But in any case Leipzig have so far said 'nein, danke' to all proposals they should buy one or more Blues players to help Chelsea fund a separate deal for Simons. Nkunku is among the big names Chelsea still want to move on before the transfer window closes. Fans spot Liam Delap's reaction on bench after Joao Pedro goal as Chelsea fans say 'this guy can't catch a break' He arrived from Leipzig in the summer of 2023 in a £52m deal after helping the club win the German Cup in what turned out to be his final season there. But Nkunku picked up a serious knee injury in pre-season that delayed his debut until December. And he has never established himself as a first-team regular at Stamford Bridge amid a huge turnover of players. Chelsea have signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap as centre-forwards this summer for a combined £90m. Nkunku did travel with the squad to the Club World Cup and made six appearances, scoring once in the Blues' successful campaign. But he is even further down the pecking order now following the arrivals of Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian, who represented former clubs Borussia Dortmund and Palmeiras respectively in the competition in the USA. And Chelsea still want to add Simons and Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho to Enzo Maresca's attacking options. Nkunku needs a fresh start and Chelsea want to sell him. But unless something significant changes, he will not be returning to Leipzig to grease the wheels of a deal for Simons. 4

Crystal Palace LOSE appeal over Europa League ban after furious UEFA reaction

Crystal Palace will NOT play in the Europa League this season after losing their appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. A panel of three heard the FA Cup winners' case, as they looked to fight their demotion to the Conference League. Nottingham Forest had been promoted to the Europa League as a result of UEFA's original decision, with Palace dropping down to the third-tier European club competition. The decision has been upheld after a verdict was delivered on Monday. Despite winning the cup, Palace fell foul of UEFA's rules relating to multi-club ownership due to part-owner John Textor's role at Lyon. Textor has since sold his stake in the Premier League club, but Palace had missed a deadline to fall in line with UEFA regulations. With the clubs missing the deadline to prove individuals didn't hold control or influence over more than one side, league position took precedence. This meant Lyon - who finished higher in Ligue 1 than Palace did in the Premier League - kept their Europa League place and Palace were forced to appeal to the CAS. The case which formed Palace's appeal featured a number of elements. Part of their argument concerned the fact that the March 1 deadline to fall in line was not necessarily set in stone, while they also didn't get a memo received by clubs who are members of independent body the European Club Association. 'We believe, for a number of reasons, it isn't the right decision and we have put that case forward strongly. We think we have a very solid case," Palace chairman Steve Parish told beIN Sports ahead of the Community Shield on Sunday. In the lead-up to Sunday's game at Wembley, Eagles manager Oliver Glasner also appeared cautiously optimistic. The Austrian also said he didn't believe his squad had been distracted by the uncertainty. "I can't see anything why we should be demoted or why we should stay in the Conference League. If you get punished when you feel innocent, that's tough," Glasner said at his pre-match press conference. He added: "The first meeting we had when we met, we just mentioned it once. Our slogan is to focus on things we can influence and when we get the final verdict on August 11, we will accept it. The players have done very well, the whole pre-season they've trained and worked very hard." Is this a fair outcome? Have your say in the comments section. Palace came out on top at Wembley on Sunday, beating Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Justin Devenny scored the winning spot-kick, with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr scoring Palace's goals in regulation time. "We call it the emotional reward: standing in front of the fans, having this feeling – you can't buy it with any money in the world," Glasner said after the win. 'The players deserved it today and our fans deserved it in the same way, because they're always supporting us from the beginning to the end, even when we were down. "They were always pushing the team forward and it's a great connection. In the end we all were rewarded – and this is what then stays forever." Warning to more than 5 MILLION drivers in UK over new compulsory test that could see you banned from roads

Elderly drivers could be banned from the road under the new rule GEARING UP Warning to more than 5 MILLION drivers in UK over new compulsory test that could see you banned from roads Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WARNING has been issued to more than five million British drivers who could be banned from the roads under a new rule. Ministers are considering introducing new rules for older drivers in England and Wales. The proposals, set to be published as part of a road safety strategy in the autumn, also include tougher penalties for uninsured driving and failing to wear a seatbelt. It was reported that the drink drive limit was also set to be changed as part of the new road safety plans. The change would mark the biggest shake-up of driving rules for nearly two decades. Drivers over 70-years-old are already subject to different rules on the road. When someone turns 70 they must begin renewing their licence every three years and they automatically lose their C1 or D1 entitlements. C1 allows users to drive medium-sized vehicles with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of between 3,500kg and 7,500kg and D1 entails users can drive minubuses with no more than 16 passenger seats. The new rules would slap older drivers with further regulations and come amid concern over the number of road traffic accidents on Britain's roads. Last year, 1,633 people were killed and almost 28,000 seriously injured in traffic incidents. Numbers have remained relatively constant following a large fall between 2000 and 2010. Shocking moment elderly driver takes his car hurtling down Rome's iconic Spanish Steps - before saying 'I got mixed up' Meanwhile, the number of people killed in drink-driving incidents has risen over the past decade, reaching a 13-year high in 2022. This prompted concern that existing road safety measures are no longer working. Under the plans being considered by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, the drink-drive limit in England and Wales could be cut from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath to 22 micrograms. This figure would be in line with Scotland – which cut its drink-drive limit in 2014 – and the rest of Europe. 4 Over 70s are already required to renew their licence every three years Credit: Getty 4 Millions of motorists could be banned under the new regulations Credit: Getty The UK is one of only three European countries to rely on self-reporting of eyesight problems that affect driving. Ministers are therefore considering compulsory eye tests every three years for drivers aged over 70 when they renew their licence. Any who fail the eye test would be slapped with a driving ban under the new legislation. A potential medical test for conditions such as dementia is also reportedly being looked at alongside eye tests. Other proposals are reported to include allowing the police to bring prosecutions for drug-driving on the basis of roadside saliva tests rather than blood tests as increasing numbers of drivers are caught with drugs in their system. The strategy is due to be published in the autumn, and all proposals will be subject to consultation Edmund King, AA president, said: 'The time has come for a bold and proactive approach to road safety. 'This strategy is much overdue as road deaths have plateaued over the last decade. 'We believe these new measures will not only modernise our approach to saving lives but also provide renewed momentum in making our roads safer for everyone.' Vision checks for older drivers and targeting drink and drug drivers are 'practical steps that can make a real difference', he said. Failing to introduce limits on new drivers transporting peer-age passengers for six months is 'a major oversight', he added.
