‘Spent a week unconscious in ICU, declared brain-dead': Teen loses life trying viral TikTok ‘dusting' challenge; know what it is

Indian Express08-06-2025
Renna O'Rourke, 19, believed she was destined for stardom. 'She always said, 'I'm going to be famous, dad. Just you watch. I'm going to be famous',' her father Aaron O'Rourke told 12 News.
Her pursuit of viral fame, however, ended in tragedy after she became the latest victim of TikTok's dangerous 'dusting' trend, a challenge that involves inhaling aerosol chemicals from household products to get high. The practice, also known as 'huffing' or 'chroming,' has long been condemned by health experts and authorities for its deadly consequences.
According to reports, the Tempe, Arizona resident had ordered an aerosol keyboard cleaner to her parents' home, where she lived. Without her mother's knowledge, she and her boyfriend attempted the dangerous challenge, and shortly after, Renna went into cardiac arrest. 'She spent a week unconscious in the intensive care unit and then was declared brain-dead,' Aaron told 12 News.
The 'dusting' trend is not new. According to CNN, nearly 564,000 American teenagers aged 12-17 reported using inhalants in 2022, an alarming statistic that, while down from 684,000 in 2015, still underscores the ongoing risk posed by viral substance abuse trends on social media.
Health experts have long warned about the dangers of inhaling household cleaners. Dr Vivek Anand Padegal, director – pulmonology at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, said, 'Inhaling household cleaners can be fatal due to the toxic chemicals they contain, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other hazardous substances. When inhaled, these chemicals can cause severe damage to the lungs, airways, and brain.'
Dr Padegal also said, 'As soon as these substances are breathed in, they can trigger inflammation, irritation, and damage to the delicate tissues in the lungs, leading to respiratory distress, coughing, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can cause chemical pneumonitis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and even death.'
Even in cases where exposure isn't fatal, the long-term effects can be devastating.
'Non-fatal exposure can cause chronic respiratory issues, such as reactive airway disease (similar to asthma), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and other long-term lung problems, as well as neurological damage,' Dr Padegal said.
As the O'Rourkes mourn the devastating loss of their daughter, they are speaking out to warn other parents, teens, and educators about the viral but deadly influence of trends like dusting. Their message is clear: no online fame is worth risking a life.

Gorakhpur has access to best of healthcare, med expense coverage: Yogi

1 2 Gorakhpur: High-end super specialty healthcare is accessible in Gorakhpur and Ayushman Bharat and Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana are ensuring coverage of medical expenses up to Rs 5 lakh. This was stated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who inaugurated a state-of-the-art private hospital on Medical College road in the city, on Sunday. He assured citizens that if additional assistance was needed, the CM Relief Fund and contributions from legislators' funds would be extended. "Last year, Rs 1,100 crore was provided under the CM Relief Fund for medical treatment," said Yogi. He also launched the hospital's patient-care mobile app 'Regency MyCare' and inspected the newly inaugurated facilities. Yogi pointed out that just a decade ago, eastern UP's healthcare system was in a "dismal" state, BRD Medical College being the lone major hospital, struggling to provide treatment to the needy. "Today, BRD has been upgraded, AIIMS Gorakhpur is functional, and several new medical colleges have come up in districts like Basti, Deoria, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Jaunpur, and others. Soon, Ballia will also have its own medical college," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 1 Reason to Read The 5 Books American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends For Turning Your Life... Stressing "healthy competition" in healthcare sector, Yogi cited the model of Guru Gorakhnath Hospital, which had pioneered ICU and dialysis services in the region over two decades ago. He said new institutions must strive to deliver upgraded models of care. MP Ravi Kishan said that during SP govt in state, people were left struggling with encephalitis and BRD medical college was in a bad state but now there was AIIMS and several other hospitals in the district and around 7-8 crore population of nearby districts, Bihar and Nepal depended on Gorakhpur for healthcare. The hospital group's chairman and MD Dr Atul Kapoor said the facility would also create employment for about 900 locals. PACS secys on sick leave make Thailand trip, suspended

Bhubaneswar: It seems the secretaries of six primary agriculture cooperative societies (PACS) in Boudh and Sonepur districts took the phrase 'sick of work' a bit too literally! Who knew that the best cure for a mysterious illness was a dose of vitamin sea in Thailand? The lure of sun, sea and sand was so strong that it allegedly pulled them out of the sick bed and into the beach getaway. While their official records showed them battling imaginary ailments, their social media photographs showed them busy battling the waves in Phuket and Pattaya. The govt, however, wasn't too thrilled about their impromptu beach therapy session. They swung into action, suspending three of the secretaries and serving show-cause notices to the others. "Upon inquiry, we found that Manjay Dharua, Dhaneswar Sahoo and Arun Pujhari, secretaries of PACS at Lachhipur, Mayurudan and Rengali in Sonepur district, were absent from Aug 8-11. It was found that they were vacationing in Thailand after having taken sick leave. They were suspended on Aug 12," Nruparaj Sahu, district collector of Sonepur, said on Sunday. Govt sources said these six PACS secretaries, along with a senior official from the registrar of cooperative society in Boudh district, had gone on a trip to Thailand from Aug 8-11 which was sponsored by a private fertiliser manufacturing company. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "The PACS secretaries were expected to be present during the crucial farming period. Their responsibilities include overseeing farmer registration and managing the distribution of fertilisers, which are vital to the agricultural community during this period of time," explained an official of the state cooperation department. PACS play a vital role in paddy procurement and the supply of seeds, fertilisers and agricultural equipment to farmers. Their absence during this period left many farmers without access to essential resources. Girish Chandra Purohit, Boudh district registrar of cooperative societies (DRCS), confirmed that three PACS secretaries from the district had joined their suspended colleagues from Sonepur on the Thailand trip, and have been issued show-cause notices. "I, too, had accompanied the six PACS secretaries to Thailand from Aug 8-11. Three secretaries from our district have received show-cause notices. I am also under departmental inquiry, although I had obtained prior permission for the trip," Purohit told TOI. Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, secretary of the state cooperation department, said the investigation is ongoing. "We are taking action against those found guilty of dereliction of duty," Patil said. Doctors, colleagues pay tribute to Namperumalsamy

1 2 Madurai: A memorial service was held in Madurai on Sunday to honour and celebrate the life and legacy of Aravind Eye Hospital co-founder Dr P Namperumalsamy, who passed away at the age of 85 on July 24. Family members, Aravind Eye Hospital staff members and the medical fraternity from across the country paid their tributes to the ophthalmologist. Namperumalsamy was best known for his contributions as a retina specialist. "The start of the retina specialty in India was only because of visionary work of Dr Namperumalsamy. The field has now grown in leaps and bounds. He instilled high values and was a great teacher. Though I was not directly trained by him, his humility is worth emulating. His teachings will always remain with us and guide us forever," said Dr Lingam Gopal, director of retina services, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. "Dr Namperumalsamy led by example. He left a legacy on how mentors should support their students. He understood the importance of research on retina. His life and legacy should be celebrated by creating awareness and a system to take up diabetic retinopathy cases that has become a huge burden in India," said Dr Taraprasad Das, vice-chairman emeritus, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Namperumalsamy is survived by his wife Dr G Natchiar, director-emeritus of Aravind Eye Hospital, and two sons Venkatesh Prajna and Vishnu Prasad.
